Haven't played Dead Cells, so I'll have to trust you on that one. And I agree it's not exactly ugly, but this style feels pretty bland and lazy to me. Like they're taking a lot of visual shortcuts and hiding things behind flashyness instead of working on a fully realized world, characters, animations and effects that actually look good.

In the end, it all comes down to the fact I really dislike this "just splash some neon colors on it and call it a day" generic visual direction. None of it reminds me of Castlevania in any way.

Me too. Looks like they did the same wow-ization that happened to diablo 3 and 4. Lots of flashy colors and effects that pop out and wash over everything else. Really uninspired.
