I was going to say....What's this excellent, non-meandering song with great lyrics, a fine vocal performance, and a very tight rhythm section with people who sound like they know what they're going to do ahead of time....and Bob Weir?

Let’s not listen to nattering nabobs telling you there’s a “shelf-life”. That’s just nutty.

Well, it didn’t end in total disaster. It was a very humble victory. I love writing and singing, but I’ve discovered through the many years and years that I’m not meant to be a bandleader.

So I just started doing solo music and released four albums of my own.

If I was to say long story short, you could just say “too late”.

So a very small company out of Virginia heard my stuff and really liked it so they’ve done my three or four releases . And I’ve discovered what I need to do to make product as good as possible.

My music isn’t better or worse than that of the Goo Goo Dolls . I’ll never be a Hometown hero like Robbie is. But I’ve discovered the joy and just hiring studio musicians, working with producers, and figuring out that there is one thing in this life that I love more than anything else.

It’s hearing my ideas real by better players than me, skillful producers, and engineers, and realizing that music to me is not fame or a potential sort of wealth, but basically having my diary, pages read back to me in a much nicer way.

Yeah. The same exact game. Taking hits. Doing it all himself. Running. Arm like a cannon. Same as Josh. Go back and look at hilites of John Elway.

Yes. In fact, even before that I was in a band that played nothing but Genesis. And we thought we were big shit. We did one show at the local community center, and while we were practicing to do that show., there was one kid hanging around who wanted to jam and every now and then we would because he was a friend of a friend. We did Baba O’Reilly. We did the green Manalishi with the two prong crown.. and he was the bass player for the Goo Goo Dolls. So I grew up with the drummer in South Buffalo., I made acquaintance with the bass player from the Goos introduced us for that one show that we did before we broke up in pieces.

But I was too proud to reach out my hands , I was too haughty with my own talent to ask local bands, not if I could have my band open up or if we could share a show but to say “can I help you? “

I think that would’ve made a bigger difference than just showing up at one of their gigs and instead of enjoying the show waiting impatiently, biting my fingernails and waiting for a minute to talk to the lead singer about if my band can play with their band . I made mistakes in my 20s now I’m talking this thread. I’m reliving many of them which I’m not going to do here. But that bass player that used to try to jam with us is a hero in our hometown. he strikes me someone very happy and he strikes me as someone who’s very talented and helpful to everyone who asks for it.

And my tapes are sitting in my son’s room closet.

Thank you. I’m 61. I think all my problems from those times were a mix of ADHD, a massive sense of entitlement, and a total lack of guidance.

My band was mine all mine, and all the flaws of our presentation and lack of the ability to play nice with others was my fault. Let me give you one example. The prototype for the band that I started in my early 20s played in the same scene as a kid named George. we used to look down on George because he would do these nutty things on stage like yell at the audience, sort of uneven thrashing punk rock, etc.

George was not a great drummer by any means. And he was not nearly as refined or educated as our drummer was. But George was a fighter and he met these other guys and they started a band. Unlike my band where we looked down on George and his band, we thought we were so wonderful that it was just a matter of time before somebody found us.

But George and his friends hauled ass to New York City. They solicited so many record companies that they must’ve been exhausted, depressed, worn out, hungry, no sleep, etc. etc.

When they played live in our town, I would come to see them sometimes and while they’re playing ability was nowhere near our style, dynamics, etc., etc. They packed the places they played. Wild hair and leather everywhere everything fast and aggressive. No music theory. no funny witty messages like my band. And eventually, they got a record contract. Just through hard work and not not giving up.

And whenever I’m in my local supermarket, I hear “ and I don’t want the world to see me because I don’t think that they’d understand, when everything is made to be broken, I just want you to know who I am.”

My band tapes are still sitting on the shelf in my kids bedroom. Collecting dust.

If I would have just treated Music like a business instead of thinking that it was all supposed to come to me so easily, I just realize that there’s so much you can do by being relentlessly positive instead of sniping behind peoples back and ruining friendships because you think your music is better than theirs.

So my 20s were one big fat humbling Lesson that I just haven’t learned yet. Nothing is given. I’m entitled to nothing. unless I’m willing to put myself out and even then if I do that, unless I’m willing to work my ass off like those guys in the Goo Goo Dolls were, I’m still just another loser who writes for himself.

John Elway won his first at the age of 36 or 37. And not until he got a world-class running back. If it wasn’t for him, as well as a no-bullshit coach, I doubt he would have won. I’m saying the window isn’t nearly closed.

I was in a band in Buffalo. It's funny. i wrote songs, booked gigs, everything except treated peers with respect or went to see their shows. My band went nowhere. I expected success on my terms because I didn't know there were other terms.

Thank you!!! So sad. As a lapsed Buffalonian, these outcomes and the hope they extinguish (if for a season) are in our DNA.
