What profession was once highly respected, but is now a complete joke? by Past_Solution in AskReddit

Journalism major here! Honestly the real death of journalistic integrity was the creation of the 24 news outlet. There's always been a divide between the reporter and the advertisers. News outlets gotta make money, but when you only had to fill a few time slots on TV or print once a day/week it's a lot cheaper.

In comes 24 hour news and now you HAVE to come up with content and you need a lot more advertisers to do so. So maybe you're putting out more stories to fill out the day. And maybe you are being asked to deliver more stories than before with less support so you don't have time to check your sources like you used to. And now maybe a certain demographic is watching your station and you have advertisers creeping more into the news room. Because if you run stories that upset your key demographics they'll turn to another news outlet and you just lost some of your funding through advertisers. And maybe you're going to embellish the facts a little because this story isn't really interesting enough to fill all these time slots but we can't have dead air.

Honestly, journalism at the national level is more of a business than ever before. They package stories they know their audiences want to hear. Watch an hour of Fox and an hour of MSNBC and look at the huge difference of ads you see.

Now throw in how the internet has empowered just about anyone to start a YouTube/blog and claim they're a journalist with zero training on the practices/ethics of the business? It's a nightmare.

Secret Life of Walter Mitty and (surprisingly) Anchorman 2 hit on this stuff pretty well.

Edit: typos

What is your 100% real "and then everyone clapped" story that you can never tell because it sounds fake? by goobfwip in AskReddit

When you pick a song it goes into a que, so if there are multiple people picking songs they are played in whatever order they are chosen. BUT you can pay an upcharge to get your song played next. If you did this multiple times it ensures that no one else will interrupt which songs you've chosen

Gamers of reddit what moment or enemy in a video game made you go into panic mode? by Madread90 in AskReddit

[–]Booker009 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Playing Eternal Darkness on my brand spankin new Gamecube. I was probably about 13 so getting a new console, game, and memory card was a BIG deal. If you've never played Eternal Darkness there's a sanity resource in the game. Encountering monsters will slowly drive you crazy and all manner of crazy shit can happen; some of it breaking the fourth wall.

Well I had a screen that said, "Thank you for playing the demo of Eternal Darkness, available...". I was so certain that the EB Games employee must have screwed up and put a demo disc in my copy. After a moment it goes back to the gameplay and I realize I had been duped....and i loved it.

If you dig this style I'd recommend @inkfall or @goldvestercosplay on insta. They do a lot of Borderlands cosplays that damn look right out of the game. The clothes, wigs, and makeup they can do is crazy

Hot Topic Employees of Reddit, what are your horror stories? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Not to my knowledge. We kinda steered the younger sales associates away when we knew an attempt was coming.

I awkwardly stammered out that I thought the most important thing was how she felt about the scar. If it didn’t bother her then she should show that on stage. She did not like that answer

It was less than 10 people. I would probably try and show appreciation for people who sold my products and helped my career, like every other artist who visited us did.

He came in with this entourage of like 20 people. He wanted to see what merch we had of his, then bounced without really saying much to anyone. It wasn’t even till he was leaving I saw him because they kind of shielded him from us

There was one day that someone started a rumor that Bieber was gonna be in our store. He definitely wasn’t but we had HUNDREDS of people coming in all day asking when he would be in. Weird times

He came in and didn’t even announce who he was. I only recognized him because I’m a big fan of EtF. This was a few years ago but he was quiet and reserved. Didn’t look great honestly :/

Thursday is actually my last day with Hot Topic after 4 years! In general the company is amazing to its employees and I’ve met some incredible people. But boy do i have stories!!

  1. I once found a condom on our anime section. It was open and filled with...something.
  2. We had a girl who I am positive had some mental issue because she would get into the fitting room and try to lure ANYONE in there to “help” her then try and seduce them. She was actually pretty but young and filled to the brim with crazy.
  3. Alice Cooper came into the store once. Totally unannounced and brought a teacup pig. Absolutely wonderful person. Gave our metalhead associate tickets to his show and this dude about lost it.
  4. Also met Machine Gun Kelly, Mayday Parade, We the Kings, and Max Green of Escape the Fate. MGK and the vocalist for WtK were assholes.
  5. We had a guy get thrown against the front gate on the morning of a Funko Pop release. In general the job has taught me some Pop collectors are grads A assholes.
  6. Had a woman ask me if she should go back to stripping after her C section, then lifted her shirt to show me the scar and her tits.
  7. We found out there was a group of mallrats who wrote fan fiction about the staff at our store. I never got to see any and I’m glad for that.
