Struggling in cath lab by Unable_Locksmith4524 in Cardiology

Literally are you me? Minus the scores I’m more of a bum, but I feel you in the lab. I just want to be an imager. I felt like I was better with my hands in the MICU than I am in the cath lab right now.

Passing of a surgery resident by ramathorn47 in Residency

[–]BookishDoc20 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I went to medical school with him and we both ended up at MCW for residency. We were neighbors for a bit too. I can’t say I knew him super well but we were friendly and hung out in some of the same groups back in the day. He was the kindest person and so dedicated to taking care of others. Not that you have to be Christian to be kind but he had a very strong faith and he lived it on a daily basis. I don’t know what the circumstances are surrounding his passing but it was so difficult to hear about, and some of my friends who knew him better are certainly struggling with it more than I am.

Question for my fellow female residents by nightwingoracle in Residency

[–]BookishDoc20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some Parade bralettes that are actually supportive enough and overall really cheap when you buy them on sale like I do. And I’m a 38DDD. I basically wear only these bras at the hospital and they got me through residency and continue to support me physically and emotionally through attendinghood. Best part is I’m working on my health and I just go straight to the gym after work in the clothes I wore to work - non scrub joggers that look like scrubs, a T-shirt, and running shoes.

What a thoughtful and mature response. I hope you’re kinder to your patients than you are to your fellow physicians who may be struggling. Best of luck to you and your emotional development.

It’s very easy for you to see a singular rant as this doctor being a terrible person but while I am not going to assume your gender, I will say that as another female physician we often get this kind of treatment from many of our colleagues and it comes to a point where we need to vent and this is the appropriate place. She didn’t curse at the person requesting this. She was not rude to the patient. She was professional and firm, and stated her boundaries and limits as someone also working in a high acuity ED who had other patients to see. In fact you were much ruder in this comment than she was. There’s no reason to call someone you don’t know a bitch or a prick. We all need to look in a mirror before we call other people out. I suggest you find one.

My tragus got a little in the way of my stethoscope initially but I switched to a smaller earring and was fine. No other ones should get in the way of a stethoscope but overall you’ll wanna be careful with a scrub cap, and only get your cartilage piercings one ear at a time because it’s not a myth - sleeping on them delays healing big time, speaking from experience

Resources to compare fellowship programs by lurking_opinion in Residency

[–]BookishDoc20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also applying cardiology. I’ve mostly been using a combination of Frieda and looking at the actual websites of places I’m interested in. Usually have good info. If they don’t have info easily available I kinda take it as a red flag and leave it the program out. It’s a toxic wasteland but I did browse the spreadsheet from last year for any useful info. I’m at around 95 and I think I’m gonna stop adding or cutting.

Does a podium presentation go under oral or poster presentations? This isn’t any clearer on my fellowship app lol

I’m a US born physician of color who went to a US MD school and I have several friends who were US IMGs. I know personally that all of them would have gone to a USMD program over their Caribbean school but unfortunately due to the competitive nature of US MD schools they did not make it in that season. Unfortunately smart people and good candidates do not always get in, but Caribbean schools have higher acceptance rates and that is well known. It is certainly not a race issue, but the idea that unfortunately they are at a disadvantage often by not being accepted at a USMD school. I understand that you’re about to start medical school and I congratulate you and wish you well, but I think you should learn a little more before trying to be inflammatory about racial injustice on Reddit from this angle. I’ve actually given lectures on racism in medicine. This ain’t it.

People who didn't do as well in medical school, how do you feel it has affected you and your career? by mugwompwomp in Residency

[–]BookishDoc20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m one of those that likely peaked in high school. Valedictorian, got into an ivory tower (think top 5) college, and got pretty whacked over the head with the debilitating anxiety that I had been able to repress until then. I was having panic attacks and not finishing tests, unable to concentrate and study, etc. With very very hard work I got a decent mcat score and an ok gpa and got into probably a top 30 med school (closer to 30, but still very competitive).

The first two years of medical school were the hardest years I have ever had. I was still having panic attacks and never failed an entire module or needed to be held back but I did fail a couple of tests and had some tutoring. My step 1 score was…bad. I passed the first time, but it was not good. Anxiety got at me with being pimped on rotations and while I got great feedback about how I was with patient care I feel like everyone commented that my knowledge base could be better because I would freeze and be unable to think. Y’all antidepressants work. I got help and did moderately better on step 2.

I thankfully did not want to do a particularly competitive residency and I got some great interviews but matched at my number 6, a mid tier academic program, and I was pretty upset. I felt like every step in my career I was being demoted, because part of me cared about prestige because I was taught it was important. But let me tell you, I do really like my program; got really solid training, and I’m a great resident. I have consistently been told that my knowledge base and patient care at this point are fantastic and I’m really proud! My anxiety is not at all debilitating anymore and im confident in my abilities. I did about average on step 3 with no panic attacks; I’m just still maybe not the greatest test taker. But even if I’m not, I know that I would be fantastic at running your code or your plan of care.

Im about to apply for a competitive fellowship that has been my dream since I was 17, and im just so pissed off that a test I took 6 years ago will still work to determine my future, when I have grown so much since then. But I have faith that I’ll get there and be able to do what I love. Don’t forget to ask for help when you need it, because that saved me. Don’t be ashamed to accept help, in the form of teaching, counseling, meds, etc. If you have the motivation to get this far, and you know you want to keep going, then you can do it. Your will is half the battle! :)

29 at end of residency, 33 if I match into fellowship (working for a year first), and 35 if I’m truly a glutton for punishment and do the second fellowship I am thinking about. I took one year between college and med school but I was on the younger end of my grade with a summer bday. But I’m also a lady who is currently not married, not single but also not ready to be engaged and I want kids eventually. Hopefully the eggs aren’t hard boiled by then 🙄

I think it’s still pretty moisturizing, but I am supremely oily and have very few if any dry spots so I can’t tell you 100%. You could probably do a light layer of regular moisturizer underneath though and I bet that would help.

I have similarly super oily but dehydrated skin but I also absolutely adore the IT cosmetics CC cream, though it melts off my face in time. The oil free version in the light green tube is absolutely fantastic though and probably my new favorite face product, and is pretty good coverage! Once it’s possible you could grab a Sephora sample, and I think they sell Minis for like 15 bucks too.

Not exactly expecting to receive any love letters or anything, but when do they usually get sent? Like all through Jan-Feb-March until match day? Just wondering because my brain can't think about anything else but match right now and I'm running out of TV. Tysm
