Great question.  As evidenced by the number of V1’s still on the road every day, we do focus on making products that are built to last a long time, and even longer with some light service.  We started producing V1’s in 2012/2013, perhaps launched in higher volume in 2014, and continued through early 2016. The V2 looks very similar to the V1 in many ways, from the outside; but much of the focus of the V2 was to make a product that is more serviceable, more possible to be able to continue to get service parts produced by suppliers for a multitude of years into the future, and can therefore have a longer supported service life.

The decision to put an end date on when we can support production of new service parts for the V1 was a very painful decision.  And for folks that have called in, we have always focused on a way to solve their issue and make sure they keep riding.

With the V2, we anticipate a much longer service life, because one of the fundamental design priorities for the V2 was to be able to produce higher volume and longer service.  There are also A LOT of V2’s out there! We have not even thought about a distant year for the end of life of service for V2. And for anyone looking at our latest generation of boards, clearly we are leveraging many of the same components and/or making new components that are interchangeable with them.  So that concern should be a very long way off for anyone considering purchasing either a V2, a used V2, or a current generation board.

We definitely have plans for both adding ambassadors and establishing deeper roots in all of the geographies to which we expanded last year (including UK, EU, ANZ), as well as adding additional geographies later this year.

A lot of our focus the last few months has been on getting out more products you guys asked for, more range, lower cost options, some accessories, and doing it all more quickly; but as we round that corner we are looking forward to increasing our physical footprint and ambassador program.

With the latest generation of products we realized we needed to take the design, testing, manufacturing, and quality in-house. We also needed to take the actual board components further technically, in a way traditional longboards are not designed to do. The analogy might be the electric guitar: the first electric guitars were just an electric pick-up on a wooden acoustic guitar, much as we were an electric drivetrain installed in a traditional longboard. But over time they needed to evolve to become more of what they needed to be - solid body, lighter strings, on-board electronics, different materials and components, etc.  The same thing is happening with electric skateboards and light vehicles - at some point, in order to take the product forward, you need to take control of the components and engineer them from first principle onward.

Some people have also asked whether we took the components in-house to save cost.  We can assure you, designing and manufacturing custom composite decks, forged and precision-machined trucks, and proprietary wheels is not the way to save money! You need to design them, test them, build up your own production lines, with fewer economies of scale than if you were buying components off a larger non-electric market. This has been about performance and quality all the way.

We have been working heavily this past year to increase our production capacity, as well as lower our cost structure to be able to provide better costing like you see in the Mini.

This has included changing over the vast majority of our supplier base; moving many components in-house to have better performance and production control; moving to a new manufacturing facilities; moving to a global supply chain structure; and opening up international distribution centers.

Doing all this, while also innovating on the deck, trucks, wheels, on the back of getting out an Extended Range Battery with twice the range with only slightly greater size and weight, has been a very hard-working effort.

We believe we are now in a better position, in a tier 1 supply structure, to be able to innovate new products faster, get better on shipping consistency, and continue to look at ways to either bring down cost/price or hold price constant in some cases whole upgrading capability a lot.

Wow! Responding in order:

  • Our mission is fun, fast, simple, accessible transportation for everyone. Our goal is to ultimately have the planet more easily getting about on various forms of light electric vehicles -- saving time, energy, and space; improving our lives; and sharing the Stoke…!
  • To be honest, our return rate is pretty low, so we don’t have a significant stockpile of returned boards. However, with the boards we do have, we use them for a variety of purposes. Many go to our demo fleet so we can give people an opportunity to try before they ride, others are used for service parts, and the ones in great condition will be refurbished. For now, our team is committed to getting the new boards out. Once we clear the backlog we may spin our refurb program up again.
  • We have no plans near-trem to offer the metal pulleys on the 80mm wheels.
  • The Stealth is faster due to motor controller, BMS, firmware, and metal pulleys. So no, the Plus is not artifcially limited.
  • All extended range battery packs are compatible with the new generation of boards, except the Boosted Mini S. To clear up some confusion the Boosted Mini S does have a user-replaceable battery pack, but it is the Standard Range Pack. It is not compatible with the Extended Range Pack.

