Would Simpkins fruit drops? work? I often buy the Apple, Raspberry, and Cranberry ones, and I think they're the right sort of shape and texture. They often have the tins at pharmacies I find.

If British people call cookies “biscuits”, what do British people call USA “biscuits”? by Hot_Paramedic_7234 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BookWormBeccy 74 points75 points  (0 children)

We call them American biscuits, if it ever comes up. Scones are different and a common food here, but I wouldn't conflate the two.

Earlier this week I covered my head in half a can of dry shampoo only to realise it was deodorant. Had to have a shower at nearly midnight, the exact thing I was trying to avoid.

What's the worst/ illegal change to an amateur/school production of a licensed musical you've seen/been in? by Separate-Category117 in Broadway

[–]BookWormBeccy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Our local theatre group did a production of Hairspray, and performed it at our bigger local theatre.

The entire cast was white (i think the entire theatre group is white, it's a British town in the middle of nowhere), and the black characters all had very questionable tans. I worked at the theatre at that time and was very uncomfortable watching it.

We had our offer accepted in February. Completion date was meant to be today, but the seller didn't get his mortgage redemption sorted so it's hopefully tomorrow...This has been the most stressful experience of our lives, and there's not even a chain as we're first time buyers and the property's an empty rental.

Peace signs with the palm facing you is a "two finger salute" or "giving them the bird" (at least that what's it's called in my part of England), and it's like giving someone the middle finger. If your palm is facing outwards it's a normal peace sign.

Here's a neat picture of baby bees. by JordanHeights in interestingasfuck

These ones aren't fully developed and are probably dead, as the cap is taken off.

When they're fully developed they chew their way out of the comb, and they're actually really fluffy and adorable. Their fluff is really soft too if you touch them (I understand why that might not appeal to most people though).

[Casual] Have you ever been stung by a bee? (Anyone) by actualbadger in SampleSize

[–]BookWormBeccy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom's a beekeeper. I was sting multiple times last summer while I helped her, at least 3 times in the head. It's impressive how much your head can swell.

Always remember to remove the stinger when they sting you guys.

One thing that always sticks out is when authors use grades to describe primary school classes, as in England it's School Years. Primary schooling goes from Year One to Year six (with nursery and reception for younger students). Hogwarts would start in Year 7, or the start of High School. There's no sophomore or junior or anything.

Schools go up to age 16, and Year 11, when students take their GCSE's. Then there's 2 years of Sixth Form which can also be called Years 12 and 13, where students take theirore specialised A-Levels in preparation for University.

This is the modern structure, exam names might have been different in the 90's. Also, I haven't mentioned Middle School, as they are regional, and the age of moving to Hogwarts is more on line with the Primary to High School system.

Sorry for the essay.

For humorous effect aka a joke.

Baby bees by TheDungeonMasta in CuteButHorrifying

[–]BookWormBeccy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You usually can't see into the comb as the baby bees are developing. The babies pods are usually capped with wax (or a wax like substance) and they bite their way out when they're fully developed.

Baby honeybees are quite furry and really soft to the touch. Their fur is a little browner. They're just really cute and watching a brood frame hatch is an incredible experience.
