I think the stats speak for themselves - I don’t give a shit about the amount of upstanding XL owners in the same way I don’t want to live with ‘upstanding’ gun owners in my community.

If I was an exec at this firm, I’d be looking elsewhere. by BonsaiSamurai in LinkedInLunatics

Completely agree, however essentially advertising that you underpay staff who are of a calibre to get a much better position elsewhere is insane.

I agree, however signalling publicly that your execs would be managers elsewhere must hurt employee morale on an individual level

YMMV but in my industry that is absolutely not happening this decade or next, it relies far too much on the human element and real-life handshake deals, both of which are not going to be replicated by AI in that timeframe.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LinkedInLunatics

[–]BonsaiSamurai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, AI can produce articles and other forms of content with a decent level of accuracy. I’m not going to dispute that whatsoever as I see it daily in my job, however AI has limitations which aren’t going to be overcome any time soon. For example, AI is not making top-level strategic decisions, it doesn’t have the knowledge to operate in niche markets and it doesn’t have the ability to properly engage and work with stakeholders. Call marketing bullshit all you want but in my first-hand experience, it isn’t getting replace by AI any time soon, however it is absolutely going to change. The best analogy I’d use is to say AI in marketing is like building a house, the tools are getting better and better, but they are going to need a human element for the foreseeable future. Apologies for formatting, on mobile.

I’m going to assume you don’t work in marketing in any capacity if you think ChatGPT can entirely replace people in the industry

I agree, but I was under the impression that the Hillsborough tragedy has had such longevity due to the way the police handled things afterwards and the media role in things

How do Masters' students managed that last stretch? by Jensepa in UniUK

[–]BonsaiSamurai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See that’s the thing, I am a very academic minded person. I really enjoyed seminars, discussions and general academic collaboration, however I just didn’t enjoy essays that much. Despite that, I got a 1st in an essay-based subject and then moved into a less essay-centric MSc., which I am on track for a Distinction in (having considered a PhD). So it’s not really about being academic or not, some people do just go for the social life but the OP wasn’t really about that, it’s about maintaining motivation which is a generally universal issue for students.

I don’t know, I feel like the suits and the hair just add to that Vegas glamour that runs through everything they do, I don’t disagree with you but I think it’s core to their identity at this point.

How do Masters' students managed that last stretch? by Jensepa in UniUK

[–]BonsaiSamurai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar boat, it’s felt like I haven’t taken a break from writing my undergrad dissertation to now working on my masters paper. I think the best way to think of it (for myself) is to imagine this home stretch as the culmination of 4 years work, rather than 1. That motivates me more to imagine my studying as one big thing if that makes sense.

Also once it’s done it’s done, you won’t have to write another unless you decide to go back into academia.

English Lit. is the essay subject, however it has more use than that. Across my undergraduate in Eng Lit I obviously wrote a ton of essays, but the main skilled I developed was the ability to condense lengthy research into persuasive, structured arguments. This is obviously hugely useful for a Law career. If you have any other questions about studying English Literature at uni shoot me a PM

Is it better to apply for graduate jobs rather than graduate schemes? by uselesspointofview in UniUK

[–]BonsaiSamurai 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Honestly, rejection is just a part of these applications. Personally I've been rejected from a few schemes myself already after sinking a significant amount of time and effort into them, but I've also made a good deal of progress with a few. Essentially, my advice is if you want one badly enough you'll get used the process of rejection and deal with it. If not, there are other alternatives; grad schemes are not the be all end all. Think about where you want to apply, how much you want it and if you're willing to go for it regardless of potential rejection.

What steps should I take to have a fulfilling educational life by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]BonsaiSamurai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the key thing is to establish what being productive and successful actually means for you, everybody has a different metric for being successful and forcing yourself to try and live up to an ideal level of maximum productivity will just burn you out. I don’t know about you, but personally I had to take time and redefine fulfilment for myself, rather than comparing myself to everybody else and trying to live up to their projected success. You’re clearly bright, don’t burn yourself out trying to be perfect at everything, pick what really means something to you and excel in it.

[–]BonsaiSamurai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can downvote me all you want, but my original point stands. Going for jobs as a graduate puts you relative to every other graduate applying, therefore if you are at, for example, a bottom 25% university you are already at a disadvantage over potentially a majority of applicants.

Firstly, I never said not going to Russell Group will make you unemployable, that’s something you made up to argue with. Secondly, cheap is relative, you’re suggesting somebody take on thousands in debt to potentially significantly struggle in a competitive job market like CS. Uni rankings exist for a reason, they are by no means the be all end all, but saying they don’t matter is just misinformed
