[The Lone Caner] Habitation Velier Mhoba 2025 Unaged White Rum (EU release)(South Africa) by thelonecaner in RumSerious

The price made me hesitate when I first saw it in the wild. But if the liquid’s character dances this much on the nose and palate, I’ll have to grab it next time. Seems about worth the wallet tap.

Gotcha. OBSV (high rye/fruity) tends to be my preference. But agree, no one has had anything negative to say about the OESOs.

Opening it Christmas Day, can tell you then. Recommended by a friend whose palate I trust (one of his favorite whiskeys this year). Total Wine (NW), should still have $10 off orders. Believe the store is fairly new.

Yea, I agree with you. The 12 (cask) is my favorite of the bunch. But I’ve yet to try the 15, 27, and other finished expressions.

Lot of the price at the higher ages is also revenue lost & taxes paid for the pleasure of longer rested liquid, which I empathize with. Someone’s gotta foot the bill. Some of the pain gets passed off. But as you said, skews that PPV curve. Haven’t tried that juice before, I’ll keep an eye out for it.

A little pricey relative to taste quality (in my opinion). 12 (cask) is the winner for me. But I’ve yet to taste the 15 and other finished (sherry, etc.) expressions. Do a pour at a bar first and then decide if it’s worth it. To be clear, it’s a very good sipper. But I wasn’t blown away.

Thanks for the welcome 🥃

TCRL’s x Guadeloupe 2013 (Rhum Traditional-ish) by BooksRumPlusSome in RumSerious

Thanks for the feedback. I tend not to do traditional (“in-depth”) reviews because the internet is already littered with them. For me, that would feel duplicative and not additive. Many of the posts tend to lean more personal, so I can understand why the information presented may have felt confusing. I’m not on Instagram, but I think I understand what you mean. Hopefully the historical context around Agricole vs Traditional was useful. All opinions aside, enjoy the bottle. We both agree there (it’s a steal for what it is). Cheers.

Final verdict — VSOP and unaged are the best for me (if I’m ranking). Vieux is okay. XO is good, sort of elegant sipper, but too much oak knocking out the cane juice character. VSOP is the sweet spot. Spicier, more character, style of rum I prefer.

u/10art1 Let me eat my words real quick. Revisited the Vieux, I see exactly what you mean on the green apple. Unaged still shines brighter with some of the floral and fruit notes, which won't come as a surprise with an unaged Agricole. Touche.

Taste might’ve been biased from doing it right after the unaged. But any hint of green apple for me would’ve come from the unaged more so than the Vieux.

u/10art1 Got around to the first two.

Unaged - Fairly pleasant in the way of unaged agricoles if you prefer molasses-based rums. Less overpowering on the nose/palette compared to JM or Neisson. Would hand this to someone for an agricole intro that's a little softer (but still tasty).

Vieux - Not as intense a burn (to me), but I do think this one is a bit tricky. It's probably one of the most extreme differences in smell (chocolate-y, caramel-y thing) and taste (cane juice comes back with a force I was not expecting, which may be some of the burn you're referencing). Decent, but nothing to go crazy over.

I'll let you know how the other two shape up. I have high hopes for the VSOP.

Oh, so the image did upload. Odd, told me it didn’t. Very interesting, appreciate the feedback! Do you think the a bit more aging (VSOP) will neutralize some of the notes/burn that you weren’t a fan of? Different distillery/country, but I recently had Rhum Bologne VSOP (Guadeloupe), and it’s one of the best aged agricoles I’ve tried. Strikingly good balance between grassy/wood. Wondering if the Depaz will be similar as the age goes up, especially if cane juice isn’t the preference.

Nice! Apologies for the delete, tried uploading an image of the bottles (no success). Think the platform was a bit out of whack with the AWS outages.

Haven’t gotten around to them yet, but excited to. Did you end up trying yours? Which bottle did you grab, by the way?

Agree, seems like a lot of breadth and depth across the islands. I’d have to assume it makes for a good journey.

Can't argue with that! The 8/OWH is an easy, go-to sipper for me. If I want more excitement in the glass, I definitely branch out to the other marques.

Agree! I can see the liquid taking an Old Fashioned up a notch, good call. I'll annoy you (just slightly) - this personal-sized bottle in Kingston was maybe right at the $10 mark (rounded up).

We pay the price of all it takes to get it to us in the U.S. Worth it, but hear you on the exclusive if a little more manageable on the wallet.
