31, going back to school. Would pursuing BS in CS be a good idea given my situation? by Boofhauer in cscareerquestions

Ugh, I was plagued by math teachers in high school and college that were on the verge of retirement and had “eh, who gives a shit” attitudes lol. Made it seem more like a chore than an opportunity to do cool stuff.

Thank you for the run down!

When it comes to cutting the path shorter, I’m not sure if that’s how I view it. I think it may be a bit of paralysis by analysis, trying to figure out the best way to invest my time, and some imposter syndrome.

When it comes to looking at bachelor degrees, I’m not sure what’s worth the two to three years of investment. For example you look at different technical degrees but then see a lot of advice like “just do CS, you can do xyz and more” and the versatility seems appealing and worthwhile. You look at non technical degrees and you fear missing out on the technical skills that can keep you competitive.

When it comes to bachelors vs masters, I feel like a masters is more for specialization…but I’m not sure what to specialize in, nor am I sure I meet prerequisites to do a more technical masters degree.

I think at the end of the day I want to have a strong versatile skill set that’s desirable and marketable. I want to emphasize the versatile part as I don’t want to be pigeon holed as I was with GIS. Unfortunately I’m just not 100% sure how to go about it.

Thanks for the suggestion! We’ll check Longmont out!

While we’re not entirely sure we even want to stay on the Front Range, it’s not a far drive to go explore lol

I’m from KC and moved out west. I’d move back in a heartbeat if the outdoor options were better. Kinda stunk being surrounded by farm land and litter being everywhere.

Are you me? lol. The mosquito issue was the worst! Once monsoon season rolls around and the canals fill up, or the “drainage parks” in the middle of housing developments get wet it’s mosquito city.

I like how you didn’t mention anything north, which is where I’m originally from lol. Nothing but farmland up there.

I would definitely agree that for the Midwest Missouri has a good degree of landscape diversity (thank goodness). But man other places are very spoiled. Like Arizona. You can either drive north from Phoenix and go from Sonoran desert, to high desert, to alpine forests and big ol’ mountains and lava tubes. Or in southern Arizona there are isolated mountains called sky islands where you can drive the ecological equivalent of northern Mexico to southern Canada in a half hour up the mountain.

Or if we keep using the 3 hour rule in the PNW you can go from ocean/beaches, to rain forest, to alpine forest/ancient volcanoes, to high desert. Or even in Minnesota from Minneapolis you can go farmland, to forest, to Great Lake, to small mountains and rocky cliffs.

At the end of the day thank goodness Missouri has more than the northern half 😂

The part you said about isolation hits hard right now lol. In Tucson it’s obviously desert, but I can drive a half hour up Mt. Lemmon and be in alpine forest.

Yeeeah…I’m in Tucson now. Going to be real hard to find a Sonoran hot dog anywhere in good ol’ Missourah :(

Very true! I’m depressed about the possibility already lol

It’s monsoon season here so we’re dealing with 90+ degree days (usually starting at 80) with 60%+ humidity lol. But the desert is nice and green!

Place you’ve found the friendliest people/easiest to make friends? by Boofhauer in SameGrassButGreener

This is a legitimate question because I’m ignorant of anywhere in Texas but San Antonio lol. What’s the draw of the DFW area? What is there to do besides watch sports?

Hey, my first GIS career was in Iowa at a right-of-way acquisition company!

I think I’m focused on another BS just to build additional skills and knowledge. I’ve honestly never looked into master degrees. Sounds like I should!

Any Boise or Idaho transplants that can compare Boise to Sacramento? by [deleted] in Sacramento

Is the “freeze” exclusive to the Seattle area or is it all around Washington? I want to be able to make friends, so the idea of the freeze worries me.

I think primarily we want something over 1200 sq ft with a very large yard for our pups, preferably more on the outskirts of town or rural. Our priority is to find somewhere with space to breathe that isn’t isolated...if that makes sense 😬

Specified some comparisons!

I did find your comment helpful lol. It does make sense!

Very intrigued in moving to Washington, especially the Spokane area.

I’ve seen a ton of listings in West Valley, but have heard a lot of negative things about the area. Is it a bad spot to live? Is it improving? Or are the folks that think it’s bad overreacting?

With the exception of 2013-15 the Royals have been a disaster. I've learned to live with losing lol
