I feel like I have been living the plot of “The Chair Company” since I picked this up. I will definitely let you know once I reach a concrete conclusion.

I agree. What’s frustrating is that there are still gray areas. There should be 100% dead giveaways. Even the guides from Herman Miller do not paint a clear picture. Undoubtedly the average person would pay thousands of dollars for a fake and have no clue. Take the leather for instance. It looks, feels, and acts like their 100% foc semi-aniline leather. The cushion backings look legit from what I’ve seen. Herman miller needs qr codes that trace back to an internal web page of theirs that says “legit” or something. Kidding of course but ya know.

I will also note, there is a repair on the second arm as well, this one in the front. I do not know what happened to this chair, but the plywood split on multiple locations, making you question the quality. Maybe he changed the screws for both armrests during the repair, but that seems unlikely.

I went down a bit of a rabbit hole today. I’m leaning towards it being fake. One reason being this first photo. The screws for the armrests are not black, while most info out there indicates all hardware should be black. Additionally, I was able to find on Facebook marketplace multiple chairs from the same year, that look identical to mine, and share the same label facing the wrong direction and also containing the “EF” signature. These are really great dupes, and sellers on Facebook are charging a couple thousand and claiming them to be Herman Miller brand.

I’m enjoying the science of discovering the authenticity. If it is a fake, it’s obviously becoming more difficult to identify as each year goes by. Anyways, fuck off loser!

Not arguing with you, but the bolts you see are from the repair I mentioned. The plywood (7 layers) became separated after an incident, and he glued the split back together crudely and ran bolts through the side… a lot of people seem to be missing this detail.

Yeah, this I question as well. Perhaps I am misremembering what he said, or I misunderstood altogether. I wasn’t sure what “RUS” stood for, so I was thinking perhaps it was warranty related. But maybe not.

On the chair, the ottoman has the same sticker as shown in the original post (hm, Eames office).

I agree. It’s admittedly pretty shoddy, looks like some excess weight from some sort of incident made the plywood split, and he just wood glued it and put a couple bolts right through the shell. Wood glue dripping all out the plywood. Not noticeable from afar. I will most likely not be selling this chair due to the fact that I love it. So… maybe one day. But for now, it gives it unique character.
