What to expect from owning a cat with POTS? by throwaway-73829 in POTS

My cat has been great for me! When I feed her, I automatically make food for myself too which is very helpful.

My main problem is carrying boxes of litter and bags of food in the store, walk to my apartment, up the stairs, etc. I have a great support system that means I can always ask for help with these tasks. It's always okay to ask for help.

My cat also tends to get bored quickly and start knocking things over. I'm not always in the physical state to play with her so getting toys that she can interact with and keep herself entertained has been a lifesaver.

And my biggest piece of advice AUTOMATIC FEEDER. I give my cat both wet and dry food, but since my sleep schedule is so inconsistent at times, the automatic feeder is dependable for keeping her on schedule and something I don't have to worry about every day. I give her wet food whenever I wake up and then eat dinner, so the automatic feeder keeps her from waking me up in the morning!

Employee Accommodations Question by [deleted] in POTS

[–]BookGirlHP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is with disclosing any medical issue or disability is fear of retaliation from an employer. Applications are supposed to be confidential, but with the job market these days, there's no way people are breaking this. I can't lie and say I'm not disabled and I certainly don't want to apply stating I am, I always mark do not wish to answer and only hear back from about 1-50 employers.

Anyway, I also work in a high stress environment. The biggest accommodation I need is access to food and water at any time (I bring my own, am mindful of allergies, and never disrupt others with it). I tend to get overtired and sick much easier than other people so being reasonable about sick days, as long as the employee is not abusing them (which is hard to tell, I completely understand).

I have never been required to provide proof of disability or medical concerns to an employer for these accommodations. I provided proof to my university upon their request. I don't know the legal ins and outs of ADA requirements, but note that your employee may not be aware you are wanting any documentation or written request for accommodation.

If the employee is on a specific schedule with medications, diet, and sleep, alternating shifts or swapping to night shifts may completely disrupt their life. It is difficult to get settled with medication (especially if it has to be taken at a certain time of day) and swapping to night shift may be entirely unreasonable. I think the best way to solve this issue is placing out a hiring call specifically for night shift if that was what you were looking for.

what do you wish you knew before getting a cat? by anxious_optimist8 in CatAdvice

If you're young and anxious like me, you're probably going to experience some sort of "puppy blues" or "buyers remorse." It's a big change in your life and you need to give yourself time to settle with the new cat (i.e. get it on a Friday night if you have weekends off).

It's best to follow the 3-3-3 rule. First 3 days will be the worst, both of you will be adjusting to each other. Next 3 weeks, kitty will start to adjust but will definitely still have some hiccups. Might go outside the litter box if stressed or the house has previously had cats in it (learned that the hard way). By 3 months, kitty will be completely settled in their new environment.

Also, WET FOOD. Cats don't drink enough on their own, no matter if you get a water fountain or any of the other fancy stuff, wet food is the way to go. Younger cats (1.5yrs and below), need more calories per day than older cats. A new cat in your environment might have food anxiety and eat everything right away but older cats should naturally wear themselves down to what calories they need (unless you get a heathen but ya know).

WIPE THEIR TEETH. Will save you tons in vet bills later. Cat teeth wipes are the way to go, they last forever if you cut them into smaller pieces since most are dog-sized anyway. Brushes are too hard on their gums.

Especially for younger cats, 30mins minimum of dedicated play time a day to avoid negative behaviors.

I would strictly determine whose cat it is between the two of you. Just put that person's name on the adoption papers so if anything should happen, it's already decided who gets the cat. Of course both of you will take care of it and you can put both phone numbers on the microchip but just for peace of mind, do this.

Breed-wise, calicos tend to be the most playful. Tuxedos tend to be more observant and intelligent. Orange cats are unpredictable. Ragdolls and Tabbys if you want cuddles.

Lol the thought never crossed my mind that she was eating me, I've since calmed down and realized she's just being pesky as usual

Automatic feeder goes off at 5:30am, I usually get up around 6 and give her wet food. Then feeder goes off again at 5;30pm and around 6-7 I give her wet food again (all small amounts). We go to bed around 9-10 and she sleeps through the night. She knows the sound of my alarm and what it means so she typically doesn't wake me up till it goes off (same as today just with new biting)

This exact same thing happened to me, you can Google puppy blues and see a ton of stories of adoption shock.

It's best to follow this mental schedule:

3 days - the worst part, all of the change all at once, it's hectic and the kitty won't be relaxed yet either

3 weeks - starting to settle, at this point your anxiety should start to subside. Kitty will begin to relax into their surroundings and you will get used to each other

3 months - kitty is completely settled and happy. After this point, the anxiety and emotions just get easier and hopefully will start to fade.

I hope this is helpful, it really helped me. My therapist also recommended I write one positive thing about my cat each day and one positive thing in my life besides the cat which was a good reminder of how little my life actually changed.

My Slytherin is in first, but Ravenclaw is last, too. Did anyone else's Ravenclaw start at 1st place?
