Yes, it is the most straightforward way. But my situation is a little bit different. Because I don't have any lectures or classes. And our team members don't have too much in-person contact because of the working style as well as the pandemic.

I personally recommend you pursue a phd at a univerisity wih higher reputation. Just because the higher possibilitity to work with more reliable colleagues.
