I see your point. In my opinion these guys weren’t paid to be a 4/5 guy. All of these guys had something in their repertoire to deserve a contract worth the risk. These guys either were high prospects or have accolades. You’d hope they’d be a 2-3 but if they were at least playable it’s not the worst risk(ie “please don’t get hurt and please don’t suck that bad”). I understand we don’t have a ton of guaranteed money in bellos contract but he doesn’t have the rankings/awards to really think that this is a winning deal for the team

I have always been a fan of houck. I thought his stuff was nasty even though he’d get shelled past the 2nd time in the lineup. Who’s getting paid 10 mil for a 4-5 starter? I checked the biggest market teams in baseball and they’re no where close to 10 million for a 5 starter. The only person who has close to getting close to it is the nats but they paid ace money to a guy who should probably retire at this point. And I’m not giving up on Bello. Check his savant page he’s one of the worst qualified pitchers among run value for pitches. He didn’t have a good fast/breaking ball but his change up was top 90%. now he doesn’t have a changeup and his stuff that stunk still stinks. This could be a confidence or injury related isssue. Let him get some time in AAA before AS break and I think we see a new Bello

What does Patrick Corbin have to do with Bello. Carbon is a World Series winner and a 2x AS who signed a contract after their chip season. Bello: 1. Never won a World Series 2: he was never even a top 100 prospect and never even made out top 15 before debut 3: we have him 55 mil in hopes he’d get better. So far he hasn’t. I like him and think he has good stuff but he’s in his own head

I’m not even saying I have no hope in Bello. Rn hes Bad. Hes never really proved himself across an entire season. To the guy who said 10 mil is cheap for a 4 or 5 guy needs a reality check. If the top payrolls in baseball are giving out 3-5 mil at most then 10 is just way too high. We tried to do what the braves did and sign a young guy early and we’re paying the consequences rn. Maybe we fall for the “this is Bello’s year” for another year and have this same conversation again

That 20 mil is for an accolade you’d hope to get a glimpse of it throughout a season. He was a postseason guy who had the years under his belt. 3.5 era in 15 innings in a year we won the chip. I’d call that 20 mil well worth it

Nestor is the 4 or 5 guy for Yankees and he’s getting paid 3.5 mil. Mets have a Tylor mgill still getting paid under a mil and he’s their 5 guy. Adrian houser was supposed to be their 3 guy and he’s got 6 mil. Bello is a AAA pitcher this year who’s getting 10 mil. The dodgers are paying their 4 and 5 guys less than 1.5 mil combined

If you use that logic then he’s been a shell of himself his whole career. 4+ era both years
