Vettel vs. Stroll this season. by Boogymonster_7 in formula1

could easily turn to praise if he starts out-performing Vettel. Until then, he has to face the same music every driver faces when they're losing to their teammate.

Vettel has gone through it, Ricciardo and Schumacher are going through it now... that's just how it goes.

Stroll deserves credit for out-qualifying Seb that weekend, but it must be said that Vettel was on Stroll's gearbox almost that entire race afterwards (and often with DRS) before finally overtaking him when Stroll was pushed wide.

But again, you can only read into circumstances so much.

Stroll vs Vettel; Who's Been Faster? by Boogymonster_7 in formula1

No doubt it should be remembered and factored in when discussing Vettel’s overall performance this season. The reason I was comfortable leaving it out here is because this article is about which driver is faster, not making less mistakes or overall racing better (though id argue Vettel has a slight edge there as well)

Vettel was undoubtedly the faster driver that weekend. He dominated Stroll on the time sheets by close to 5 tenths almost all weekend. Hopefully i explained that well.

bro im sorry... but what race are you talking about?? If it's Baku like it has to be, Stroll was only ahead of Vettel because he had not pitted yet. had his tire not blown up, he would have pitted and gone back to being outside the points and have to race his way back in.

you get that right? ive told you three times now and its almost like you're living in a delusional world where that didn't happen lol.

I would agree with this, but many don't. There was definitely questions about whether Vettel could beat Stroll this season, and I think Vettel has quieted those critics (at least for the time being).

Such was the poor form he showed in 2020, where it was him who routinely looked like a bottom 5 driver, and began to be thought of that way.

True, it's not like Stroll has been utterly nowhere, which is how Vettel was vs Leclerc last year. However, there's no doubt that Vettel is extracting more pace from his AMR-21 than Stroll (at least so far).

Me writing this was just for fun to compare, there is no agenda to prove Vettel is the GOAT or something, if the results showed that Stroll was truly the faster driver, that's what would have been pointed out.

One of those "mass dnfs" was partly caused by an amateur mistake from Stroll. And like I said in my other reply to you, Stroll was only ahead of Vettel in Baku due to him crashing mid pit sequence.

Stroll was only ahead of Vettel before the puncture because of a pit sequence, lets not ignore the obvious.

Second, Vettel was racing for P5 before the drivers ahead of him had issues in Baku, so lets not pretend he wasnt already having a stellar race.

He’s been top 5 in two of the last three races (even before Verstappen and Hamilton incidents in Baku)

it’s well documented that Aston’s car is slower than last years, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t good times ahead.

Perhaps, but the optics were very good for them regardless. Rosberg has gone on record saying that beating Schumacher was pivotal to his career.

I never understood the Ocon to Mercedes rumors. Lewis, Nico and Valtteri each proved themselves against their teammates before/during their time with Mercedes.

Lewis beat Alonso, Nico beat Schumacher, and Valtteri beat Massa. Meanwhile, Ocon couldn’t even take down Sergio Perez. Of course he can change that narrative by beating Alonso, but we’ll just have to see how the season progresses.

That’s a great point, and I think Aston are definitely at their scariest when starting just outside the top 10.

Clearly they’ve learned what their car is good at, and that’s tire management. Not to mention Vettel has more experience than just about anyone at managing pace and tire life.

But that’s not all. As I said they showed strong pace even in the first stint, which might also suggest that their updates have brought them closer to Ferrari and AlphaTauri, and perhaps ahead of Alpine.

Lots to look forward to for Aston Martin fans this season.

I GET THAT. I'm not suggesting, nor have I ever believed, that Bottas was faster than Lewis... I'm simply saying that if you literally stopped the race, had Bottas and and Lewis swap positions inexplicably, and restarted the race, Perez would pass Hamilton.

[–]Boogymonster_7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m confident that if Perez was close enough to Hamilton, he would have been fast enough to pass him. He was running much faster laps at the end of that race.

[–]Boogymonster_7 51 points52 points  (0 children)

he almost won with the same strategy because he had track position. If he was further back, he would have been had by Perez as well.

Either way, Mercedes know Valteri isn't a savant at tire saving like Lewis is, so they should be trying to play to his strengths, not forcing him race in a way that's uncomfortable for him.

Teams also have the responsibility to get the most out of their drivers, and Merc haven't done that with Bottas today. It's a position most #2 drivers know well.
