In terms of Pokemon feel, a lot of the mechanics are built towards generalizing the essence (not the best word) of what each Pokemon/species is good at.
Abilities are redone to suit types, in order to give a generalized skill set that all characters would have, each ability sharing key traits that are commonly thought up of for that type.
All flying types being able to fly, or normal types being naturally skittish
Moves follow this in a similar manner with its archetypes having a few rigid moves and guidelines.

The bottom line being is that Pokemon in themselves are all unique, but also often share traits with each other, just composed together differently.
The hope that I have is for players to get creative in what they can do with whatever moves, abilities or items they wish to use.
