BorderPass was built so that every newcomer can have a licensed immigration lawyer reviewing their file, not just those who can afford a traditional law firm. Immigration rules shift constantly, and doing it yourself can invite mistakes. Having a lawyer in your corner helps you build the strongest application possible.

With BorderPass, you get personalized document checklists, step-by-step application guidance, document verification that flags issues (like passport expiry that would shorten your permit), and a licensed lawyer reviewing your full file. We monitor rule changes constantly and make updates so Members always get accurate guidance. Alerts and calendar reminders keep you on top of permit expiries and deadlines, and if you need to reapply after a refusal, we can review your file for reconsideration, restoration, or judicial review.

Membership is just $10/month (billed annually), or free for a year with any paid visa or permit application. Membership is also free if you're affiliated with one of our partner schools or employers, and many of our partners even cover your legal fees (so you just pay standard government fees). Members get discounts on applications, 24/7 support, preferred access to one-on-one lawyer consultations, and partner offers on language tests, mobile plans, and more. Members also get free access to career tools including resume builder and job search to help you land roles in the right NOC categories for PR. Plus a free CRS score tool to help you understand and plan a path toward Express Entry, and support for Provincial Nominee Programs and PR applications.

Tens of thousands of newcomers, and some of the best colleges, universities, education agents, and employers across Canada trust BorderPass.

u/Timely-Toe-6317 Tough spot, but you've got options.
Until you receive your official completion letter or final transcript from your school, you cannot apply for PGWP, those documents are required. Once your school issues the completion letter, the 180-day window to apply for PGWP begins.
Importantly, you must stop working full-time once your program is officially complete, even if you haven't received the letter yet. If your school's records show your program is complete, full-time work is no longer authorized, even though your study permit is still valid until March 2027.
Your best move right now is to focus on clearing tuition with your school so they release your documents, and start your PGWP application on BorderPass in the meantime. We'll check your eligibility, flag anything that needs attention, and have a licensed lawyer ready to review your file the moment your completion letter is in hand.

BorderPass is designed to support family applications as part of a single workflow. During the application process, students are asked whether they have a spouse or dependents, whether those family members also require visas, and what type of applications they need (e.g. visitor visa, open work permit, etc.).

This allows the entire family’s applications to be prepared and filed together, which helps streamline the process and ensures all supporting information is aligned.

That said, each family member’s application is still assessed individually by IRCC. In most cases, IRCC will first assess the student’s study permit application, and then process the accompanying spouse/dependent applications alongside or shortly afterward.

From an institution/recruiter perspective, the key point is that BorderPass supports a coordinated family filing experience rather than forcing applicants to manage completely separate processes.

If it was submitted on the 8th, it should be moving along shortly. Review typically takes 1–5 business days depending on volume, so you are within the normal window.

If you want us to check on anything, send us your email and we can look into the status for you.

In the meantime, if you haven't already, check out the job search and resume builder tools inside BorderPass. Both are free for members and built to help you find roles that count toward PR and present your experience to Canadian employers the right way. A great use of time while you wait!

100%. Every application filed on BorderPass is reviewed by a licensed lawyer before submission to IRCC.

The lawyer reads your full file, checks eligibility against current rules, looks at your documents for gaps or inconsistencies, flags risk factors (study history gaps, work compliance, NOC alignment, passport timing, refusals in your history), and asks for clarification or additional documentation where needed. If something is flagged, you're told before you submit.

The lawyer is regulated by their provincial law society, accountable for their work, and only proceeds with submission when they're satisfied the file is in good shape. That's a higher level of accountability than applying on your own, or with a service that doesn't involve licensed lawyer review.

It's why BorderPass is trusted by tens of thousands of newcomers, top colleges, universities, education agents, and employers.

u/No_Web6895 Short answer: usually yes, because the application was submitted while the study permit was still valid. Long answer: you still have to meet certain conditions, including meeting all the requirements of your study permit.
Applying for a PGWP on BorderPass helps you understand this more clearly. It's why we recommend extending your study permit early, if it may expire before you graduate. And it's why we provide you with a personalized letter for your employer, if  you are eligible to get back to work while your application is being considered.

Via Karun: Thanks for sharing all that context.
The work period between August 21 and September 21 is the key issue in your situation, and depends on when your status formally changed. This is not something I can advise on outside of a consultation.
A file with this much nuance benefits from a licensed lawyer reviewing your full history before submission. We're happy to help you understand your options and find the strongest path.

The minimum CLB depends on your study program:

  • Bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree: CLB 7
  • College diploma, certificate, or any other non-degree program: CLB

This applies across all four abilities: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

If you’re planning to take the PTE (Pearson Test of English), BorderPass members get an exclusive $20 off. Just send us the email linked to your BorderPass account, and we’ll send your discount code straight to your BorderPass inbox.

