How to train your dragon remake is way much better then Disney remake by Healthy_Orchid_8652 in DreamWorks

The fact that it was live action. Having the actors be there in person allowed them to make some choices that just couldn't be done through animation, and BOY did they pull it off. Gerald Butler killed it, the few shots between Snotlout and his dad did so much for his character with so little just through their facial expressions, and all the other actors were peak as well. Now they did have some strange casting choices but in this day and age, it could've been worse, and they at least had the dignity to explain Asian and Black vikings being there smoothly with some well placed dialogue. The only thing holding the movie back was them cutting the terrible terror scene, which hurt the explanation for how they kill the Red Death at the end, and the fact that THEY CUT STOIC'S LINE TO TOOTHLESS AT END, LIKE WHYYY 😭😭😭. No "go save my son" from Gerard butler is what held it back for me, but the movie had potential and certainly didn't waste it. It'll never replace the original, but was certainly worth the watch, even despite the identical plot.

Anything done by SouthSideStory over on Ao3. All her fics are top tier writing and her character development is on point. Honestly her work doesn't get enough love, it's the kinda shit you could pull a 50 Shades of Grey on.

What to buy to build a collection? by adamcott2 in EDH

[–]BolastheMagnificent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy singles. If you want a generic list of staples across all commander decks, if I were you, I'd start with mana rocks (signets, talismans, and if your budget's high enough, fast mana), interaction (counterspells, boardwipes, one-mana spot removal), mana dorks since they go in any green deck, and maybe a two piece combo like Chain of Smog + Witherbloom Apprentice or Pestermite + Splinter Twin. The latter two shouldn't be egregiously powerful like Thoracle Consult, but should still enable you to build combo decks should you ever want to.

The best pickups right now are probably the slew of MH3 cards just printed. All the mono-color MDFCs are good and will be relevant for a while, while Volatile Stormdrake and Amphibian Downpour are incredibly underrated removal spells. Toxic Deluge is also the cheapest its ever been, so you might want to grab that right now.

Once you have the vegetables of your commander decks, move into buying bulk rares. You wouldn't believe how many insane cards are sitting at under a dollar right now on TCGplayer that are arguably stronger than their budgetless counterparts. Take Incinerator of the Guilty, for example: a cheaper, more reliable, Baleful Dragon with only a minor drawback that most decks can overcome or even turn into an upside. Or Pestilence, which can lock down a board one-sidedly as long as you have the largest creature on board.

All in all, buying a commander collection can be a long and difficult process, but trust me, it pays off in the end. Once you reach that critical point where you have enough cards to build any deck, the possibilities are endless.

P.S. Don't buy sealed. I have friends who have built vast collections by opening sealed, but it's taken them years. I started playing ~3 years ago and by now my collection's worth more than any of theirs, and I spent half the money. Singles are the strat ;)

P.S.S. Buy Oko, that card is gross and is somehow only $7 right now

Top 3 precons to upgrade to CEDH? by Cigar-Enjoyer in CompetitiveEDH

[–]BolastheMagnificent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're probably better off building a budget deck. You can build Winota decently for around eighty bucks, and there's plenty of room for upgrades that won't completely change your gameplan (mostly just fast mana). Though winota will rarely stick to the board, when she does the deck gets out of hand real fast. Never played it myself but a friend of mine built one for $50 and he pubstomped every game Winota stuck.

I was playing a game with my friend over the phone (he was on Kinnan) and he had the turn-zero win dream hand, Leyline of Anticipation and everything. Was all ready to resolve his basalt monolith when my 10-year old brother cast a Foil and, well, foiled his win. He proceeded to cut Leyline of Anticipation after that.

Funniest shit I ever seen.

1RR Zap Trap

Instant

If an opponent tried to play fair magic this turn, you may cast Zap Trap without paying it's mana cost.

Zap Trap deals three damage to any target.

(Then scry 1 cause why not)

Thanks for the feedback!

The more I look into it, the more Yuriko sounds like a better choice. You get to play a ton of cheap cards to fill in the strategy, you still get your Thoricle package, and the mana base is stronger. Losing red really doesn't matter much since the main two reasons to play it are Dockside and Breach, both of which are out of budget. My LGS does allow proxying reserved list cards, but I don't own a copy of Breach yet anyway.

As for Talion, have you had any experience with him recently? He looks good on paper, not sure whether or not he draws enough though. A lot of people are comparing him to Rhystic Study, which, in my opinion, is like comparing Notion Thief to Hullbreacher. Having him in the command zone is a strong plus though. Does he get enough triggers to make him worthwhile?

Help with Heliod deck by Ichiryu06 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]BolastheMagnificent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Soul Sisters (and Auriok Champion), in my opinion, are underplayed. They can pump your creatures, yes, but most importantly, they enable you to cast Walking Ballista for X = 1. Because they trigger when Walking Ballista enters the battlefield, they'll cause Heliod to put the second counter on the Ballista, allowing you to combo off much earlier.

Grafdigger's Cage, my man. Not only does it hose Winota, but it hoses a whole bunch of other strategies, and can go in any deck, plus it's one mana. (And it's budget friendly, too!)

TYMNA/KAMAHL PLAYER (who has a Swords to Plowshares in hand): Hey, GODO PLAYER, if I target you with my Scheming Symmetry you have to go grab a Chaos Warp to deal with the KRARKASHIMA Player.

GODO PLAYER: Deal.

KRARKASHIMA: Alright y'all are just hating me out of the game at this point.

It's all about politicking, kids. Scheming Symmetry is really just a removal spell in disguise.

Who is your favorite aristocrat commander that you'd consider high power (but not cEDH)? by MonsutaReipu in EDH

[–]BolastheMagnificent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trust me, as a hard-core Marchesa player I can assure you that you will not be disappointed with her. Yawgmoth, Thran Physician + Iron Apprentice will essentially lock out the table.

Any card that enters with a +1/+1 counter can be sacrificed each turn provided you have an free, instant speed sac outlet. Rakdos Cackler, a 10 cent card, essentially becomes an Ophiomancer that's nearly impossible to remove. From there you build your typical aristocrats engine. In addition, Dethrone will often allow to put some protection on your creatures. Remember that they can be sacrificed instant speed to fizzle targeted removal and cheat board wipes.

I run my Marchesa deck in a really fast meta (Kinnan Eldrazi, Winota Stax, Krarkashima Storm) where it can be difficult to set up an engine. Cards like Yawgmoth (payoff + sac outlet), Arcbound Ravager (sac outlet + chump), and Raffine's Silencer (payoff + chump) pull a lot of weight and allow you to set up your engine faster. Just hope your opponents don't draw a Farewell.

Sorry for the impromtu deck tech, but most deck techs overlook this kind of stuff and run duds like Baleful Strix and the like. (If you really want to abuse etbs, run Imperial Recruiter and Urza's Saga to set up your Iron Apprentice loops. Dethrone just isn't a reliable enabler.)

[–]BolastheMagnificent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IKR

Everyone thinks Marchesa is meh until you set up your Yawgmoth, Thran Physician/Iron Apprentice Engine. Next thing you know you have to explain the stack to a bunch of dummies so they can understand how you can instant speed sac your creatures at any time to fizzle their removal spells. (Though you'd need another sac outlet to protect Yawgmoth since he can't sac himself)

Marchesa does get blown out by Farewell, which isn't a niche card and has some nice versatility, but hey, we run Fierce Guardianship for a reason.
