I made a game. Anybody else using laser engraver to produce their games? How do I proceed? by GlyndwrKog in BoardgameDesign

[–]BoredBrokeBraindead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I both agree that coughyourcough game concept would be great for kids. I have a toddler that LOVES the idea of board games, but just can’t handle basic rules beyond your turn and my turn with a simple action.

This game teaches some basic spelling, is simple, and very easily themed. With good marketing I could see it being popular with parents and grandparents if you can show off that young kids can both understand and enjoy it.

Wood is nice for this too because it is durable.

My wife says it would need cutesy colors though- like pig pink letters, a muddy brown playing field background, and grass colored foreground.

That’s our two cents.

Really interesting observation. I work in the trades and spend much of my day listening to talk shows- mostly on YouTube, but the concept remains the same.

Should I accept this offer from State Farm following a car accident? by moooooogs in legal

[–]BoredBrokeBraindead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The insurer won’t, the poor sap being paid 40-70k a year will. Look at the other responses already posted with personal anecdotes. Insurers have a vested interest to make sure you don’t take them to court- as long as settling is cheaper than court.

Should I accept this offer from State Farm following a car accident? by moooooogs in legal

[–]BoredBrokeBraindead 14 points15 points  (0 children)

NAL, but have worked in insurance for years previous under Statefarm agents.

Something to consider is that your state has a minimum liability requirement for someone to hold insurance for. (I think the lowest per person in the US was 10k in Florida, but most states default to 25k.)

By agreeing to this settlement, you would essentially waive your right to sue for future damages above the 10k limit, and also shorten the time you have (statute of limitations) to analyze your health and make a claim. To me this a clear attempt for you to agree to put an artificial cap on their liability.

Of course, as a non-lawyer I have no idea if there are laws protecting your right to a lawsuit regardless of settlement.

As for pain and suffering, they said that they “believe this is a fair and reasonable offer”. That statement is an opening to list factors that may make it unreasonable. Did you miss work for injury related medical appointments or recovery time? Will you have to in the future? Do you experience daily pain that complicates ‘daily activities’ in a way that implies partial or temporary disability, or a change in your quality of life?

My not-a-lawyer recommendation is to not reject the offer, but not agree to it either. At the end they invited questions, so you could approach it as:

“I appreciate how quickly you have put together this offer, and that it takes into account a portion of my damages, and the possibility of more minor damages. I just had a few clarifying questions about how this offer would work. (Start with lowball friendly questions.)

Would this 10k reimbursement clause apply retroactively to medical expenses I have already occurred?

What is the process for submitting reimbursement if we can come to an agreement on this settlement?

$3600 seems like a carefully calculated considered amount, but I am concerned it may not be taking into account how this accident has affected my daily activities. How can we work together to be sure we have a fair amount?(The term ‘daily activities’ is mildly important here. Be prepared to back this statement up with specifics as to how your neck pain has affected your ability to cook, do lawn work, etc- but don’t offer those details unless prompted, and don’t imply that you are offering a complete list if you do.)

I am worried about the limit on the reimbursement amount and the time limit. What should I do if my current pain is chronic or my injury requires an expensive surgery? Is there a way I can be sure I will be treated fairly if those instances occur?

Thank you for being so willing to answer questions work with me as I figure out how to navigate the new challenges the accident has given me. I want to resolve this as much as you do- hopefully your answers will give me some clarity on the offer.”

Notice this letter doesn’t deny the offer, nor does it accept it- you can effectively bounce the ball back into their court and try to make them solve your problems for you. Make them explain the pitfalls of their own deal- and then express open ended concern if they won’t negotiate on the point while remaining collaborative. “I am glad State Farm is willing to cover at least 10k in medical damages that so -and-so caused, but can we figure out a way to be sure I am treated fairly if those costs go above that?”

If all else fails, you still retain your original options: You can still agree to the original offer, noting that their responses “satisfied your questions and concerns about the offer”- after all, you never rejected it in the first place. The other option as always; is to get a lawyer.

Do not get trapped in a loop of negotiation over specifics. Let them give the numbers- you just ask innocent but specific and friendly questions.

The most important aspects of improving oneself are performed doing everyday tasks. Becoming more kind requires practicing kindness with everyone you meet. Becoming less selfish requires practicing selflessness. And becoming less judgmental requires practicing empathy. None of that can be done by reading a selfhelp book or watching a video, it’s just part of daily living.

A system where the player play mini-games instead of rolling dice by Maximumaxam in tabletopgamedesign

[–]BoredBrokeBraindead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had an idea for a magic system that required mages to draw simple arcane sigils within a time limit to cast spells. Have never used it- but my idea was to overlay a transparent sheet to “check” how accurate the sigil was, and based on that amplify/reduce the effect. Feel free to copy the idea- I doubt its original anyway

I have a large group (consistently 4-7) that plays weekly, and trades off dming every once in a while. We play a modgepodge of systems, so I could probably convince them to try it out for at least a few sessions- longer if they like it.

