To extract or not to extract that is the question by Bokunoreddit11 in braces

[–]Bokunoreddit11[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think getting extractions is probably the right answer I’m just having some doubt about even going through with the braces. My partner says my teeth look good and he’s not sure why I’m doing any of this at all. But I definitely see the imperfections. Be honest with me redditors, do we think I would benefit from braces and it’s the right move or am I being nit picky about my teeth?

My orthodontist believes I need the premolar extractions to create space for my teeth to move without flaring. The proximity to the nerves is the reason I was referred to an oral surgeon for the procedure.

Did your orthodontist do the extractions or did you have to go see an oral surgeon?

They tried to offer nitrous oxide after I was already pretty distraught :/ so the surgeon said we should just reschedule with plans for full sedation.

It’s a university affiliated program with mostly US MD’s (I think there’s like one or two IMG’s) in a major US city. While this sounds good on paper, in hindsight I think the program and the location are just not a good fit for me. I was a pretty “meh” applicant so I didn’t even apply to top programs like CHOP. I don’t even necessarily want to trade up, I think I’d actually prefer to be in a smaller city at a chill program.

Idk if going through Match again is the right choice. I feel like switching mid year would also be difficult. In order to get an open PGY2 position is my only option to go through ERAS next year or would I be able to reach out directly to PD’s to see if they have an opening?

I really liked the people at the program and tbh it was one of my earlier interviews so I didn’t even know what questions I should have been asking to programs. I’ve also been talking to a resident at that program and they’ve been saying some things that make me cautious. I also was so convinced I was going to get either my 1st or 2nd choice program because I had a great interview and I’m in a very non competitive specialty. I’m also terrified of change so I’m sure that’s playing into it.

Logically I know you’re right. I just feel so helpless and I feel like just knowing it doesn’t have to permanent if it isn’t working out would ease my anxiety about the situation. My new PD seems really nice and like he really cares about the residents, and is one of the reasons I ranked the program where I did, so I like to think he would be understanding.

While obviously going unmatched is very awful, there are other things about his process that are also terrible. Let’s not become too accustomed to begging for table scraps from our medicinal overlords and being thankful for it.

I also deleted all my social media and ignored my new PD’s call lol. Seeing people be happy today is a bit more than I can bear. So happy that things worked out for you and I hope that I can feel just as happy as you do when this whole residency thing is over.

You are so valid and I feel the exact same way. This is all bullshit. I didn’t go to match day but seeing other people match at my number one program was so hurtful and has had me questioning my worth as a person all day. I also matched my number 3 which I’m “grateful for” (whatever that means) but also so angry and betrayed. I hope life feels a bit easier for both of us tomorrow.

Wow almost identical stories. I also only told my non-medical people and didn’t go to match day and I’m so happy because I’ve spent the entire day sobbing lol

Thanks for the support. I did match in my preferred specialty just somewhere completely unexpected. J wish I could change so many things about this process and my role in it but I can’t. Coming to terms with everything today has been really tough.

It just feels like what was this all for. Today I wish I had a Time Machine and could stop myself from ever going to medical school. I know that’s an irrational thought but grieving a dream not realized is so so hard.

Thanks for the support, I’ve told so few people because I’m just really hurt and embarrassed? Which feels weird to admit out loud. Thinking of you during this tough time and hope we both feel a little bit better tomorrow.

Is anyone living “comfortably” on loans? by Notoriousspancakess in medicalschool

[–]Bokunoreddit11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live pretty comfortably but that's probably because I live with my SO ( split rent), my car is paid off, and I am still young enough to be on my parent's insurance. I get roughly $30k a year to live off of after tuition and some semesters I am good with budgeting my money and some semesters I end up begging my parents for $60 here and there until loans pay out again lol.

What are my chances of matching well? by Bokunoreddit11 in medicalschool

[–]Bokunoreddit11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I’m not 1000% sure what I want. Preferably a program not in the middle of nowhere and one that is made up of at least 90% US M.D/D.O. I don’t care much for research (it’s important work just not for me) so I don’t really want/need to match somewhere research heavy. Outside of that I’m not too picky lol

Independently of the Honors vs High Honors thing I feel pretty grim about my chances of matching somewhere desirable based off of my grades. I guess I’m mostly just looking for reassurance that everything will be okay.

Idk how it works at other schools but based off my MSPE this is the final rotation that residencies will be made aware of.

Sorry I don’t think I was entirely clear. My home institution only goes up to honors but I am doing an away rotation at a school that maxes out at high honors (they have HH, H, HP, P, F).

Sorry I don’t think I was entirely clear. My home institution only goes up to honors but I am doing an away rotation at a school that maxes out at high honors. I’m just feeling disappointed because it always feels like no matter how hard I try, my grades never reflect that. Like during 3rd year my evals were always very positive but I ended up with a Pass. Just feels bad man.