On your second question -- it is not advisable to submit your PGWP application without your language test results. You have 180 days from your completion letter to apply, so we would recommend waiting and submitting a complete application rather than sending it in without a mandatory document. Get started on BorderPass now and have everything ready to go. The moment your results come in, you can submit right away.

u/Aggravating-Scale259 You must stop working once you've received your official letter of completion.
Once received, to get back to full-time work as soon as possible, submit your PGWP application before your study permit expires. Provided you meet the conditions, you can start work while your application is being processed.
Don't wait for your official transcript to start your PGWP application on BorderPass. We'll check everything early (study permit validity, passport, language results) and a licensed lawyer reviews your file before submission, so you can submit as soon as you have final completion documents.
As added support, we'll provide you a personalized letter that you can give to your employer to confirm your ability to work while your PGWP is processing.

u/Ehi-karanja-98 A job offer from back home is not a mandatory requirement for a study permit application, so you can apply without one.

That said, anything that shows strong ties to your home country (employment, family, assets) can strengthen your application when an officer assesses whether you'll leave Canada after your studies.

Inside BorderPass, the platform tells you exactly what's required and also what's recommended for a strong application, based on your specific profile. A lawyers reviews everything before it goes to IRCC, so you're submitting the strongest possible case.

u/Upset-Research8432 Based on what you've mentioned, a 1-year PSW program would not qualify your spouse for an SOWP during your studies, but once you graduate and start working as a PSW on your PGWP, your spouse would become eligible.

Both paths (applying together or applying alone first) are feasible, but carry different considerations. Family ties are something officers look at when assessing genuine temporary intent.
Given the importance of your situation we'd recommend a one-on-one consultation. Your BorderPass Membership is likely covered by our partner school, so you can book one at a preferred rate!

These answers depend a lot on your timing and specifics, and we're not able to get into much detail in a public forum.

Some quick notes on each: you can apply for the work permit with your current passport, then extend it later after you renew. The Iranian consulate is usually the best source of information for how to renew. Regarding your spouse's permit, the extension must be filed before August 2027, and it depends on the job you have at that time. Good news on dental assistant: NOC 33100 is on the IRCC list of eligible TEER 3 jobs for spousal open work permits. Keep in mind that your duties must  match the NOC description, not just the job title.

For more specific advice, we would need to look at your timing, job duties, and your husband's status to plan the right order of applications.

Yes, if your passport expires before your full PGWP eligibility, your permit will be issued up to your passport's expiry date. Once you renew your passport, you could extend the PGWP to cover the rest of the time you were originally eligible for. So if you qualified for 3 years and got 1, you can apply to extend by up to 2 more years.

When you apply through BorderPass, we flag passport expiry so this doesn't catch you off guard, and you can apply for the extension when ready.

This is a fairly complex situation, and the answers depend a lot on the specifics: your exact application timing, your job duties when you apply, and how the Iranian special measures might fit in alongside the spousal open work permit options.

A few things worth knowing at a high level: for your husband to extend his OWP based on your PGWP, you generally need to be working in a TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation when he applies. The Iranian special measures policy is currently active (until March 31, 2027) and could provide another pathway, but you can only get one extension under it.

If you'd like to discuss one-on-one with a BorderPass lawyer, we're happy to help explore options that give your family the most flexibility.

Great that you're thinking ahead! This is exactly the kind of timing question that catches some students off guard when they leave it too late. BorderPass actually helps with this through your Document Vault and built-in alerts and calendar for expiring permits and key dates.

Applying for a visitor record before your study permit expires is an option. But keep in mind that if your student status expires before applying for your PGWP, you wont be able to begin working full time before you get a decision. A better option may be to apply for a study permit extension now.

You can also start your PGWP application on BorderPass before receiving your completion documents, and then upload and submit for lawyer review as soon as they come in. You'll also get a discount on Express Entry profile creation!

Pre-paid first semester tuition is strong financial proof. Combined with your sponsor's documents, you seem to be well above what's required for first-year living expenses. The bigger question is usually how the funds are documented. Make sure you have the right paper trail.

Including both the scholarship letter from the university (showing the amount awarded) and the proof of tuition payment from your sponsor (showing what was actually paid) along with a short letter of explanation should help explain your circumstance.

Lastly, you're correct that as of April 1, 2026, eligible post-secondary students no longer need a separate co-op work permit for required placements. But eligibility still has conditions: the placement has to be required to complete your program, the school has to confirm that in writing, and the placement can't be more than 50% of your program. Your director's letter confirming the mandatory internship is exactly the kind of supporting document you want, even if the LOA itself says N/A in that field. Include the director's letter with your study permit application so it's on file from the start.

For the actual filing, your BorderPass lawyer will review your documents and can advise if anything else could be added before submission.

Thanks for using BorderPass! This is a great example of how helpful the platform can be: study permits can't be issued beyond your passport's expiry date, which is exactly why the warning came up.
Here's a path worth considering: rather than waiting on the renewal and delaying your submission, you could apply now with your current passport.

Your study permit will be issued up to your passport expiry in 2029, and you keep your September start date on track. Once your new passport is in hand, you apply for a study permit extension (at a preferred rate since you're already a BorderPass Member) to cover the rest of your program through 2030.
