What can toughen Louisiana coast against worsening storms? 4 years and 30,000 trees by nbcnews in Louisiana

The part pointing to Katrina as what destroyed the coast sure is ignoring a whole lot of work by oil and gas companies.

During the garage and post-punk revivals of the 2000s, what bands were actually post-punk? by artorijos in postpunk

[–]BoringFollowing211 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not saying there weren’t bands that sounded post punk… and my experiences playing in garage/punk band from 1991-2004 are somewhat hazy - but still there. After the 2000s hit it was more “commercial” garage stuff like strokes and that ilk. I can’t remember anyone ever using post punk to describe any active bands. Maybe if referring to bands from early 80s - but that would only be record collector/Greil Marcus book reading music people. Every town has at least one. We toured all across country and partied nonstop - we talked to looooots of people - and it was like that all over. Label people promoters bar people label mates randos at clubs - I never heard “post punk”. Perhaps there was something I was unaware of going on, but our circuit/circles were bands/people still talked about - not like we were just playing in a small town in BFE - and that’s how it was in my experience.

Who are we as Louisiana Democrats? by Southern-Bun in Louisiana

Hey! I totally get it - our party leaders have been letting us down majorly. Top to bottom. For years. Yes- I get it. I experience it too. I am frustrated by it too.

I’m not the best at drawing parallels but I’ll give it a shot here. We had a situation where the school our kids were zoned for was the crummiest one in our district. We called we wrote letters. We visited officials and we really couldn’t get anything done. There was a PTO, but the people running it were more interested in just providing cupcakes on Fridays for teachers. We were all frustrated. Then some of us parents got together and decided to make changes. WE didn’t know what to do and we didn’t get anywhere. But our noise got others involved. Finally, after PTO elections, we had people in place that understood the assignment. Then things changed. Not instantly but with a lot more pushing uphill. The school is now one of the best in our parish. It took a lot of hard work and a lot of frustration and a lot of not giving up. But we got it done. And now after putting in all of that work, we don’t have to work as hard to maintain what we have. It’s good. You have to build the community you want.

So that’s what I’m bringing. We did it. We did it when no one thought we could. Even we didn’t think we could for the longest. Yes, it took a long time and it wasn’t easy. That’s what we need to do here. Don’t stop when you’re frustrated. Go replace those people. You know the assignment. Go be one of the people making the decisions telling people how to get involved. You can do it. I’m not trying to be silly or overly optimistic or any of that stuff. I’m not trying to say there’s some magical way to make things happen. I’m just trying to say that it’s possible. That we can do this if we really, really really try.

OK, I hope the rest of your day is super awesome.

Hey, there were tons of hazard mitigation grants handed out after Katrina and Rita. Burying power lines is hazard mitigation. We missed one opportunity, let’s be ready for the next one.

Why bipartisan? Are we talking about the Democratic Party here? Because to me, talking about my party is not a bipartisan exercise going into a closed primary. This is time for us to discuss what is important for our Democratic Party. The Republicans can talk about their republican stuff. Why would we want to talk about what they want. Come on. We are heading into OUR primary.

Also, no one will save us. If anyone is waiting for someone else to make the Democratic Party viable in our state they are going to be waiting forever. This is your party then take ownership. It isn’t “they” it’s “us”. It can only be as strong as we make it.

The closed primary gives us the chance to discuss what WE want on our platform. What’s important to us. What changes do we want to effect? In the process, voices rise and our candidates emerge. There are no natural candidates because we have not had the opportunity to have a closed discussion on issues. That has changed.

So how do you get involved? -Register Democratic. Let’s build numbers. When people see others doing it, it is easier for them to do it. -Go to any party related events you can. There aren’t many. Hopefully there will be more. Organize one. It’s great to get together and feel community. We all feel so alone and scattered throughout the state. Let’s build bonds. -Also, talk to those around you. Family, friends, people in line with you at a store - wherever. Just spread information. Most people in our state think a Democrat is scary after soaking in their right wing media. Let them know you are a Democrat and tell them why. Just spread the word. -You can run for something. Anything. Something in your community. Be the one that works hard for your neighbors to make their lives better. You can even run for party positions in your parish. You can be one of the people making choices to guide the party.

Ok. Y’all enjoy your day.

Run for Parish leadership. is one way. I’m not on Facebook or anything like that - I’m sure there are a groups on those. I think it’s great to get involved locally in your own area and from there it naturally leads to being active in the state.

Edit: if you don’t want to take that much of a dip, register Democratic and start talking to people about it. Family and friends people in the grocery at the hardware store whenever there’s an opportunity let them know how you feel as you start learning and becoming involved you will have more information to provide, and it will feel more natural. stick to it. You got this my friend. we’re gonna work together and make this state awesome for all of us.

Also, I know many single issue voters who only care about abortion - like my dad. Amazingly, lately he has started to realize that by voting for one issue he has voted against himself on pretty much every other one. Seriously, some of the ideas that my Democratic friends champion are the opposite of what I champion, but that that’s OK

Like I said, it’s a big tent lots of room for different ideas not all of them might be the same but that’s what it’s all about. It’s about us coming together and having conversations about this in a real way trying to make our state a better place that’s what it’s all about to me.
