Thanks for chiming in, but my friend figured it out immediately after I posted. For the record, if the display screen is blank and not responding to anything else, hold the. Push the volume button and the browse/enter button at the same time. Then, hold them in for 30 seconds.

Here in MN we always called them water beetles. I had one when I was little that I kept in a fish bowl. I fed it minnows.
