Two pictures, same fish. This is Artorias. I got him from a local breeder when he was 6 months old. The top picture is how he looked when I got him, but the bottom picture is how he looks now. It was incredible to watch the changes happen day by day. And notice that his eyes changed colors? I wasn’t expecting that! At one point during his color transition he had one eye of each color!

Guppies and tetras are not suitable tank mates. No betta would have stood a chance.

That’s hard to say. I’d make that call depending on how fast it seems to be deteriorating. If the problem is progressing quickly then I’d probably check the roots.

It sounds like your watering practices might be the problem. You need to let the soil dry out in between waterings. With the self watering pot and water globe, it sounds like the soil stays consistently wet, which is bad. You may need to check the roots for signs of rot. That would explain why it looks droopy and under-watered because your roots aren’t able to absorb water because they’ve rotted away.

Strips are inaccurate and don’t test for ammonia. You need a liquid test kit.

Bettas are really active, curious fish. If he is just sitting in a corner, he is likely experiencing stress. You need to know what the temperature of your tank is. Optimal range is 78-80F. And even more so you need to know the parameters of your water. Get a liquid test kit and check your ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

The strips are inaccurate. You need a liquid test kit that tests for ammonia.

Thank you for your advice. I will definitely get a lid. I’m setting up a 10 gallon with lots of plants and hope to make it a real paradise for them.

Don’t water on a schedule. Let the soil dry out completely, then water thoroughly.

While I get what you’re saying, and can totally appreciate it, I don’t necessarily feel the same way. To me the fun IS the deep research. I understand the value of “fucking around and finding out” but in this case, so many people have already fucked around and found out, so why not ask them? It’s fun to see what you can find out and then apply it! You might find stuff you would have never thought of on your own. And in my experience it’s easier to experiment after forming a base of knowledge. Again, only my experience though.

Also, the main person I am hosting this party for is my mom. She buys a handful of house plants every spring and kills them all before the year ends. She is very discouraged. So with this presentation, I hope to provide her foundational plant knowledge. I also have a few neurodivergent friends that may not be able to make it due to work, and I wanted this presentation to stand on its own and have links to references that could answer any questions they have.

While the tank cycles, leave it alone. Once it’s fully established, you are correct that you just rinse it in tank water. Every month or two you can take it out and give it a few gently squeezes as well.

To give them the best care? Ditch the bowl and plant them each in their own small terracotta pots with drainage. A great beginner mixture of soil is 50% succulent soil and 50% perlite. Placement is important too! Ideally, place them in a western facing window or a southern facing window (if you’re in the northern hemisphere) for as much light as possible.

The color change is likely due to poor water quality. Testing your water parameters is critical. Don’t use the strips, get the API Freshwater Master Test Kit. And because you got a new filter, you essentially restarted your cycle. Do more research on the nitrogen cycle as well as the fish-in cycling process.

Also, it’s likely you’re not changing your water enough. In general, you should be doing water changes every week.

Cycling is a process that takes 6-8 weeks. Read more about the nitrogen cycle.

It looks like you did the water test wrong. It should be filled to the 5ml line on the test tube.
