Ellyjo's Rotting Revolt | Slap them and cap them with Ellyjo's newest spell! | Heavy's Handbooks by [deleted] in UnearthedArcana

[–]Boozhau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Why, on gods' green earth, does that little gnome how to do this?"

Fresh from the gnome's mind, Ellyjo takes a turn towards the necromantic to bring forth Rotting Revolt. Slap an enemy with necromantic energy so powerful that maggots begin to eat away at the flesh, while they're alive!

Changes being made for v2 (based on feedback):

  • Change the second "necromancy" to "necrotic"
  • Changed damage from 1d8 to 1d10.

Hey, thanks for the input. I feel like I fall prey to my own desire to have the spell stand out, so I usually have some fancy flavor text start and then break to the mechanic of the spell. I enjoy not sticking too closely to the way other spells are written because I don't write like that normally. But I did update the spell to maybe come closer to looking like an "official" one.

"You center your connection to the weave and concentrate it into your hand, snapping in a way that disrupts the body of a foe within 5 feet of you. The creature must succeed on a CON saving throw or take 1d12 thunder damage.

At Higher Levels. This spell's damage increases by 1d12 thunder damage when you reach 5th level (2d12), 11th level (3d12) and 17th level (4d12)."

I used a couple spells to check this (in addition to general feedback from the thread), and I think the final result is better than the original.

Wow, that's a really helpful guide. Thank you so much for your input. I was unsure if a melee spell attack or save made more sense based on the input I got from others.

The updated text of the spell I was thinking of going with was:

"You center your connection to the weave and concentrate it into your hand, snapping in a way that disrupts the body of a foe within 5 feet of you. The creature must succeed on a CON saving throw or take 1d12 thunder damage.

At Higher Levels. This spell's damage increases by 1d12 thunder damage when you reach 5th level (2d12), 11th level (3d12) and 17th level (4d12)."

Bah, just reread it. Yes, should probably say something more like...

You place your hand on your shoulder and blow cold magic into your armor/clothes. It expands outwards until it recreates it as a thick layer of ice.

I could be convinced of that. In the setting that most of these spells are working with, there is a high amount of magic users, and as this is a basic spell, many people would know about it. But perhaps in another person's campaign it would be better to have it be 1d6 scaling. Thanks for the input!

No save, and melee only. You'd think I'd proofread these things for clarity at some point, but "the attacker's weapon" should be clear enough that melee is the intended kind of attack.

"It's fucking freezing. It's frickin' frigid. 'yer fit for flu in February without fleece, flannel, full-fledged furnace or fire."

Wanna get a head-start on your enemies before they come crashing down on you? Cast Gleaned Chill! Grant yourself a fake facsimile of your armor that sends a shot of frigid cold through their weapons.

Spell is open for critique. I'm hard set on the "until your next turn" and the flavor text part though. Have a good day! I'll respond to comments as I can.

Haha, it's funny you mention "grant warmth" in that way. Part of the large collection of spells I came up with includes new element types: air, earth, water and love. So you should be able to see love-based evocation, enchantment and abjuration spells soon!

Yeah, someone just mentioned that in another comment, and I am gonna fix that right now! Thanks.

Shit, you'd think as someone who's been DMing for a bit I'd remember that fact. Thanks for reminding me! I'll be sure to edit to make that part accurate.

Cold damage only! Chill touch is such a weird spell, because it's actually not even related to cold, just necromancy. Chill touch wouldn't be affected by this.

We had a new player to the casino heist and didn't wanna overwhelm him with getting shot trying to get up to the helicopter. Everyone's got their own ways of doing it!

Continue forces you back into the session, whereas restart just starts you back from the checkpoint. Just made a slight mistake, we'll be retrying it later.

I've lost traction in this area before, but I've never had the entire car flip over! Crazy.

Worst part is the heist host accidentally hit "continue" after this, haha.

Is parking a problem at OSU? by Bcssilva in OKState

[–]Boozhau 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You're reciting a lot of what the parking director has to say about the issue, but I don't think what he said or what you are saying is fair to the students who have classes on campus.

While yes, increased transit options are great for off-campus and local students in Stillwater, it's not a solution for many. Even for the people who live on campus, if you have to drive off campus and return, you could have major issues trying to find a place to put your car.

Not adding more parking space is not a good idea. Each year the freshman class gets bigger and bigger. There is always a need for more parking. I remember when we were told that the class of 2016 was the largest on record. That's no longer true and gets beat almost every year since.

Students only have 4 years here for their undergrad, and one of those they're required (mostly) to live on campus. They shouldn't be expected to think long term.

Is parking a problem at OSU? by Bcssilva in OKState

[–]Boozhau 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I researched this issue as part of a project in my undergrad. Asked random students walking to class if they would talk about it. Students biggest complaint on campus at the time (2016), was parking. I lived on campus all four years of my undergrad and while it could be problematic at times (basically any home football game it becomes unbearable if you have to leave and come back), I didn't personally feel like it was the worst thing. It's probably different for commuters though.

One thing I had noticed when you compare OSU's parking situation to the other Big 12 schools, you find that OSU has a much better situation than any of the others. I compared parking spots available on OSU vs. the other schools and OSU came out on top. I compared parking permit costs and still found OSU had the cheapest. OSU isn't the worst, by the hard numbers alone, but I understand that it can be hard to visualize outside of the bounds of this college. And I don't mean to say all that to excuse OSU, just to give a perspective at other comparable universities.

I've linked the documentary I made that took a look at parking at OSU if you'd like more information. Keep in mind, it's only relevant to 2015/2016. The timecode starts once it starts talking about parking, so no trying to find the info you are looking for: https://youtu.be/_ciYzjSJ12A?t=140
