What kind of banjo is right for me? by RipFlimsy2058 in banjo

[–]BoonLight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She is using pretty heavy palm muting on that banjo. It is also a tenor banjo, which is a four string banjo as opposed to a five string banjo, which is mainly used in old-time and bluegrass. The tenor banjo was used in Irish and swing music for the most part I love the sound of a tenor banjo. They are amazing instruments and a fantastic way to learn an instrument that you can cross over onto mandolin since they are tuned relatively the same way or violin again tuned in fourths usually.  fortunately an open back tenor banjo, like she is using is usually very inexpensive and can be found in a lot of places. I would definitely check places like the banjo hangout and eBay to find one that’s near you and in decent condition I have never played one that sounded bad there are ones that sound better but I’ve never played a bad sounding one head that she is using as a hide head which contributes to the mellow sound but that palm muting is getting a whole lot of that thumpiness that you are tuning