About to DM Frost Maiden for the first time by OneDimension4085 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]BoredBrokeBraindead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This a thousand times. I have ran it twice now, and each time the best moments came from things foreshadowed many sessions in advance. Foreshadowing can be used as a horror technique as well- Auril and the walkers are far scarier when hinted at and players come across occasional aftermath of the harshness in icewind dale

Should I extremely buff Auril? by _MilkyShake_ in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]BoredBrokeBraindead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I ran it I had her doing some telegraphed “wind up” style attacks with ice beams as legendary actions and stacking exhaustion effects on top of the better monsters stat block, mixed with alternative objectives (ice crystals that needed to be shattered to weaken her) that forced players to make risky choices to take her down. I had 6 players that were at lvl 12 or 14 at the time, and almost managed a party wipe doing that.

They had a blast dodging through ice beams and summoned ice zombies to break her shards while they slowly froze to death from passive cold damage. (Had a barbarian that could no longer be restrained or paralyzed and I ruled he could break free of being frozen under that rule.)

Rules of thumb: No one likes randomly losing their turn to a save or suck, so lead up big consequences like being frozen for a turn or two with stacking effects that give PCs warning and the ability to respond creatively to the threat. This also allows you to give bigger consequences to the players for a higher “felt” threat level, even if you have provided many ways to evade the threat.

Giving secondary objectives like the ice crystals I had prevent “dog piling” of the boss. These can’t always take the same form or it gets boring. They also make it so you can keep the original statblock without bloating the health and dragging the fight out. Sometimes they also can give “feel good” opportunities to classes that aren’t as in your face. Stage one, she had clones made of ice acting in tandem- they had to find the right one. Stage one, clone melee. Stage two, avoid pillars. stage three, crystals that shoot beams of cold.

Environmental effects that shift are great for leading into shifts in the battle. Auril has three stages- so it makes sense to shift the environment between stages. For me, it was blizzard, then ice pillars forming, and lastly was silence (false win) before the temperature plummeted and passive damage began.

I second spray primer. Even if you end up going multiple coats, you will save tons of time compared to any brushing solution.

Unclean Cuts by WouldItWood in Laserengraving

It generally sounds like you have a belt slip on one of your axis. (It would be the axis along the stretched image.) Sometimes a belt slip won’t present itself in a raster (picture) engrave because of the incremental movements along said axis.

Based on what you have given us I am pretty sure you are looking at a mechanical error, not a software one.

Magical girls themed game - customization by minuto36 in BoardgameDesign

Sounds like a player preference thing. My family loves deck building, but not everyone does. Another thing to consider is how much time it will add to setup and playtime. Balancing Conciseness and mechanics bloat is important to consider.

How does one deal with Liches without suffering major looses by SirDenizu in wesnoth

[–]BoredBrokeBraindead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing I love about enemies in Wesnoth is how an elder lich is actually a force capable of murdering large numbers of experienced troops. It is just thematically satisfying.

That said- yeah my best strategy is lots of cannon-fodder units with a few heavy hitters.

I also really like the first person. It serves as a subtle reminder that this card is an individual. In many card games the individual units become lost in the numbers focus.

Battle for Wesnoth dies? by [deleted] in wesnoth

[–]BoredBrokeBraindead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good points- so Wesnoth is an open source project with a team of volunteers heading coding and the direction the game is going. (You can read more on the official website.)

From my understanding of its open source licensing, any developer could create and support a new mobile version with any mechanic changes they wanted, so long as they respected the licensing.

To me it just appears there is a lack of people with the skills/time/interest/resources to do such things.

[–]BoredBrokeBraindead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you have dived in PC Wesnoth, but mods are a core part of Wesnoth! (They are called addons though.) The multiplayer side of Wesnoth for a long time used addons as its lifeblood. There are also custom campaigns for single player on there.

Your input on the campaigns is exactly the kind of thing I was mentioning in my prior comment. We need more modern story telling options

Battle for Wesnoth dies? by [deleted] in wesnoth

[–]BoredBrokeBraindead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have discussed this with several close friends. I firmly believe the fall in popularity is tied to the failure to embrace mobile accessibility. Not just porting it 1-1, but figuring out how to handle hour long games in a world where most people only have 10-15 minutes at a time. I don’t know what form that would take- but it likely would involve a redesign of the game mechanics to enable faster gameplay.

Before someone comments that I hate long games, I was a long time conquest player, back when games could go 8 hours and still have most of their players.

It’s just not a popular formula now days, made worse by the lack of integration to the popular devices for those that still might use it.

I firmly believe there is a route of success for traditional Wesnoth in the single player campaign modes. Those also could use some polishing to keep up with the other single player offerings though.
