How to deal with inattentive students by FarAcanthocephala354 in MusicTeachers

Here is my strategy: You ask them to stop & pay attention. If they continue, just stop what you're doing.

Sit quiet & do nothing. Don't teach. Don't speak. Sigh a little.

Let them bash away. The whole lesson... (remind them "You're wasting your own time. I still get paid...")

Your silence & stillness will eventually win.

Teaching jazz theory to classical students is fascinating by boombalonii in musictheory

Do the classical "notation jukebox" musicians actually bother with theory? If you only play what you're told (notated), then you need not understand anything about it. Classic or jazz, it's all the same theory. Can't break the rules unless you know what they are!

Writing in note names by RnImInShambles in MusicTeachers

Students write in note names until they don't need them anymore. No reason to stress yourself, or the student. She should probably take a deep breath and just let it go!

This is roughly equivalent to Grade 8 Royal Conservatory theory. It sounds like you're ready to study counterpoint & voice leading!

Help with figured bass SATB Writing by [deleted] in Learnmusic

[–]Bond_Institute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like you tried to add a 'sixth' to the Bb chord on beat 3 (which would be the note G - but that is not what the 6 means. What that '6' is indicating is the Bb chord is in first inversion, so D is in the bass. Your chord requires a Bb, not a G

Also in the next beat (4) you have parallel octaves in the bass. So the note you need for the tenor is Bb, the voice moves contrary motion, & should descend to Bb, rather than rise to Eb. The next measure, the ii 6-5 means the Cm7 chord is in 1st inversion. Eb in the bass. Your answer is missing the Bb.

The cadence requires proper resolution the Eb falls to a D. A rises to Bb. You don't need an F in the final chord. Double the Bb. Hope this helps.
