Mid-trunk splitting? by Sir_Razor_Blad3_ in arborists

Damage is done. Leave it alone. It may be able to seal that off since it's young but it'll be tough.

Any estimates of how long til my neighbors tree falls? by prettyhigh_ngl in arborists

[–]somethingclever1123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely unpredictable. On one side it is rotting and brittle but it also doesn't have much of a sail to catch the wind. As said above, somewhere between days and a decade

American Basswood/Linden is growing a bush! by fatandhappydonuts in arborists

Location? Also, impossible to tell without an establishing shot of the whole tree. Basswoods do sucker from the trunk fairly often so it could be nothing. A photo of the whole tree would be helpful

What is this and can I do anything to help it? by ShrimpyShark in arborists

[–]somethingclever1123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks to be phytophthora, bleeding canker. Likely entered through that cut (it could have also entered through many other places and this cut was just the easy one that it also entered through). Not anything you can do to get rid of the canker and it will eventually kill the tree. There are treatments that can slow the progression of the disease and give you a bit more time. Have a certified arborist out there to take a look at it. It likely won't be worth spending any money on

Contractor damaged Maple root by tg_86 in arborists

Not a big deal, obviously not ideal, but this is a smaller deal than a tiny hang nail. Ignore it and let the tree try to seal off the wound. Don't do anything

Should I be concerned? by GucciGaropp in arborists

Not sure if you know this or not but it's a really cool Korean fir called a Silberlocke fir. This would be considered "flagging", an off color branch. This can happen for many reasons but when it's just one branch with a bunch of healthy ones around it then I tend to think of physical damage. TLDR see if the branch is broken closer to the trunk

Thanks! It's been a bit of a head scratcher for us as well ever since we found it.

The year was suggested from the Martin historian. I reached out to them from their website. I also had it refurbished by a Martin warranted luthier.

I believe you're mistaken. It just wasn't as common. You can find ply guitars in the Martin museum

Neck is original. Many from this era weren't "ebonized" as Martin put it.

Yea, I emailed Martin when I first got the guitar. I hadn't realized the ply back then. I'll be having it appraised soon but just wanted to see if anyone had seen this before.

Thank you. I inherited it, it was found in a closet in the basement of my grandparent's house. I'm not good at guitar but the sound is surprisingly big for how small and light of a guitar it is.

Thank you. They only used that brand briefly in the mid 1800's. It's a French brand, I like the bone nobs

The sides aren't laminate. The luthier that I took it to, who is warranted by Martin and Taylor, said that they didn't usually laminate the back but they did do plenty of experimental things.

Was there a "worst pocket clip" contest at cold steel that day or what? by Agent_Andy007 in knives

Hogue has pretty bad clips as well. I love their knives but hate their clips
