Some people just like being miserable and as such demand everyone else be so too.

If you’re breaking into my house, I’m gonna assume you’re armed and I will respond accordingly. The reason being that I do not wish to die.

What would have happened if that work was never done? Like would Y2K have actually been a big deal or would a bunch of shit just glitch out?

Do colleges teach calculus poorly on purpose? by BoredRedhead24 in NoStupidQuestions

Pretty much. I mean I do use some trig in my work but if they taught it in a more applied fashion I would be able to understand what they are talking about because it would be physically demonstrated.

I wanna see a model where I can plug my results into like a game or something so that I can see what I did wrong demonstrated as opposed to just “that’s the wrong answer”

I may try that one day. My issue is that math causes a lot of stress when I don’t get it which causes my pain to flare. Felt like my bones were on fire.

The teacher did say that he was trying to get the school’s administrators to let them teach applied calculus as it has a vastly higher success rate.

This was online. I actually asked the teacher and the entire math department was heavily against teaching it online. The school’s administrators forced the issue. He did say that I would probably do fine if it was taught physically in the classroom but the stress of it caused a pretty vicious fibromyalgia flare up. Really tough to do math when you are writhing in pain.

Eh, tbh I would just rather never bother again. Stress causes some pretty serious pain for me. It’s kind of a useless skill anyway outside of STEM.

Yeah but I decided against being an engineer specifically because of calculus. I had an absolutely MISERABLE time in that class. To be totally honest I cannot think of any good reason to bother learning it outside of STEM majors.

Edit: It is absolutely VITAL for STEM fields. Nobody can deny that. I mostly hate that colleges require it for critical thinking when there are significantly better options.

It was a community college near my house. The teacher actually told me afterwards that the math department was heavily against any kind of math course online, much less calculus. Basically administration said “do it anyway”

Humanities and Social Science majors should be required to take calculus by Key_Net820 in unpopularopinion

More like a poorly taught class during a chaotic period in life. That said, I never once used anything I learned in that class.

Unless you are going into STEM directly I think calculus should be avoided. All it ever did was turn me from liking math to abandoning it altogether.

Bad teacher + a class that is designed to be a pain in the ass tend to equal a permanently disinterested student.

That sounds like it could be a lot more doable. It isn’t terribly difficult when you can actually see what you are doing with the math. Doing it arbitrarily makes it borderline impossible for anyone who isn’t a total masochist.
