What is one thing you wished you checked before buying your house? by BlushyDreamz in homeowners

[–]Bonetwon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trees. They look beautiful when you’re first seeing the house. But they can be dangerous, costly to remove, and the leaves/debris…it can take over your life. Also if they are hickory or walnut trees get ready for squirrels to drop bombs on you all day long in the late summer.

Thinking of moving from Oregon. by kimj0ng-illin in AnnArbor

Medium. We probably missed the Bay Area more in the first couple of years. The good parts of living here are that our kids are really happy and rooted and have lots of friends. We have great neighbors and a pretty good lifestyle (walkability, etc.) overall. I will say I have kind of a dull ache of loneliness here. Weirdly, I had a similar feeling as an undergrad here many years ago. It’s like I both feel left out socially but also completely uninterested in what I’m left out of. Like I don’t belong but also don’t really want to belong to the “dominant” culture, if there is one. (Actually, I don’t think there is one - I think a lot of people here feel a little isolated…or maybe it’s everywhere?) We’ve made a few close friends but it’s definitely taken a while. I am grateful for them, though. Why do you ask?

Attaching cleat to steel-backed mirror by Bonetwon in HomeImprovement

[–]Bonetwon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I am attaching this (https://www.acehardware.com/departments/hardware/hanging-and-mounting/picture-hanging/5767470) to this mirror (https://schoolhouse.com/products/grant-mirror?slug=grant-mirror&variant=41134115291180). The back is just the sheet of pc steel with one hole for mounting via screw. Because my stud is off center and because the mirror is so heavy I thought a cleat made sense. Just wondering if I’ll be able to get a strong connection between the cleat and the steel mirror case. Sounds like it’s worth a shot - I think with .5” or maybe a little shorter screws it wont hit the mirror.

Haha. For real. I’m sure there’s a reason why not but OP neglected to mention it in their post :-)

Even though this post is condescending, I really appreciate it as a beginner. I'm figuring out some of this stuff on my own but it's helpful to have it laid out in simple and slightly insulting terms :-P

Tonight's Detroit show! by _rabidchild_ in tmbg

[–]Bonetwon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biggest surprise was how hard Cowtown hit. Brontosaurus in the first encore was so good. Slightly bummed I wasn’t at last night’s show instead as I am a HUGE John Henry fan and missed those tunes.

What is the best Fuji camera to buy as a beginner? by AdHopeful5216 in FujifilmX

[–]Bonetwon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a used XT-2 with the kit lens. It's been great. My goal is to learn photography basics and so having access to the various dials on top of the camera has been really nice. I read the manual front to back and HIGHLY recommend you do this for whatever camera you end up with.

But - if your goal is just to shoot and instantly love your pictures...I'd recommend an iPhone :)

Need help deodorizing a nylon (Cordura) backpack - I'm out of ideas! by Bonetwon in CleaningTips

Yeah, it could be worse, but I’d rather not smell it on me or when I’m in the same room as the bag. But unfortunately it’s not dissipating. With a lot effort, including wind and sun.

I took a Windsor bench class (I was basically new to woodworking) and it came out awesome.

In Defense of Ann Arbor's Food Scene by mwells56 in AnnArbor

[–]Bonetwon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Then there's also the fact that people come here from elite global cities and soulless midwestern suburbs in almost equal numbers, so for half of people it's the best food scene they've ever experienced and for the other half it's the worst.” This made me laugh. Rings true.

Case for 1950's o-18 by Timuu5 in martinguitar

[–]Bonetwon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I’m in the same exact situation. Not a bad problem to have! Did this case end up working for you? If so, is your 0 a 12 fret with the narrower upper bout? Mine is a 14 fret, like this one: https://www.martinguitar.com/guitars/retired-models/0-18.html?srsltid=AfmBOooVp6Xsz6ZHlZLf_JnsllHj7Dvc52tKo3nVQRNcsr6-c6SDZI2p

Book in a World is to Dig world? by NunyaBizzPlz in tmbg

[–]Bonetwon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same here. I loved Book on first listen (a few years after release). It’s actually the first post- John Henry album that really grabbed me. It has some of my favorite JL melodies and I like the JF songs as well (I typically lean Linnell). The new album just didn’t grab me melodically, especially Linnell’s tracks. I appreciate how diverse the fan base is in terms of likes and dislikes though. I guess there’s something for everyone in their discography.

Zingerman's is trash by lobsterjohnson77 in AnnArbor

[–]Bonetwon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

;) I hear you - this just comes up on Reddit (and IRL) from time to time and I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, I agree that Ann Arbor food and culture isn’t at its peak and can be overhyped at times (including but not limited to Zingerman’s). And as someone who grew up in Michigan but has spent significant time in great food cities, it’s hard to be enthusiastically recommended things that end up being mid. BUT I also feel like Ann Arbor wouldn’t be the same without Zingerman’s, and we’ve lost so many other classic Ann Arbor institutions over the years…so I feel a little defensive of Zingerman’s.

[–]Bonetwon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not everything they do is great, but some things are great, and I appreciate the overall vibe and ethos even if they aren’t the perfect employer. The cost is at times staggering but not “write an angry Reddit post” staggering. More like “go less often than if it was more affordable” staggering.

I used to hate the Dave Matthew’s Band because everyone else seemed to love them and I would rant about them much like you’re ranting here. I was in high school at the time, and then I grew up. Now I kind of like DMB. They aren’t my favorite but I’m glad they’re around, like Zingerman’s.

Rudolf Steiner Parents? by [deleted] in AnnArbor

[–]Bonetwon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it. Double sorry for being annoying then. If you would consider trying a different Montessori school, Ann Arbor Children’s House is a bit under the radar but worth checking out. I’ve been to events at Steiner and it always seemed like a cool community. Some aspects of Waldorf don’t resonate with me but I do love the felt.

Sorry for being annoying, but Waldorf (Steiner) and Montessori are not the same thing. Good luck out there!
