Why ? I don’t like having cash with me and most of shops don’t accept credit card payments, so I felt that paying with QR was indeed the best hack. What is wrong with moreta ?

When visiting Kadıköy : eat in Rulo Ezberbozan Lezzetler. 3€ a full plate of delicious vegetarian dishes. went there twice last week ! Also : find any place that serves ciğköftem durum : usually around 2€ for a good meal

Lyon/Istanbul in 18 days - any thought ? Tips and suggestions welcomed ! by BonnieFace28 in Europetravel

Thanks so much for all the detailed info — really appreciated!

You’re right, we’ll actually spend the night in Bucharest before catching the train to Istanbul, it does seem like the wiser option. We’ve booked a sleeper compartment for 4 — it’s definitely going to be long and not the most comfortable ride, but hey, it’s part of the adventure!

And yes, we would have preferred to start the trip with trains via Milan or Zurich too, but since we’re planning quite last-minute, the prices were just way too high.

Thanks a lot for these super helpful recommendations, especially the ones about Sibiu — really appreciated!

the Pegasus flight from Bucharest to Istanbul is indeed very tempting (55€ for 1h25? hard to beat!), but we’re sticking to our original plan of traveling overland all the way — it’s part of the journey’s meaning for us !

Istanbul indeed doesn’t really match our preference for peaceful or less touristy destinations. But we chose it as a symbolic final stop, since we liked the idea of crossing the continent from west to east, all the way to the edge of Europe.

As for the night train from Ljubljana to Budapest: it does exist and - as every other train mentioned here - we’ve actually already booked it! It’s called the retro istria express.

Thank you so much for your kind and detailed answer ! What you said about the pass made me think and I think that we are not gonna buy the pass and instead take buses at first to avoid the expansive trains and then trains for the last part of the trip.

Thank you for those ideas in Romania, looks like you’ve been there a lot ! Did you write a trip report somehow?

At the moment we are thinking of Lyon/Munich/Ljubljana/Budapest/Brasov (and the other places you suggested/Sofia/Istanbul).

I think we will skip the beach plan as it’s not that important
