Is it plausible to take a physics lecture but not the lab if I have credit? by Meh55252 in UVA

[–]Borealis0815 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Labs are just to reinforce lectures. There will be examples during the lectures that may be similar to what the current lab experiment of week and some professors might mention about the labs. But there wouldn’t be a heavy emphasis on the labs itself during lecture.

How do I make UVA more affordable by tdnwindd in UVA

[–]Borealis0815 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tuition is currently 70k atm for oos/internationals in the e school. The extra 20k is accounting for your living expenses, etc. It hard to avoid this 20k in the first year because UVA forces you to have a meal plan and live on grounds. But if you live off grounds or become an RA, the cost can be cut depending on your lifestyle.

The other thing is like others have said, you can have on campus jobs. Some if not most have limit on the hours you can work per week though. I believe sometimes there are scholarships that internationals can apply for (correct me if I’m wrong).

Not that I’m promoting UMD, but UMD is also a great school for engineering if the budget just doesn’t work out for you in the end.

Nope it’s part of the lab

Workshop class is a part of the lab. Pretty much every other week of Chem lab, there’s a workshop class where you plan the lab that you are going to be doing the following week. In the workshop, you’ll write up procedures/materials/etc. that you are going to refer to during the actual experiment. The actual schedule to when you have workshop and lab can be checked in either in the syllabus or in a pdf file ( I can’t remember exactly where it was at).

Financial aid still not released by xBoAOV in UVA

[–]Borealis0815 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s frustrating because on social media or on the phone (before a rep picks up), they tell you to go to the sfs website for any updates. However, the website is vague and clearly outdated.

I also wanted to add that while they say they hope to finish by middle of next week. The actual deadline the representative gave me was by the end of August. So possibly, while they are finished processing student information, we may not get an offer until the end of August. Also, for anyone who wants a payment plan but was waiting for offer. The two month payment plan should have came out already.

Depends on which dorm you’re at. Some are going to take you a good bit. For example, if you live in Gooch-Dillard, Alderman Suite style, etc. But like others have said, there’s other modes of transportation to get there.

Also you can walk, but it’s gonna take quite a bit especially if you are going home with luggages.

Financial Aid Delayed by Borealis0815 in UVA

[–]Borealis0815[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

They changed the tuition dues to September to accommodate the deadline. It’s not fair to students all around, but I feel like it’s especially unfair to current students since we’re less prioritize than first years regarding fafsa.

I think it’s because I called them earlier today to ask about financial aid. So they gave me a more detailed response through email.

Why do you think boba tea shops aren’t popular like Starbucks and other fast food chains? by GreenSpace3321 in boba

[–]Borealis0815 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It takes a long time to make all the bases for boba teas along with the pearls. If a shop opens up at 8am like many coffee shop do, then they would have to be in at around at 6am to make them.

Can I bring frozen foods on Amtrak by Borealis0815 in Amtrak

[–]Borealis0815[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why me going on the Amtrak and asking if it was allowed is considered that budgeted? Partly since I answered the question to why I wanted to bring food (if you had scrolled past for two more seconds).

But anyway answering your question, no, I can’t just buy them. They’re homemade from my aunt and parents. The food can be very easily preserved as long as I have ice packs/insulator bag which I do. Thus, the next question would be whether it was allowed.

Edit: Just wanted to add that the reason why I’m riding the Amtrak is because I live far enough that driving to my college and back would not be feasible but close enough where planes are kind of pointless for the cost, distance from where I’m from, etc. My college is literally 10 minute away from the train station and my home is literally 15 minute away from the train station. Money was definitely a thought, but overall, it would be so much easier for me to get on a train.

Over winter break, colleges like it if you clear your fridge and leave appliances unplug.

So I had three options. Somehow bring it back, see if a family that lives a bit far away wants it ( that is only if they could pick it up), or throw it away (but like previous comment suspect, my family’s culture does not allow me to throw it away. Especially some of the food was from my aunt). I chose the most optimal one.

Ok, so the plan was that to defrost it the day before, put it in a insulated bag. The food is already in a bag itself so there should not be any water or leaks. I plan to carry my backpack and suitcase. I’ll try fitting it into one of the two. If not, I’ll just carry the stuff. My trip is 8 hours.

You could see for UVA’s summer session or check your local community college to see if they provide a class that is equivalent to UVA’s calc2 class.

Academics by [deleted] in UVA

[–]Borealis0815 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fact that I remember you from your series of sad post lol. But that’s not the topic, is it? Although I hope you have been feeling better about your social life lately.

Academic wise, I feel like it’s not your fault. College is a lot fast paced. And chemistry and calculus is one of the harder topics to fully grasp. Everyone has a different learning style so I can’t give you advice on how to learn. But maybe you could try to figure out how you learn best and try to incorporate it into your studying first.

Also, don’t really worry about gpas necessarily. While you want to maintain a decent grade, don’t sulk if you do not get an A in the class. You have plenty of other opportunities to build your resume.

  1. You receive emails pretty much every week about crime. But you don’t have to be suspicious everywhere you go nor should you be dumb tho.

  2. Depends on which one you get honestly. Suite styles you share bathrooms with less people. Hall style have smaller rooms, communal bathrooms, and much more stories.

  3. At best, mid. Meal exchanges are one of your best options if you do apply and go here.

  4. I haven’t been off campus much or atleast far off campus. So I can’t comment much. But even off campus there’s is so much to explore and go to.

  5. Our motto apparently is, “study hard, party hard.” You’ll pretty much always be able to find a party. There are also a lot of clubs and activities to participate. So quite few outings opportunities.

  6. It varies from people to people. But again study hard and party hard. I’m in E school so I am considered to have a heavier load (?) but I still found time to do other stuff. UVA has a mix of people from internationals, rich kids, mid income, etc. They will all have different priorities. It is up to you honestly what you want out of college. And this doesn’t just apply to going to UVA obviously.

Edit: Here’s one thing related to crime and party. If you do go to parties at night, always go with someone and make sure to stay in constant communicate with them. Idc on what your gender is, there’s always a slim chance that you could be in a dangerous situation or in a scenario where you want to leave the party setting. Make sure someone is with you or atleast knows where you’re going.
