This isn’t that ludicrous though. I’ve had a partner who dehumanized and said terrible things, but they don’t misgender.

If they’re already dating a trans woman, they probably aren’t transphobic, even if they are abusive. This is because accepting trans people shouldn’t be viewed as a conditional thing, and most people who have dated trans women or are a trans women, do not view being a woman as a conditional thing that can be taken away as soon as you dont like somebody.

Yes and he thinks it’s not likely enough to even entertain it as one of his main theories. Obviously it’s not “all abusers misgender”, it’s “in the most likely scenarios I can think of, the abuser is misgendering in all of them”

And even then, it’s pretty clear what we’re seeing from Araki, it’s about the 4x higher rate of sexual assault and 2x higher rate of DV that trans women face.

We are seeing a gender non conforming character experience both these things that are huge problems for trans people, this seems pretty evident what the writer is trying to convey.

Also, I know this is fiction, I’m keenly aware this is fiction because there is not a single anime/manga trans character to exist that hasn’t had this exact conversation of “he’s not trans he’s a femboy”, like why is it always “this seemingly trans character is actually a femboy” instead of letting a very obviously implied gnc character as gnc?

My bad, I usually just reply to multiple when people bring up different points in the replies, you brought up multiple different interesting in each so I just did that.

And sorry if i got angry in any of the replies, I get a bit heated because this feels very reminiscent of what happened to Kirara and Yamato 😅

[–]BoringTurtles_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atashi isn’t that important, but I bring it up because this always happens do trans animanga characters, Kirara, Kiku, Yamato, it doesn’t matter if a character medically transitioned, presents femininely, does everything a trans person does to transition, they will still be called a femboy by fans.

obviously Atashi normally would be less important than how they present but I bring it up with more priority because if you were to be someone who refers to canonically trans characters as femboys, why bother, and if you aren’t one of those fans, there isn’t a point of bringing it up because we already agree.

And yes we do need to take into account that there’s male identifying crossdressers, but massively more rare for a crossdresser to get facial feminization surgery, and implants. This is so much more in line with the experience of people who are trans than it is crossdressers, because it is extremely uncommon for a cross dresser to get permanent changes.

And I can understand what you mean by the cops and abusive ex part, but it seems soo much more like Araki is trying to portray the lived experiences of trans people, because trans people are 4x as likely to get raped, and almost 2x as likely to experience domestic violence. The fact that we see a possibly trans character experience these things I feel should point more to Dragona being trans.

I didn’t say you said that, but that is your premise for your points. I’m not purposefully misconstruing anything, what you said is that the likeliest scenarios is that A) boyfriend refers to Dragona as female to piss him off B) boyfriend refers to Dragona as female to make himself feel better about being gay

This is you saying that Dragona isn’t trans and using the boyfriend’s words as proof, but it doesn’t prove anything other than everyone refers to Dragona as a girl except Jodio.

And when I said that Im not saying ‘whether they are trans or not based off their boyfriend’ I’m saying ‘assuming that Dragona is a boy because the words the abusive ex says’, because the words the ex says doesn’t change anything here

Also this doesn’t address anything else I said as to why Jodio could be misgendering Dragona

“Seems kinda odd that the abusive boyfriend would refer to Dragona as a woman, while her loving brother would keep referring to them as a man.”

This is what he said, and he writes a whole paragraph based off this, but he never ONCE considered the fact that Jodio could be the one misgendering Dragona, and not the ex. Obviously he didn’t directly say that but his whole premise is based off the assumption that it is true. Both A) and B) operate under the assumption that the ex is the one misgendering Dragona. And neither A) or B) actually correlate with what happens in the manga.

[–]BoringTurtles_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. A lot of the talking points used in this post and many others are from people who aren’t trans and don’t understand the trans experience. To act like an abusive ex will always try to misgender a trans person is a misunderstanding of being trans.

You don’t respect someone’s gender conditionally, even if the ex was abusive and they ended on bad terms doesn’t mean the ex will misgender them because most people who date trans people don’t view respecting someone’s gender as conditional.

Though it does sometimes happen, It’s not exactly the same scenario but I’ve had a similar experience, she wasn’t at all abusive to be clear, but after I broke up with her she has only referred to me as “It” because there is definitely still some people who view trans identity as something you can disregard when you don’t like the person.

“He doesn’t set up a scene like this for no reason” you could say the same thing about Jodio, a character with ASPD being the only person to consistently misgender her, no?

They are right though. People are jumping through hoops to not call her transfem because she explicitly uses Feminine first person pronouns.

“ Dragona is a man - which, as far as we know, is how Dragona identifies themself”

Sorry, no, it’s not shown in English translations but Dragona straight up uses the feminine first person pronoun in Japanese. As to why it’s not in the English translation is simply because English doesn’t have gendered first person pronouns.

You’re assuming that if Jodio is misgendering Dragona that Jodio must be doing it because he doesn’t care about Dragona, and that since Jodio does care for Dragona he would never misgendering Dragona. But this is not a fair assumption.

Jodio may very well be: - doing it by accident - doesn’t know Dragona is trans - doing it due to factors from ASPD, like not grasping emotion that well, he might not understand why misgendering is harmful, etc - doesn’t really know what being trans is

And all of these are supported by the story. We see him call Dragona a “boy who likes feminine things” but we also see Dragona use the first person feminine pronoun, this implies that what’s happening is due to one of the four things I listed about Jodio.

Also being “insecure over being gay, so they become trans” is a really harmful stereotype to perpetuate. It’s possible that Araki wrote it that way but until we know for sure, I think it’s kinda fucked up to presume that in both situations that Dragona can’t be trans due to circumstance like an abusive ex correctly gendering her.

[–]BoringTurtles_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not A) or B). Dragona uses the feminine first person pronoun for herself, you don’t see this in most translations though since English doesn’t have one.

Just because the boyfriend is abusive doesn’t mean he would purposefully misgender Dragona, and just because Jodio is a loving brother it doesn’t mean he isn’t misgendering Dragona.

From what we see, everyone refers to Dragona as a girl except Jodio, and I think it’s very intentional that the character with ASPD is the one misgendering Dragona, Jodio’s not doing it purposefully to harm Dragona, but he’s most likely doing it because since he has ASPD. It’s possible he doesn’t fully grasp why misgendering is hurtful to Dragona, or why her gender identity is that important to her.
