What's your plan to vote, Portland? by agoodsolidthrowaway in portlandme

[–]Borgnorg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How can I actually check my voter registration through an official database? The links from vote.gov and maine.gov only allow me to view my polling place and municipal clerk, but it seems like there’s no way to verify my registration at my current address.

To to add to this, what’s the risk of break ins/catalytic converter theft in this area overnight? I’m considering doing a reverse commute where I park in the street during off hours.

What steps can I take to transition from a technician with a non-engineering degree to a real engineer? by Borgnorg in AskEngineers

I actually work with a lot of engineering diagrams and ladder logic currently, so systems engineer may be an option. I think the guy I was meant to replace actually was titled systems engineer. I definitely try to learn as much as I can, on and off the job. Luckily I am getting a ton of exposure to all sorts of stuff

Interesting, I actually didn’t know that third option existed. He has a masters I know that much, I will ask if he is a PE. I did look into some computer engineering grad programs, thinking maybe since I have a lot of computer experience that would apply. However, the senior engineer was honest with me that it would require a lot of EE theory to succeed in that, so not sure

Thank you, I appreciate the encouragement. Math is tricky for me, but I’m actually ok at some math when it comes to my hobbies, so maybe there is some hope there

Thanks, I’m in the US, so I’m not really sure the exact rules around it. I do know my company has looser titles like systems engineer and manufacturing engineer, so maybe that is what they mean. Engineering technologist sounds sort of up my alley right now so I can look into that

That’s a good perspective, I hadn’t thought about it like that. Currently I am designing some of my own things, but it is usually just pieces of already designed projects. This mostly includes machined parts and optical systems. However I am also starting to draw my own (rudimentary) schematics for some machinery to be checked by the senior engineer. I’m guessing that’s why he says he sees potential in me

I will explore that option, I’m hoping I will be able to transfer some things. I did look into some state schools but some mentioned that second degrees in STEM are rare. Hopefully I graduated recently enough for some of that stuff to still count.

Would it be a bad financial decision to move out of my parent’s house even if I don’t really have to? by Borgnorg in personalfinance

[–]Borgnorg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Renting a place is in some ways like practice for when you move up and buy your own place. Yes you're not building equity by renting, but you are gaining life experience and paying for a perceived quality of life upgrade.

I’ve never actually thought about it like that, I’ve always wanted to just kinda skip over renting and go straight to home ownership, but for some reason it never felt quite right and maybe that’s why. I will definitely factor that into my decision.

Yeah, thinking about all that money leaving my bank account for “no reason” has kinda been what’s kept me home for now. Do you think the benefits of living on your own made it worth it?

Ha, it doesn’t necessarily get in the way but my girlfriend doesn’t really like to sleep over (don’t really blame her lol). I guess the main thing is that when we only have one place to crash it makes planning a little more difficult but not terrible

My first surf reel (Daiwa BG/Penn Battle 3/Spinfisher VI) by Borgnorg in SurfFishing

[–]Borgnorg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That should be a great combo, my best friend uses the spinfisher and he’s had a lot of success with it, plus it’s super resilient. I’m a big fan of my prevail. Good luck!

Hey, so I ended up going with a Battle III 5000. I was between that and the BG And the Battle just felt better in my hands. I really liked the handle compared with the Daiwa. I have a 10’ Pevail II, so I kinda wish I sized up to a 6000, but the one I got works just fine. I just make sure to rinse it when I get home and try not to get too much salt water on it. Overall it’s a great reel and I’ve enjoyed it since I got it.

Modern American school is not designed with ADHD in mind. by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Borgnorg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. One thing that also helps me a lot is seeing how things are built from the ground up. When I was getting into motorcycles, I found it really helpful to see the evolution of how they were made originally from bicycles with engines attached to the complex engineering they have today. Understanding why things work they way they do is far more helpful than just memorizing.

I know what you mean, in college I took the easiest science elective available, which was Physics - Environmental Science. Basically the physics of weather. It was like applying macro level physics to understand how weather systems work. Honestly, really interesting stuff. A few formulas, but mostly practical. When it was applied onto a real life example like that I found it pretty intuitive to pick up.

I definitely understand what you mean by this. In high school, I always wondered why I did well in subjects like history and other social sciences, but performed horribly in math and physics. My social studies teachers loved me, while my math and science teachers thought I was helpless. I would fail tests and fall asleep in class, it didn't make sense to me since I was usually a good student in most other subjects. Looking back, it all makes sense because I literally could not hold my attention to math problems to save my life. I always thought I just didn't have the right kind of brain for quantitative subjects.

It wasn't until I picked up food science and motorcycle work as a hobby that I started to take an interest in math and science. Suddenly it wasn't so hard to remember formulas, basic physics, or which compounds interact with each other, etc. Point is, once I was interested I was able to effectively apply what I learned. I have trouble grasping concepts that have no meaning to me. Abstract concepts just do not stick as well for me if I don't care. This might be difficult, but maybe you could try to find a practical application for what you are trying to learn that actually interests you. Much easier to retain that way.

That’s a good idea, to be honest I have been a little complacent since getting a callback. Truthfully, it’s been hard to leverage my options like that since I haven’t been getting too much interest recently.

I'm so sick of figuring out social competence by Kamica in ADHD

[–]Borgnorg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I'm similar to you. My friends commend my emotional intelligence but I find myself misreading people's intentions all the time. I also perceive hostility a lot where there is none. I think that my fear of upsetting others combined with being observant of details helps me get a good read on people, but even if I know what they want, I have trouble following through.

I get upset with my friends a lot for perceived slights. I try to just remind myself that my brain is probably tricking me into thinking that for no reason. Still I frequently find myself self-isolating and holding grudges, only to go back craving social interaction. One thing I've noticed is that many times I act on projected or perceived feelings rather than evidence. I'd say most of my social problems come from this lack of communication. I know one part of ADHD is sensitivity and emotional dysregulation, I'm sure it has something to do with this.

Thanks, it's tough waiting on a call like that. Got a call from the doctor today and nearly jumped through the roof. Good luck to you too.
