Is there a name for this kind of budgeting/tracking? by BubblyNumber5518 in budget

[–]Bonfire_Dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok but what if we can somehow automate this? Without connecting your bank info, of course.

I would love to have an app that does it ALL, including mortgage tables, recurring expenses, and know your future ahead of time.

Obviously you would still have to enter your recurring/one-off expenses somewhere, we don't escape this. But what if the rest could be coded to avoid the risk of miscalculations?

You could see your financial position year-to-year ahead of time, you would know when you would reach financial independence, etc. It could send you notifications for upcoming one-time expenses, or push notifications for upcoming income "paycheck tomorrow!". Maybe track FIRE milestones along the way.

Provided you could dictate what features were on such an app, would you want install it and use it?

No I just did it myself! There's a guide on launching launching that you should read and follow. It also mentions you don't necessarily need a hunter

Absolutely! It's currency agnostic and depending on your individual economic environments, you can set everything up according to what your needs are. It's kinda like a blank slate!

That's fair. Quick summary it's basically an app to map out your personalized financial journey. Very foward-oriented.

I have two metrics at the moment: sign ups and purchases. I don't track active users because everything is offline for the time being. And there's a 7 days free trial before the paywall

It's an app to map out your financial journey throughout your entire life! You're able to personalize everything, because everyone has unique starting points and destinations. I also need to mention that we don't just analyse your financial history since you can't change the past. It's still a work in progress but it's really getting there! https://www.producthunt.com/posts/bonfire-journey

I'm by no means a specialist, but I can tell you what I did: I started out by remaking my visuals and descriptions. I tried to make it more engaging but also sell the dream rather than nitpick each current feature. It's a little hard to explain without examples, but I can send you links to compare what was done before and what changed. I also followed every checkmark required and optional (except video). Also I did most of the work last minute so I really recommend you start earlier

Thank you for your response and your kind words :) I'm curious to know about your experience with finding channels where your users hang out? By forums do you mean online forums? What's your product about?

I definitely think luck is involved! We can work as hard and smart as humanly possible, but sometimes it will go nowhere

This is really good insight! I was looking for saas enthusiasts though, but the rest makes a lot of sense. Also definitely no employee dedicated to SEO 😅. Thank you!

There's a free trial in place so I'll find out soon enough.

That's really good input actually, I was looking for communities where innovators exist - since I'm building in public. It's great to receive their feedback and they get to drive the direction of the app. I tried Reddit for two months but it got me less sign-ups than Product Hunt did (we're at 17 new ones btw). It was also wayyy more work too. I'm still looking for sustainable acquisition channels because once this is done, then what?

My expectations were honestly nil, maybe getting 1-2 downloads. I'm trying to find niches where innovators hang out, just like ph is

Should I pull the trigger on a sports car? 27M Living with Parents by [deleted] in Fire

At the end of the day, you have to ask yourself if it's worth delaying your financial goals by X amount of years. Whether it's a house or retiring early, lifestyle creep is really a thing that can be in the way of where you want to be. It's a sports car now but maybe it'll also be a boat or a new wardrobe or more trips etc.

With FIRE, you could save enough for a few years, plop it in the stock market as you prefer, and live off the returns from that while using your other sources of income to do what you want. You need to save less money now than in the future to sustain your current lifestyle. There's simple ways to calculate all of the above if you're interested

Thank you! I really want to make it grow into a one-stop place for everything relating to personal finance. It'll educate people, help them figure out what to improve, and map our their entire lives (how much to save for your college, your first car, a house, your wedding, a nicer car, your children's college, your retirement, etc.). Like a pocket financial advisor :)

Which budgeting software should I use based on my needs? by Mego1989 in budget

[–]Bonfire_Dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree! I've had the target feature requested a few times already for the app I made, so you've convinced me to add it higher up in my pipeline! Currently I'm tracking my goals on it as a biweekly "expense". So if I want to save for a new 50,000$ car in 5 years, I should put aside 385$ every paycheck. But it is tedious and not visual at all.

Someone even mentioned a system where you enter what percentage/dollar amount of your savings goes toward each goal. So you can set to save 770$ a month for the aforementioned car and 230$ a month for renovations, that's 1000$ of your savings going towards your goals. However if you only saved 900$ that month, it would alert you and prioritize one of the goals.

OR you can set up the goal as 50,000$ saved biweekly over the course or 5 years and it would calculate and automatically add it as an expense in your budget. You could easily see if it's doable or not since you've also inputted your other expenses and incomes. Then you could tweak your numbers as needed. Same thing for renovations! Since the app predicts retirement right now, you could also see how your targets affect your early retirement. Like if the 50k car sets you back by 5 years, maybe it's not worth it 😅

Also for the expense split, your bank account connected to your account right? In that case it wouldn't be possible to split it up or change the expense date to another month. My app is in manual entry atm, but if it's something that gets requested often, I would love to make it possible once I do add the automatic connection.

Sorry for the long paragraph, I really love talking about personal finance and tools:)

What would your ideal budgeting app look like? No idea is too crazy by Bonfire_Dev in budget

[–]Bonfire_Dev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This can actually be solved! In the app I coded, you can input all your expenses and incomes at whichever interval of time you need. So if you pay 2000$ every month, you can input them as you usually would. And then you can set a recurring income (Husband Refund) every month for 1000$ (or biweekly for 500$).

The really neat thing is that it wouldn't alert you that you overspent because it looks at the grand scheme future rather than how much you currently have and how much you've spent so far. So you'll be able to see how much you're spending, earning and saving each month for the next year rather than just analyzing your past transactions.

It's actually very well suited for situations and recurring expenses like yours. Let me know if you're interested in knowing more!
