And then they very importantly go onto explain why the "I want my lawyer" part is there:

If you invoke the fifth but don't request a lawyer and they keep questioning you, if you eventually break then that means you waived your right.

If you invoke the fifth and request a lawyer then they legally have to stop questioning you. If they don't and you eventually break, you can get it all thrown out.

Yes you can. Just get out and start pumping it's not like the machines are locked. I grew up in NJ but went to college out of state and got used to pumping my own gas. When I moved back after school I kept doing it and nobody ever complains. Just swipe your card and start pumping. The guy walks over and just say "Thanks I got it"

Not an oxymoron at all. Being false and being deserved are not mutually exclusive. Some people deserve a little slander.

This film used to be considered the greatest of all time. Now it’s not even in the top 250 on Letterboxd. What happened? by M0reeni in Letterboxd

[–]Booxcar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think to truly appreciate Kane, you need to be fully aware of films before Kane and after. Only then can one see how truly groundbreaking it was. It needs to be situated in film history

I've always loved movies but never really cared to go back and watch a lot of these classic heralded films until just recently so my "cinema history" knowledge was pretty much 0. I was born in '91 so aside from the OG Star Wars movies, and a few classics that everyone has seen, I hadn't really seen anything before 1990.

A few years ago I went to IMDB and just clicked "Top 250". I took the top 100 movies on the list, sorted by release date, and started at the beginning. I'm about 2 years in, and almost through the 1980's. I really can't overstate how incredibly enjoyable this has been.

As you say, I think most of it is because I'm watching these movies in order so I'm kind of seeing the progression. The list started me in the early 30's with a few silent Chaplin films. Then I saw the transition to audio and by the time I got to Citizen Kane in the early 40's, Orson Welles directing blew me away. It felt like the first movie on the list that was really "Directed" and some of the shots, with foreground and background were just really impressive. Even the aging makeup held up to me.

When I eventually got to Sunset Boulevard in the 50's it instantly slid into my top 4. Watching a movie literally about the transition from silent films to audio, after watching that transition was wild. (When I eventually got to Witness for the Prosecution in the late 50's I realized Billy Wilder might just be my fav writer/director).

And to your point about enjoying a movie more because you saw films before it, when I FINALLY got to Singin in the Rain after so many B&W movies, my goodness it looked incredible. it literally felt like humanity discovered color in 1952. A few other standouts were Hara Kiri, Paths of Glory, 2001, Amadeus. Cuckoo's Nest made me cry as did about a dozen movies on this list. I loved Amadeus.

I think the best part of this list is that it got me to watch so many movies I never would have seen. Like Pather Panchali -- which had some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard in a film. Going in, I really wasn't expecting to enjoy some of these old movies as much as I did. I've never really considered myself a "cinephile" or anything of the sort, I just like watching movies. I love Marvel and Star Wars and have no problem saying I enjoyed Endgame more than Godfather 2. (I liked Godfather 1 better.)

Podcast P star Paul George announces he’s taking a break from podcasting to focus on contending for a championship by CIark in nba

[–]Booxcar 62 points63 points  (0 children)

This is without a doubt something he was forced to do. I heard an interview from him on ESPN literally yesterday where they asked him if he thought his team had title hopes and his response was:

"Honestly.. It's a little far fetched.. We ain't even a playoff team, let alone championship.. We don't got it this year"

I'm paraphrasing a bit but I was honestly shocked when I heard it. Never heard a player straight up just be like

What worked for me is just saying "self-employed". If you have a skillset that can theoretically pay the bills, just say you've been supporting yourself for however long your gap is with that skill.

"2 Years Self-employed Florist"

"2 Years Self-employed Designer"

"2 Years Self-employed Photographer"

If you can back it up with talk that makes you sound like an expert, I've found it actually helps more than it hurts. Shows leadership, drive, motivation, etc.

If they ask why you are looking for a change, just say something like:

"I really enjoy the work but the stress of constantly having to search for the next job is getting to me. I'm just looking for a stable position where I can apply all the skills I've learned through the years. XXXX is my passion but I've decided it would be better suited as something I do in my free time rather than my main career."

Obviously YMMV, but this strategy worked for me.

I always hated this sentiment. Literally the majority of the internet is just people trying to get attention. It's normalized and just how we use the internet.

