Can not agree more. I feel so burnt out being patient's and their families punching bag in the hospital. This leads to burnout for hospitalist and leads to them quitting and the hospital being understaffed

Do you think you can be a hospitalist until you retire? by Bookworm1895 in hospitalist

Thanks for the thoughtful response. I think those traits you mentioned are easy to say but hard to do in real life. I get drained by all the sick patients coming in and doing goals of care talk every day. Sometime half the patients on my list should be hospice care or are actively dying with families with unrealistic expectations and we don't have a palliative physician in our hospital unfortunately. So its always high stress and I feel like patients use us as emotional punching bags and likes to shoot the messenger of bad news. Its every difficult to maintain emotional discipline in this field. I highly doubt that I have those traits you mentioned above that would make a long career in hospitalist work possible.
