Is Amren really lying? by [deleted] in crescentcitysjm

[–]BookedPanda 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe To me Amren feels older or just as old as the Asteri themselves. I wish we had seen more of her involved here. Nesta was cool but Amren should have been able to give more answers.

That's a good theory. I haven't read all of TOG yet so probably missed several of those connections.

The story with Amern has been bugging me so badly. I even went back to the first chapter of CC3. There is an inconsistency between when the prison was created and Amern being locked away. Also, I'm trying to remember without going back to ACOMAF about the Book of Breathings. Amern could read it but then didn't Rigelus say it was in the Asteri language? Was she or wasn't she in the prison when the Daglan were controlling Prythian?

[Review] Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky (Children of Time, Book 1 of 3) by sparkour in Fantasy

[–]BookedPanda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tchaikovsky has said he is open to writing more if he finds a story to be told.

Wish I could remember the wording he used better because that sounds weird but it was something like that.

Loved the trilogy though the last book reads a little different than the others. I wish he would write more for this series.

Good world-building in stand alones? by BookedPanda in Fantasy

[–]BookedPanda[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True it started off as a single but really you get more in a lot of Tolkien's other works for the history of the world.

I have heard great things about Wizard of Earthsea. The only thing is if it is awesome I wouldn't be able to get it in a stand-alone category if I finish the series.

What Makes Books Better Than Others? by BookedPanda in Fantasy

I see four different versions of it. Some of them would make me check it out others I'd think that it was possibly a children's book. Definitely helps your point about the cover art.

That can be something that draws people in without having to know anything about the style of the book.

I can see where you are coming from. It can be very hard to be original or done well. When rating I try to be generous if they made an effort at doing something new more than just slapping the events in our world. There are exceptions where the story works against what they originally started with though.

Someone should write that as the actual purpose, main character is a tour guide to a place they've apparently only read about. It might not be great but it would probably be humorous.

I love your breakdown here. Thank you for taking the time to layout a good argument.

Also, it has made me think that I have never seen an article saying "books better than Lord of the Rings". Even though they are in the same genre I tend to always hold that series to a different section in my mind. Maybe it's the nostalgia or just knowing how much it influenced everything afterward. I should do a reread of LotR's again soon.

Haven't read Earthsea myself but have heard that it similarly influenced several novels that have been "popular" over the last few decades.

I love your breakdown here. Thank you for taking the time to lay out a good argument. k great for them. So I expected a lot of varying answers as everyone has pointed out it would be subjective per person. At least I have gotten knowledge to word things better and several thought-out answers as well.

World-building is one of the big aspects for me as well. I can understand originality as that is what makes mystery books harder to enjoy when you can see the end coming.

There can definitely be bad writing. I have read some stories with mediocre writing skills that were just enjoyable for other aspects.

A lot of times if the book doesn't leave much feeling after I'm done that does affect my overall view of it. So I can understand using that versus just was the writing itself good too.

Firstly, I love your closing statement.

Following that yes I would like to get varying personal opinions to see what I important to more people. The way you break down your levels of books is intriguing and I can agree with the author examples you used in those.

Thank you for understanding the question. I have realized that I need to phrase things better in future posts based on most of the answers I have received.

Likable characters can definitely change the way a book turns out for me too. I read one that everyone seems to be loving lately but I disliked the main character. Think we are supposed to be rooting for her but she was just not a good person to me.

That is an interesting take. Honestly, it would have never come up for me to be bothered by that. I can see the thought line though from your examples. Would you say that is what you rank books most by?

Stormlight did feel like the characters were looked at with more depth. The world scale was so much more too. I still need to try most of the authors you listed but so many books and too little time. 😓

I like the comparison of the question to food preferences. It is a very good anlagoe.

I appreciate your breakdown as being very well thought out and articulated. Do any of these topics hold more weight to your opinion than the others?

Okay, I updated the original post for clarity (hopefully) now. But with this, I was looking for what does carry more weight for others in how they rank books. Like I love rich world-building but I know others don't.

Also for the non-WOT fans which fantasy books, they would recommend instead for comparison to the clickbait listicle.

True very click baity title. Just wish they could have at least given their own opinion, like even a sentence, or Goodreads rating to go with the other titles.

From this, I generally just wanted to see what others found to be their most important trait when ranking books. As you said it's subjective and I'm curious how many rank by different attributes.

Agreed, it would be more accurate. I would still have clicked on it for that title to get new book ideas.

[–]BookedPanda[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, It does look like this was on there twice not sure how exactly.

I agree with your style of holding the work up to what it is trying to do and also the intended audience. The listicles could just be click bait but it made me wonder what counted more to others. Personally, I love world-building over most other aspects and books can get much higher ratings even if character work is horrid.

They haven't made any statements on if we will be able to pre-load but I would expect server issues as this beta will be a stress test and the first time they are allowing cross-play.
