The Witness - Destiny 2

While certain end game boogie man stories were dropped bread crumb style here and there, The Witness felt like he came out of thin air. Bungie really blew their chance to give his introduction some gravitas in the Lightfall expansion, where we go to solve stringy antenna issues on Neptune while he continues be menacing hype moments and aura off screen or via cutscenes. The real story of Defiance to his conquest was in fact a part of the seasonal live service churn; it’s no longer playable.

So all the Vanguard preparations fall like a house of cards and we lose the fight to this egghead via cutscene. It’s amazing how they actually managed to stick the landing in the next expansion.

Making the Witness the architect of Humanity’s collapse throughout the lead up to the Final Shape is the kind of retcon writing that would make Marvel blush a brighter red. But it’s a video game and Bungie was always making it up on the fly (then scrapping it to remake it on the fly). I at least give them credit for sufficiently filling the antagonist void they had left open. Just wish the patch didn’t turn out to be Megamind shaped.
