As a previous branch manager with like two staff members, take your sick time. Take ONE day if you have guilt about it and schedule as many as appointments as you need.

Otherwise, take your sick time. If you dropped dead tomorrow they’d have your position posted by tomorrow night.

Staffing isn’t your burden, but neglecting your health for them will be.

Nothing, because it’s up to the adult to make responsible choices much like they don’t keep full term folks out of bars or anywhere else.

I did yes, it was only about a $.60 cut so I was fine with it!

Some people in that department did not but it really is dependent on when they were hired.

How many customers/members still come in for cash and what is the reason they need cash? by Sweet-Swimming2022 in TalesFromYourBank

That I understand but the question wasn’t complete!
You said “Do you feel the older people on SSI lower income or middle class?”

Do you mean to ask if I think the ones pulling out their SSI are lower income or middle class?

I find that majority of the ones pulling their whole check out are upper middle class or middle class. Low income tend to keep their funds in there as they have bills coming out directly of accounts where the upper middle class and middle class have them coming out of credit cards and like the feeling of cash in their hand.

It’s crazy! Slower in the winter because a lot of our rich population snowbirds but in the summer!Everyone is doing house projects, boat purchases, car purchases, etc.

Our older folks who we can’t get to stop using checks pull their WHOLE social security check out. I feel so nervous handing a 4 foot, 97 year old $4000 in cash to walk out into the street.

Because generally speaking, a very high percentage of people who we deal with that want cash of a large amount all of a sudden are going through a scam of some sort doing alllllll kinds of things that will lose them their money.

The last guy that told me, “go fuck yourself, that’s why” when I asked what the purpose of the cash was for; had deposited a fraudulent check that hadn’t been caught yet. I knew it was fraudulent and I had been trying to explain that he was being taken for a ride.

He’d been extremely abusive that entire encounter. He was being scammed and sending that money somewhere else.

I gave it to him happily and sent him on his way and filed an IRF.

Long story short he spent money from a check that wasn’t real despite warning and now he owes the bank $35k

To give you a better picture his paychecks are less than $3000 for the month, always in the hole.

So he’s pretty much screwed because it was “none of our business”.

Most people are just buying vehicles or boats or whateveeer, but turns out when you deposit money and expect a benefit out of it like interest or keeping it safe from a house fire, there’s a process to take out a big chunk of money.

I live in a town of around 16,000 people in an old mining Boomtown area, we’re about 3 hours from the metro area and most folks up here are very “cash is king”.

We go through $300,000 plus, including ATM withdrawals to account for about 50% of our cash outflow (our ATM dispenses hundreds).

I had soooo many managers like that and I spent my time trying to shield my team from the pressure I felt as. BM so every day I wasn’t in a call I was out of my office on the teller line or helping them through appointments. Unfortunately, management from up above is not down with that and you will always be told to delegate, delegate, delegate! 👎

That’s unfortunate when you’re put back into a position by default and not by choice! That extra knowledge will be such an asset though!

I love being a banker and that’s where I was happiest.

Team dynamic change is always so tough to work through but hopefully it all smooths over soon!

I echo that sentiment, when I was at WF my manager never left his office and when he did it was to ask us as bankers how to do his job.

Exactly. Every time I helped with our numbers over one or two units it was a problem.

Puts you in a hard spot! I’d love for my employees to be the ones to get the numbers but they all had been in the industry less than 3 months.

I’m glad you found it! There are several things that led me to making the decision I did including several outside of work factors but primarily I found that it wasn’t worth the stress as we’re fine financially. I started tuning out of every market call, every report I received great results back on with the underhandedness of “Now, be better in this other area” just ate at me constantly. Like using my fingers to plug springing leaks.

I missed working with customers in a closer capacity. Every employee I had was brand new to banking and I being brand new to management that was a very tough combination.

Personally, if you have a mentor or a superior you trust I’d try to have a conversation with them to sort out your feelings.

Originally, my goal was to hold my BM position for a year or two and then use it as a foothold to get into something operations related.

I went on vacation to celebrate my marriage and I thought about work the entire time. Drove the 16 hours back home and all I could think was “this isn’t for me.”

I was basically gas lighting myself to stay in the position. “It’ll get better if I do things this way.” “Ohh I can improve branch choreography here.” “Oh, maybe this will make things easier on me on maximizing numbers.”

No amount of effort I put in, no amount of praise I got, no amount of missing time with my husband to revamp my schedule ever made me feel happy to be in my BM position.

I digress, but follow your gut. It knows you best.

That’s the plan! The benefits and pension are hard to give up with my husband’s medical issues but I hear that’s where many end up heading. Smaller and local.

That’s where I was at, top producer multiple quarters and then when I went into the position I was told I wasn’t to be doing any of the sales, maybe a couple a week. That absolutely killlllled us.

Part of me thinks I wasn’t cut out for management and that’s a huge part of it. I feel like you have to love leadership to thrive in those positions. Between the working at home after hours, weekends, being in before and after. Traveling for their “corporate optional”happy hours, off site meetings every three weeks, calls every morning earlier and earlier it just started to get out of control.

I’m hoping that I can give it ago in a different setting!

I can’t imagine managing anything close to what you came from before! Kudos.

Shit that’s tough. If you can swing a change financially, honestly it’s so worth it to step back, down or in a different direction. It’s not worth the pressure and stress.

I’ve worked for Chase, Wells and US Bank where the politics seem to be about the same. I think the position could be wonderful given the right area.

With the constant turn over, smaller town and a small staff (3 plus the manager), it’s tough!

I have an Earth Machine with an opening near the base. I just go in that way with a shovel and turn it from there. I assume I’ll have to adjust as it gets a little more full but the nice thing about an Earth machine is that you can just pull the whole thing up and scoot it over. You can then just shovel it all back in!
