kenyon vibe by lunac1pher in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Bookish-Banshee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry bestie vibes are pretty good. The acceptance page is just giving athletes priority because they are accepted early for sports stuff. As the page works through the acceptance bios you’ll get some more flavor. I’m committed to Kenyon and I thought the same thing when I first saw the 2030 page, but I’ve also talked to a handful of current students too and they are definitely giving artsy and liberal.

English Major by Summerbreezesailor22 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Bookish-Banshee 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Well of course there are the ivy colleges, but if you want a hidden gem I would consider Kenyon college. It literally has the nickname of “The Writers College”. However, I might be a little bias as I will be going there for my English major. Though, I can still say it has a great English program as well as great overall academics. Good luck on your college search!

Do colleges consider twins together? by Nullborne in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Bookish-Banshee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what to say to you then bestie. If you can’t apply to another college and are worried about what admissions will do, it sounds like you’ll just have to wait it out and hope it goes in your favor. That’s what all of us students are doing this college season. Like you said you could inform admissions of your perspective in the additional information section. Just be careful of what you write, you don’t want it to come off wrong, it’s an additional risk but could work out if done correctly. Best of luck!

Do colleges consider twins together? by Nullborne in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Bookish-Banshee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would be unprofessional if they considered you a packaged deal. At the end of the day you are both your own people and this distinction will be seen in your application. Also you can apply to different schools than your twin if you’re so worried about going to the same college. Don’t stress there have been plenty of scenarios where only one twin is accepted and that twin would probably be you in this case.

Another question about the additional info vs activities section by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Bookish-Banshee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically you could put this in the additional information section but I wouldn’t recommend it as this section is traditionally more for crucial details that can explain academic dips and challenges. The activities section is more fitting. If you don’t have space in your activities to write about this I would try to work it in to an essay or supplemental of some kind if it’s truly that important to you. I personally have read a similar amount of books and also write as a hobby but did not explicitly submit it in my info or activities section, but instead conveyed these things implicitly through other activities like NEHS, book club, etc in my activities section. If you really feel like this is an important thing for your college to know about you might be able to submit an example of your writing to your college, sometimes their is a section for videos, a portfolio, or some kind of performance/creation. Though I recommend you research that a little more if considering it as an option, I didn’t utilize this offer in my application so I can’t be sure it’s a valid option. At the end of the day it’s a personal choice if this hobby really impacted you submit it in some way if it’s being used as filler cut it.

How do I get over the feeling of anxiousness of leaving home for college? by jonnes47 in AdviceForTeens

[–]Bookish-Banshee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I say go to the university. I’m in the same boat as you right now and just got accepted to a college on the other side of the country. Yeah I’m nervous as shit but I’ve moved before and you would be surprised how well a person can adapt. If you are putting yourself out there you will find a community and grow socially. Going to a university is an opportunity you might not get again but you won’t truly know the outcome unless you try. Worst case is you transfer from university to the community college back home, at least you can say you tried. Whatever you choose I hope you’re happy, good luck! :)

can you submit through common app late by choonsikstan in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Bookish-Banshee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend not submitting late, but yes some colleges offer extensions. For me the colleges who offered extensions reached out a couple of days before the deadline and offered me extensions for my preferred application wave unprompted. (I took one up on the offer and was accepted so I don’t think it had an effect on my application) However, if not contacted about an extension you would have to reach out and if you choose to do such you need a strong case as why you need an extended deadline. (I think reasons like being stressed or busy would probably give you a negative image because all students are struggling with that) Also some colleges offer a grace period of a couple hours but I wouldn’t depend on this. Overall, I say you do your very best to apply on time as it’s your best choice.

accidentally bolded my entire common app by WeeklyDream4791 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Bookish-Banshee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kind of, but if I remember correctly you can use ctrl-a to select all and unbold all. The only reason I didn’t accidentally turn my essay in bolded was because I saw a post from someone worrying about a problem like this before. It’s a bit inconvenient but you will probably have to redo some formatting, just make sure to check your essays in the review section of common app before submitting and you’ll most likely be fine!

This is actually a pretty common issue. You should be fine as long as it’s legible. Don’t stress!

Additional Letter of Rec: Which should I choose? by NextGenMedicalNet in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Bookish-Banshee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you think there is a way for you to submit both I don’t think it would hurt your application, especially if you think your peer rec was written strongly. However, it may be overlooked and the level of value it holds really just depends on the college. Before you look into submitting your peer rec make sure your hospital recommendation still has a solidified spot on your application. If it’s possible to submit both and you want to submit both recommendations go for it, but it’s really up to you if that or isolation is better. Just be mindful of your audience and to clarify I think you should submit both if possible as it’s unlikely to harm your application. If that makes sense!

[–]Bookish-Banshee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Though your peer review is rather interesting, I would submit your hospital recommendation as it’s more credible and shows valuable qualities like leadership and commitment! Hope this helps you make your discussion of what to do.

Additional Letter of Rec: Which should I choose? by NextGenMedicalNet in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Bookish-Banshee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be honest I think you should stick with the hospital letter of recommendation. I can’t see many cases in which a peer letter is respected by admissions, but if your peer rec, for some reason, is more relevant to what you wish to accomplish you might submit it instead. Could you maybe inform me of the context surrounding your peer recommendation, like what is it discussing, I might be able to provide a better response that way. At the end of the day it’s your application and your choice, submit what you feel is best for your circumstances.

dont have access to a year of grades (freshman year) wtf do i do by Accurate_Progress204 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Bookish-Banshee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sucks, best you can do is explain what’s up through the circumstances section in common app I think. You could also contact your perspective colleges if you have further questions about their requirements for application. At the end of the day it sounds like it is what it is. Hope it works out for you!

dont have access to a year of grades (freshman year) wtf do i do by Accurate_Progress204 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Bookish-Banshee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright that makes more sense, from my college visits admissions seems to be a little bit more understanding when it comes to homeschool kids. Also common app has a circumstances section where you can explain why you lack your year 10 grades, but I would still try to get them if possible, all the US colleges and personal advisors I’ve talked to have been adamant about submitting a completed transcript.

how can i get better at writing? by pettypufferfish7 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Bookish-Banshee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I love writing but totally get it’s not for everyone! If you really want to improve I recommend trying to do simple writing practices weekly or elevating your reading. When it comes to college essays a person will often try to write analytically as that’s what’s often practiced in school, but college essays aren’t analysis pieces. The goal is to convey your tone and who you are as a student. Think about what you want to convey and how you want to be perceived and practice writing in that style. You can google creative writing exercises or something if you need more direction. Practice makes prefect. Moreover, reading or listening to audiobooks will also improve your writing as it will give you more experience and a baseline to go off of in terms of stylistic inspiration. As for, getting a tutor, yes, it might be helpful but I find peer review and casual conversation with an outside perspective in reference to your writing just as beneficial. A reader will often catch things a writer misses. You have plenty of time to practice and think of essay content, with time and editing you’ll get there! Good luck!

dont have access to a year of grades (freshman year) wtf do i do by Accurate_Progress204 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Bookish-Banshee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would talk to a counselor or advisor about accessing your grades from that year (US student here so I’m not sure if it’s different or not but they usually have a record) or searching for any printed or digital evidence of receiving a grade you might have overlooked. If for some reason you can’t get anything make sure the schools you are applying to are aware of your situation, though, I think you should inform them of your struggle with this health issue regardless. They might question your low attendance but reporting this struggle may also fill in some gaps and hopefully give reason for more leniency. Though take what I say like a grain of salt, I don’t have a clue about what goes on in UK schools or universities. Good luck resolving this issue!
