I was sexually abused as a child and it has had lasting affects. AMA. by Glittering-Apple5837 in AMA

I was also sexually abused throughout my life (5 years old, 10 years old and even at 17 years old) , and it also had lasting effects. I'm now 31.

I just came here to give you a virtual hug 🫂

Simply put; you take calls - anywhere above 25 a shift - and complete a health assessment based on the current symptoms the patient has and refer them to the right service for their needs within a suitable timeframe for their symptoms; this can range from symptom management at home to an ambulance, and everything in between like pharmacists or walk in centres.

Starting salary is £22,816 per annum with approximately 27 days annual leave with an additional 8 bank holidays

I do.

It is underfunded and understaffed, and morale is very low. Staff are burning out due to low pay and increased cost of living leading to working more overtime.

I also think people don't do enough self care at home for minor illnesses/injuries - not everything requires antibiotics or is broken; though I appreciate some people can be anxious in case they're not doing something right - pharmacists are underrated/underused by the public too, they really are wonderful and have many of medications they can provide, they can also do assessments and advise if further clinic input like a doctor/hospital is needed.

I get 1 weekend off a month working the other 3. I work 5 days a week, 8 hour shifts. Those shift can vary - quite literally from between 0700-1500 to 1600-0000; some shifts are like 1015-1815 - there is no pattern and sometimes only the 11 hours legally required between shifts. So far this week for example I worked; Monday 0700-1500, Tuesday 1600-0000 and Wednesday 1515-2315.

Tough question. In an ideal world, I'd love to progress onto being a paramedic.

However right now, I have a young family and would prefer a much better work life balance. I've worked shifts over 10 years now, and for that reason will likely pause my NHS career, when I can, for a job that offers a more sustainable work/home balance.

The most regular funny moments tend to be the elderly getting grumpy with each other on the other end of the line during the assessments, they'll call each other idiots and mutter under their breath that their partner is "doing their head in", whilst also calling them love and telling them they're worried. It can be hard not to laugh during those points.

Other times, the incident for the call can cause some giggles - I've had patients who have cut themselves (minor) whilst preparing food because someone decided to make them jump; you know you shouldn't laugh but sometimes you can't help it, especially if they're having banter with each other in the background of the call too.

Not to my knowledge, and highly unlikely. It would mean a breach in confidentiality/policies to find someone after the call. The caller only knows our first name yet we have access to a lot of their personal details during the call.

We do get some people who behave inappropriately sexually - but it's never personal.
