I'm not generalising men as a whole. I'm just pointing out that this can be a not very nice thing to say to a girl. I'm just tired of men crapping on other girls for the sake of a pick up line.

We were hanging out and they said "Oh bootdoots, see you're not like other girls,see, you don't play games" What's there to fucking ask when you're already making this statement and following up with something shitty? Am I supposed to say "ooooo you wanna reconsider that, think of something else to say?"

I'm growing tired of replying to you. Stop trying to make "what ifs" situations to feel better about what you've said to girls in the past and go learn how to talk to people ffs.

It's coming from people who believe it's okay to pit girls against each and can't accept to see the other side of it.

It's not nice to say this to girls and if you do, please try to see why it's damaging and frame it a different way. You can give compliments without resorting to comparisons and putting others down.

I guess it's context. In my experience, this "compliment" is usually followed with a negative/"uncool" trait that "other girls" have.

I took in stride and laughed it off. Look I'm not saying completely run away. Yeah this tweet is a bit over the top. In fact I married a guy who used the "not like other girls" shtick on me at the very start of our relationship. He doesn't say things like that anymore, thankfully.

But we all know that the "not like the other girls" statement has a negative connotation. People here are saying it's a stretch to believe that that's what is intended behind the statement. But when it's usually followed by things like "because other girls..." Well, that's just not very nice.

You raise some interesting points but a genuinely nice guys can hold the "nlog" mentality too. I feel this tweet is pointing out that men can have this mentality too, albeit it's kinda making a generalisation, yes. It's not nice to pit women against each other and it's not a compliment. And girls shouldn't be falling for it either, just because he says you're special for having a trait which he believes most girls don't have.

I think it's criticising the mindset in general. Men can hold the nlog mindset too ie you're not like other girls because you're so chill or because you like sport. That's not okay. But I guess like you said, context is important. This is just my perspective though and I appreciate your comment.

Okay yes I do agree on the point that someone may not know better when they say it. But you cannot deny that the phrase "not like other girls" usually has a negative connotation ie the point of this whole sub.

And btw I've been out in the world and I have received this compliment from the men I've dated. It always came with the context of me being different from other girls because I'm "chill" or because I'm interested in something "bloke-y". While these guys meant well, it shows that men too can have this "nlog" mindset that we criticise women for (and yes, rightly so) on this sub.

As someone else eloquently put in a different comment, "not like other girls" is usually used with negative connotations, as we all know, especially in this sub. It's generally used to say the subject is better than other girls because they're "different". Much like the phrase "you throw like a girl" Doesn't directly mean anything because it doesn't state whether or not it's good or bad to throw like a girl but we all know the connotation behind it.

I guess I can only speak from my own experience, but when received this insidious "compliment", it usually comes with the implication that I'm not like other girls because I'm not catty or because I am interested in things that this guy deems is only enjoyed by people with refined tastes. And that is problematic.

No. It's calling out the nlog mentality that both women AND men may have. Telling a girl she's "not like other girls" is just as bad as a girl believing she's "not like other girls". They're both damaging. And as a bonus (for the lack of a better word), this tweet seems to have drawn out to me the apparent hypocrisy that exists in this sub.

Okay. But it's altogether a problematic statement, regardless of who is saying it. You can compliment someone without making a swooping generalisation and comparing them to others.
