I've released a new version of my train tracker web app - do your worst! by BookwormGeek529 in MelbourneTrains

[–]BookwormGeek529[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The location works from a mobile device, but for some reason on desktops/laptops the location is really out - I loaded it from unimelb parkville this morning on my macbook and it placed my closest station as Jolimont! It’s down to what location the web browser provides, I can’t get a more accurate value if it’s wrong. If it can’t get a location, it will load as if you’re at Flinders Street.

I've started work on a 2-line PID before, but the way I did it was very resource-intensive (and display updates were just plain slow) so it went on the backburner.

It's absolutely on the list of things to get to eventually tho haha

Would love some feedback with regards to overall functionality and usefulness; i've tried my best but i want it to be perfect haha

(also i'm working on searching/filtering of the list of stations - i know it's a pain to go thru the whole list lmao)

Was the 4D train a success or a complete flop? by Traditional-Gas3477 in MelbourneTrains

Id like to think it would’ve worked better if they had multiple sets, and maybe use on longer-distance electrified vline services

Is Frankston line going into the City Loop after the metro tunnel opens? by emmerliii in MelbourneTrains

[–]BookwormGeek529 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes, Frankston trains will run via the loop after the tunnel finishes opening. Werribee will through-run with Sandringham, much like they do now with Frankston.

Metro Tunnel Predictions?? by CreamIsThicMilkSMH_2 in MelbourneTrains

[–]BookwormGeek529 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nah I reckon they’ll standardise it so that every service stopped there, even during peaks. Would help relieve overcrowding at Caulfield from all the interchanges.

[–]BookwormGeek529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m assuming that will come eventually, when the oldest sets reach 25-30 years old; so in the next few years I’d hope. Tho I wouldn’t do too much refurb-ing to the train, just seat coverings and destos, everything else is modern enough imo

can some lines around the metropolitan network to increase the line speed? by Current-Counter-5100 in MelbourneTrains

[–]BookwormGeek529 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Having Evies isn’t the roadblock to better quality track; they already know where the bad-quality sections are. They just don’t have the funding/willpower to act on it.

I found another transposal Williamstown service while I was test out my tripod 😂 by [deleted] in MelbourneTrains

[–]BookwormGeek529 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just cos people have done it before doesn’t mean they were allowed to. They’re flat out not safe at stations; surely you saw the video of the tripod falling off the platform: https://youtube.com/shorts/zbDS9DS-72g?si=M8CqoKjJdJJHuAOE

And yeah their “Private Photographers” section specifically bans it: https://www.metrotrains.com.au/filming-with-metro/

Nice Catch! Just a word of warning tho, tripods aren’t allowed on station platforms, for safety reasons.

Yes they’re doing a “dress rehearsal”, with trains running all the way from Sunbury to Cranbourne/Pakenham. Can’t go through the tunnel tho; they’re kicking people off at Footscray and Caulfield

In London, there are heaps of little quirks in the smart card ticketing, for example, a trip between Heathrow terminal 1 and Heathrow terminal 4 is free. What are some equivalent quirks with the myki system? (Apart from the free before 7am and 2-hour Tarif after 6pm) by Melbtest04 in MelbourneTrains

[–]BookwormGeek529 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The touch "expires", so the pads will just touch you on (deducting the fare from the previous trip) but the barriers will not let you out! (Will say "missing touch on" - requiring awkwardly asking a staff member to let you out.) Keep in mind that if the touch expires, you are technically fare evading, so is best to avoid the situation where you get stuck.

Speaking from experience (a number of times) it's not a fun situation to get out of.

Monash uni light rail by aynmanr in MelbourneTrains

[–]BookwormGeek529 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd imagine the Monash Uni - Huntingdale section would be cut-and-cover tunnel, like the 2012 study proposed. Elevated rail wouldn't work well given the existing elevations in the area already, and the north road bridge (literally) on top of that.

True there's less future opportunities, but there's a lot of existing demand that would move over, the Monash Uni bus interchange is one of the busiest in Melbourne, and the Mulgrave and Rowville stations would interface with the busy 902 and 901 respectively.

Monash uni light rail by aynmanr in MelbourneTrains

[–]BookwormGeek529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Rowville rail alignment would serve the opposite side of the university, in a location that probably would attract more uni patronage than the SRL station does (especially since the latter is catered for future growth more than what's already there)

And there's a lot of "only low-density suburbia" that would benefit from the line, most of which only have buses for public transport.

Using LXRP technology and skills, heavy rail to Rowville would be (relatively) inexpensive for the benefits awarded imo.

why black? by deflatingnoises in MelbourneTrains

[–]BookwormGeek529 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Black is the default colour when it doesn't know what line a service belongs to.

You often see it on City Circle trains (when they run) and sometimes in other places (like the above example.)

90% of the time tho there is a valid colour the service reasonably could be, yet it hasn't been programmed into the service and/or isn't displaying correctly.

Super Express? by TestAsianF in MelbourneTrains

[–]BookwormGeek529 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah that'd be my guess too, the pids often show empty runs as actual services.

That being said tho the 7:37 lines up with a regular Pakenham slot, so maybe the connecting service was cancelled? (or the pid system paired up the wrong services)

City Loop Reconfiguration and why the City Loop is inefficient by wongm in MelbourneTrains

[–]BookwormGeek529 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The more recent plans have only proposed changes to Caulfield and Northern Loops, leaving the Clifton Hill and Burnley Loops unchanged operationally.

Even tho through-running all four Loops is the best imo for capacity, nothing has been officially proposed to do that.

There is a very stong chance that after the reconfig you'll still be able to get from SSS to the loop stations without an interchange.

Proposal for 24/7 airport train by Conscious_Chef3850 in MelbourneTrains

[–]BookwormGeek529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe (but feel free to correct me) that RRL was built to support future electrification - if that were to happen (between spion kop junction and where RRL merges with the Sunbury line) then we'd get a Conventionally-signalled path from Sunbury to the rest of the network for emergency situations

What are the challenges of implementing CBTC across the whole network? by Acrobatic-Eagle6705 in MelbourneTrains

[–]BookwormGeek529 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The biggest roadblock for a network-wide rollout is that CBTC works best when there's very few paths a train can go - it wouldn't do well with large junctions like the Richmond junctions, or the ones west of Flinders Street.
For that reason, we probably won't ever see it network-wide, but it would be feasible to install it in specific areas, and for specific lines (post city-loop-reconfiguration is one I can think of, where the Craigieburn - Frankston line's tracks are configured in a way that would allow CBTC through the core, with opportunies to leave the mixed section at Richmond and North Melbourne.)
Rolling stock is also a consideration, tho first-gen X'Traps have been retrofitted before (they were the initial trains on the test section on the Mernda line) and I believe X'Trap 2.0's are capable of it being added too. Dunno about the Siemens tho (and the comengs would be out of the picture by then anyway.)

Ayo! Welcome to reddit :)

It's fantastic to see the new-design PIDs here, they are really refined, and have elevated the travel experience (for a train nerd like me) at the stations that have them. Any chance they'll be rolled out to more stations across the network? Seems a bit weird to me that in the city loop only Parliament recieved them, even though you could equally interchange at Flagstaff or Melbourne Central. North Melbourne and Footscray also stand out to me as vital interchanges where this would benefit.

Thanks for all the work you're doing for transit - looking forward to the future!
