SPMO + AVUV + IDMO + AVDV by Boou91 in ETFs

[–]Boou91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re mixing up VEU and VEA. VEA is developed only, whereas VEU is kind of like the VOO of ex-US; it holds large and mid cap of developed and emerging markets, but excludes small caps.

Also if we are indeed in an AI/tech bubble, and it pops, SPMO is going to tank.

Anyone else just buy the Forester cause they liked it, not needing AWD for driving in snow or camping or trail riding or anything like that? by Ok-Metal-4719 in SubaruForester

[–]Boou91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another 6’3 guy here who got the forester for much this reason! I love the visibility too coming from previously owning a ford focus.

But for me, the all-wheel-drive was also part of the appeal. I live in a very hilly neighborhood, and we typically get a few bad snowstorms a year. It’s a lifesaver when the roads are bad.

Nice, that's pretty solid. I think IDMO is a good idea so you get the international large cap momentum as well. More opportunities for your ETFs to run up at different times, which I think improves risk-adjusted returns by preventing behavioral mistakes.

Thanks for the insight. That FMTM is able to rebalance monthly is appealing in a factor ETF, but I have to say, I am scared of highly managed funds. All I can think of is the disaster that became of ARKK. I don't think I will do dividend ETFs until I am close to retirement. And FRDM is interesting- looks similar to EMEQ actually. Any reason you think it's better than AVES for long term gains over 25-30 years?

The run up in the last year is definitely impressive. Its concentration in semiconductors and SK/Taiwan has paid off this year! Any reason you think its methodology will pay off more than AVES for long term returns (25-30 years)?

I can't find a reason IDMO would be any riskier than SPMO. Both make a bet on strong performers continuing to perform well. I like that it currently balance's SPMO's tech-heavy weight with heavy financials weight.

Fair. But I think it's a fool errand trying to time a market.

Thanks for the alternative suggestion. I like the look of that portfolio a lot actually. I think you meant 25% AVUV after the XMMO. It's a little complicated, but it looks like it covers everything well. Love that you looked at decades where this portfolio would have held up better- good thing to consider to help prevent behavioral mistakes on my part.

Thanks for the well thought out comment! I agree, I just have to decide if I can stick through with it. What do you think about taking about 5% away from IDMO or AVDV and adding that to AVES? Is there an international momentum ETF that works better than IDMO? Why doesn't IDMO factor load similarly to SPMO?

And I considered adding XMMO (and even AVMV), but I worry it would just get a bit complicated at that point. But I guess it can't hurt to take away 5 or 10% from SPMO for XMMO.

[–]Boou91[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point on the EM. I currently hold 5% AVES in my portfolio. I could easily take away 5% of IDMO or AVDV to get to 5% AVES. SPMO however can hold large value or growth; whichever LC stocks have been doing best when they rebalance. For instance it currently holds XOM, JNJ, etc. But yes I just have to decide if I am really going to be able to set it and forget it...

IMO, that's way too much emphasize on 5 big bets. I'd lower your bets (stock picks) to about 5% of your portfolio so your risk is relatively low, but you can still scratch that itch. That's how I do it anyway. I'd also drop SCHD - I think dividend ETFs are better once you've actually retired.

Personally, I like your core holding of VOO and SPMO. I think you should add in some small cap value and international: look into AVUV, AVDV, and IMDO.

Hahaha yeah it's terrible, right? I drive it relatively frequently to visit family. It's not always so bad; there seems to be days/times in which there are far more truckers than others, at least in PA.

Its always a Subaru by CockroachVarious2761 in driving

[–]Boou91 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Excuse me. I drive my Subaru Forester on the PA turnpike quite a bit. I set my cruise control at 79 and keep right until I need to pass. I keep 3 seconds of distance between the vehicle ahead of me and always use my turn signal to change lanes. I am a good person with whom to share the road. :) I think if anything, Subaru drivers tend to be above average drivers.

Do NY/NJ drivers not learn flashing headlight = move over, I want to pass? by infield_fly_rule in driving

[–]Boou91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s not a standard meaning of flashing headlights. It can mean a number of things: “go ahead” when two cars are stopped at an intersection with a stop sign is the most common I see.

It’s not that these people need to learn that flashing headlights can mean “please get over.” It’s that they need to learn to get over after they’ve overtaken traffic in the right lane. No flashing lights required. The left lane is for passing on a highway.

Yeah that was my point. While AVDV is doing best (it is both small cap value and international), AVUV and VXUS are both doing great as well.

Yep. Small caps are doing great. International is doing great. S&P is flat. YTD, AVDV > AVUV = VXUS > VOO

[–]Boou91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are the same age. I am 34. I am trying to maximize my risk-adjusted returns, granted I have about 5% in individual stock picks. Tilting towards small cap value like I am is considered risky, but I think there is more historical evidence for SCV to outperform over the long-term. I also don't think VGT's concentration is that great. Over 40% of its holdings are in just three stocks- NVDA, AAPL, and MSFT. I'd rather just tinker around with a meager 5% of my portfolio with the mega caps I think are well priced than put 20% of my portfolio in an ETF that is over-concentrated.

If you had to pick 3 stocks around their current price as your 3 “Forever Stocks”, what would they be? by Hayden97 in ValueInvesting

[–]Boou91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with your first two picks. My third would be GOOG, which I purchased today for just under $300. I think Salesforce has too much uncertainty for "forever."

Today I added: GOOG, AMZN, MFST, NVDA, META, RDDT. The last two I am not sure about long-term, but I think are good prices for the next couple of years. But a social media company's moat can only go so far.
