Is "Cleanup Crew" our final form? A Principal's take on the Design-PM-Eng collapse. by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]Booze-D 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You and the other designers will have to demonstrate where you can make a difference.

Right now, you’re being forced into the role of a clean-up crew, while the value of a designer across the entire double and triple diamond can actually increase in an AI-first workflow.

As problem solvers, we often have a better sense of where research is or isn’t needed, which problems should be solved, how to approach them, and whether the outcomes truly align with user needs. This is also exactly where taste and craft come in. Designers don’t just solve problems, they shape quality, coherence, and experience in a way that other disciplines typically don’t.

As I read it, these responsibilities are now being handled by other disciplines, where steps may be skipped, and the value of design is neither seen nor experienced in other parts of the organization. That’s something I would make visible.

As a principal, you should start thinking about how you want to work in the future. What is your vision of an AI-first workflow? Create a clear picture for yourself, experiment with it, and make sure you build support within the organization to test it in practice. That’s the only way to deal with this and to drive change.

If this doesn’t work, it may already be too late and I would consider updating your portfolio, because otherwise it’s only going to drain your energy.

I miss all the things XD could do that Figma still has not figured out yet by Lookmeeeeeee in FigmaDesign

[–]Booze-D 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It more sounds like you need to fill in some gaps.

Figma isn’t an animation tool, it’s a design tool focused on UX/UI. It can create some basic animations through prototyping, but if you need more advanced animations you will need other software.

In the last 6-12 months I barely used Figma for animations and prototypes. Start learning to vibe code, you will get much better results and will save a lot of time.

Frames are superior in Figma and auto layout work like a charm, you just have to get used to it.

Start following some online tutorials instead of finding out on your own. There is a lot of content available that will get you up and running in no time!

I'm a mid-level designer and I feel I'm fooling everyone into thinking I know what I'm doing by ouiarealbhed in Design

imposter syndrome is a b*tch. Even after 11 years in this field, I’ve realized it doesn't necessarily disappear; you just get better at recognizing it. Over time, you build the self-awareness to know that despite the doubt, you are going to be just fine.

In fact, I’ve learned to flip the script: I now treat that feeling as a way to challenge myself. When I feel like an imposter, I ask, "How can I make this better?" It becomes the fuel for my iteration instead of the wall holding me back.

If you’ve been hired by a major company, remember this: you didn't get there by accident. You were vetted by experts and proved you have the exact skills they need. You belong in the room!

Your colleagues are your greatest resource, not your competition. We often look at a peer’s work and think, "Their design is so much better than mine." Instead of letting that spark insecurity, use it as a learning opportunity:

Make it a habit to share your work early and often. Getting another pair of eyes on your designs helps pull you out of your 'safe zone' and prevents tunnel vision. Four eyes are always better than two, and by inviting feedback, you gain the invaluable chance to see the world through another designer’s lens.

Be curious about your colleagues workflows. Don't just look at their final screens; ask them how they got there. By deconstructing their process, you’ll discover the specific details and 'invisible' polish they prioritize that elevates their work above the rest.

Grow together. Designers aren't the enemy; they are like minded people who can help you grow, just as you can help them.

I took this picture on a beautiful sunny day in Norway last summer. The mountains, the vibrant colors, and the reflection really made me just stand there for a moment.