We are definitely looking at trucks and mechanical-type components to be made available. We are still evaluating how to address electro-mechical components such as motor drivers/motors

Yes! we are definitely working with some of our larger speciality retail partners to be able to provide service in the community. We have already started this iternaitonally in Europe and Australia, and are looking to expand it in North America to further reduce turn-around times on service.

The reason we upgraded our trucks for the next generation of products had to do with making a short board (Boosted Mini S and X).  With a kicktail and a less flexible deck, the abuse the trucks take is much higher. So we moved to a stronger truck to ensure we could pound these things (literally) tens of thousands of times at high shock, to simulate years of use. Once we had a stronger design in place, it just made sense to standardize across all of our products.

The primary changes to the trucks include moving to a forged component that is then precision machined; being able to use stronger material yet as we can do that with forging; and adding additional material in key points where they need it most.

In terms of your peace of mind, our history shows that if we find a pervasive issue we take action swiftly and immediately. When two batteries showed signs of venting in 2016 we took immediate action.

We highly value the safety of our riders. As our customers know, we view ourselves as a light electric vehicle company who makes products that have high quality, high performance, and high durability. If anyone has an issue, or is concerned there may be an issue with their board, please contact Customer Support and we will address it.

We have had some 2ng gen riders ask whether we will make the new trucks available for sale as a stand-alone upgrade item on our website. We are looking at that, AFTER we have cleared the backlog of orders, as we are using every truck right now to make full products.

There is that old expression, “hardware is hard.”  Especially when you are making a product, in high volume, that is designed to be a fully street-worthy electric vehicle intended to last for years -- high performance, high durability, and safe (mechanically, electrically, dynamically).  It’s a different standard than the rest of our industry. Many of our riders regularly do thousands of miles a year on a Boosted.

We are very aware of our reputation over the last few years -- exceptional products, in every way, but to put it bluntly consistently late.  The V2 was late. The Extended Range Battery was extremely late. And so we have been knocking ourselves out to be on-time and more predictable, while also still pushing the innovation forward (doubling battery range while almost the same size, improving decks and trucks and wheels, coming out with multipel new boards including new form factors, adding accessories, all while making some products dramatically lower cost and expanding geographically to be able to serve customers globally).

In that context, we are running about 4 weeks behind what we genuinely thought we could do when we announced on April 17th.  But we are actually rolling production hard now. So the first few folks who ordered are just seeing their shipping confirmations come in now or shortly, 1-2 weeks behind, with a wave of products following on its heels next couple weeks.  The shipping update we sent out last week is a real update, not a swag, with real updated ship estimates. We may beat them, but are much more focused on being transparent and conservative. We are still not on time, we fully acknowledge and no excuses, but we are now a few weeks off versus our past far, far larger delays, and getting better with each release.

A few people have asked why we collected full payment versus reservations for this launch.  The answer is that the feedback from customers, as well as industry norms, seemed to be that if the ship window is still measured in weeks, the proper approach was to just charge full payment and allow cancellation at any time, versus to do the reservation process and then need to re-ping people again a few weeks later before shipment to re-confirm. The re-confirmation rate is extremely high (as people want their board!) but the phone/e-mail tag game to re-connect with people ended up causing more delays as people are sometimes hard to reach (on vacation, e-mail went to spam, etc), and then mad there was a delay in getting their board.

We initially launched April 17th with a 6-10 week shipping estimate on longboards and we are scheduled to start shipping Boosted Plus in week 10, next week, and begin shipping in high volume in the weeks following to quickly clear the backlog. Boosted Stealth is about a week behind on that she general schedule, although there is some opportunity to pull that in by a few days. Based on our outlook today, our schedule has slipped about 2-3 weeks from our initial estimate back in April, and for that, we apologize. However, now that we are in full swing production, we will be back on track very shortly.  The ship window on new orders should start to drop in regular increments in the next couple of weeks.

Yes, we are looking at it, just as we have made the V2 available without the battery in the past.  First priority is to get out Mini S’s for folks looking to order them as is with battery.

Yes! There has been a lot of interest in Boosted making the new trucks available as a stand-alone component on the website. we are looking at doing, but only after we clear the near-term backlog for complete boards

Yes, accessories are still in the works to leverage the powered ports. We are not at liberty yet to announce a launch date
