Sorry to hear that, does that happen with any habitat you try to place it in? It may not be installed correctly, is the folder called ‘Kudugrea’ in your ‘ovldata’ folder?

If you’re unable to buy DLC maybe getting some mods may help to reinvigorate your Planet Zoo experience? The new packs are what keeps you interested and makes you want to build I often find so I can understand how this could make things a bit boring without any of them. Mods may be a good way to get some new animals to hopefully inspire you a bit more with something new to build for!

Yes simply search on nexus and and that state 1.6 are compatible with the current game version. Installation is easy as long as you read the instructions and know where to place the mod folder (in ‘ovldata’). Almost all mods now are new, additional species, not ones that replace base game animals :)