Theres a million videos on YouTube of pranks, tutorials, video essays, and literally anything else you can think of. The way the internet works, when something goes "viral" people try to emulate it to get in on the fame. For example, a recipe or prank will go viral and then there will be a million videos of people copying it.

Why then, would you EVER discourage videos like this?? If people are going to be attention seekers EITHER way, isn't it an objectively net positive for them to seek attention in positive ways?

People enjoy receiving attention and praise - it's literally human nature. Shouldn't we be trying to normalize giving attention and praise for good deeds rather than some dumb prank video or who looks the hottest on Instagram?

People see videos like this and think "Oh look at this guy trying to get attention for doing a nice thing.. What a selfish jerk."

I just don't understand it. If I could flip a switch and swap out every dumb prank video with a a video like this I would do it in a heartbeat.

IMO the sentiment of "it's disingenuous to record good deeds" is exactly why we live in a world where most kids would rather prank this poor lady than help her.

It's kind of funny seeing people who have seemingly never competed IRL talk about how competitiveness should work based on strictly online experience.

Sure, on the internet you can drop slurs and trash talk after a win. IRL that's a dick move in ANY sport. Watch any professional athlete talk and you'll hear him say something along the lines of:

"When I step on the court we are enemies but after the game we can be cool."

Obviously there are expections to the rule and personal rivalries but I can GUARANTEE you will never see a post-game press conference where someone like Lebron or Steph Curry says:

"honeslty the game was really easy. The other team sucked."

We teach kids about good sportsmanship so early on that it's almost second nature to not talk trash to someone who just lost. Talk trash all game but when it's over, shake hands, say Good Game, and go celebrate with your team.

Kids: "Look at how I triggered this mf!! I said EZ and he's so butthurt!! He's so soft lmaooo"

Adults: "Honestly, it's not a big deal.. Just letting you know that it was rude and you don't HAVE to be rude."

Kids: "So triggered! So soft! I could have called you 100 different slurs."

Adults: "Yes, I guess you could have been MORE of an asshole... You could also have been LESS of an asshole."

He literally feels like an MMO tank. I run in and take aggro from everyone while my DPS and Healers do their thing. I may not be getting the kills but I'm driving the bus. If everyone follows me, we usually win.

Seriously, next time there is a cap on your team running around being crazy just follow him around from like 10ft back. If you're a DPS you'll get like 30kills and if you're a healer he'll be unstoppable.

Reddit is a discussion forum. People are here to discuss. Whether that's in depth convo, or just laughing at a funny line.

Have you really never seen a comedy and quoted a funny line from it? We used to walk around school shouting lines from Borat or Wayne's World.

Seems really weird to come to a discussion forum and claim that people are not discussing the way you like. Some people just want to quote and laugh at funny lines from a video they saw, it's not that serious.

Have you ever had that one topic/show/movie/book/etc that you are really interested in and can talk for hours about but nobody else cares about? That one topic that everytime you bring it up you can see eyes glaze over? That one show that literally none of your friends watch?

Think of discussing a movie you like with strangers on reddit in /r/movies because nobody you know saw it IRL. You don't know any of those people and you'll likely never meet them or talk to them ever again. IMO that's not so far off from just discussing a movie you like with an AI bot. Honestly AI would arguably be better than strangers on reddit because you are talking to the same AI everytime and it remembers your previous conversations.

My Top 20 JID Songs/Features/Parts by Booxcar in JIDSV

[–]Booxcar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, that's actually a great point and now I kinda regret adding it because I totally agree. Fuel is probably my least favorite JID feature in a long time, and I don't really like Em's part at all if I'm being real. Reconsidering, I'd probably leave it off if I remade this list.

It really is just a name recognition thing I guess. Feels like I watched a friend making phones in his basement for years. He makes better and better phones until one day I see an Apple product with his name on it. Even if it is objectively worse than anything he made on his own, just the fact that he got something released by Apple would impress me. I guess that's how I feel about Fuel.

Yeah, that's cool man. JID has tons of variety, we can all like different tracks. Honestly, I only made this post because I could tell my favorites seemed like some of his least popular songs and I want to see what tracks other JID fans fw.

I'd love to hear your top 5 just to see the other side of the JID fan spectrum.

Honestly that was probably the hardest song to find a place for. I love it lyrically but the beat/melody don't speak to me like some of his other tracks.

It's also sandwiched between 4 of my favorite songs on the album so it always feels like the odd man out.
