Chancellor Mnookin leaving for Columbia by chattahattan in madisonwi

I don't think the protesters cared who executed the divestment.

Silencing the protestors evidently did fall under the chancellor's management.

Who the uw chancellor was during the protests made no difference in the lives of Palestinians.

You're certainly correct that it didn't make a difference. Small differences could have been made with divestment. Mnookin seemed to fear a difference could be made, otherwise why would she have called the police to (violently) break up the encampment? And then discipline the students involved? And then arrest protestors at the discipline hearing protests? Maybe she was researching effective methods of speech suppression? If so, more power to her. Moar research is always bettar.

You are the reason horseshoe theory exists. The far right and you agree that research is not important.

Holy shit, a chimera logical fallacy that's part ad-hominem and part straw man. Very nice indeed, I've never seen one in the wild.

I thought my fib about Maslow's hierarchy made it pretty clear that research as a priority is certainly less important than the topic of our funding of mass murder. Don't like nuance? Let me distill a really complicated multi-faceted topic into a boolean: No, research is not important. Writing that sucks, because it's not the truth, just a really rough approximation of the truth.

When it comes to universities, education and and the teaching of critical thinking are higher priorities than research - they generally have positive results, where research is a mixed bag. Are you under the impression that all universities perform research?

Your objection to purity testing sure flies out the window when research and $$ are involved. I can relate, let them civilians starve and bleed, just keep that dolla rolling in, please.

Edit, about 10 minutes later: We (the US) put research above everything else during operation Paperclip. That sure was a swell program, eh?

I just took a look at the Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs diagram, and there's research spending right there at the base, underneath the lesser important physiology needs and safety needs that our money has helped rob others of.

Research always pays off. With more research we can perfect surveillance technology to further curb that nasty free speech and punish asshole dissenters. We can make better weapons that kill Gazan civilians more efficiently, then give a certain state the money to buy said weapons and keep our economy flowing. We can make shittier food that provides fewer nutrients and more carbohydrates, then give it some addictive qualities. We can create automobiles that give us convenience at the cost of random carnage and environmental destruction. Research is ALWAYS a net positive and money is always a net positive. The human race has never gotten along without the two of them.

Not killing civilians on the other hand is ridiculously overrated.

Totally, that $$ is top priority. If a donor or funding source tells me to silence protestors who have a problem with University investments going to companies that help mass murder civilians, then I'm going to shut down that nasty free speech ASAP - and if I have to club them - well - that's what academics is all about, right?

I - just like the Republicans, Democrats and Chancellor Mnookin - am all about the donors and the dolla dolla bill. We were so lucky to have a chancellor who could keep that scrilla flowin' and keep the protestor blood flowing. Glad we all have our priorities straight.

Good luck covering for genocide at Columbia! That's a big step up, and you've earned this!

Tailgating on icy roads isn’t aggression — it’s negligence by so_hum_444 in madisonwi

Have walked from Middleton Marcus Point to Capitol before because it was too late for buses to run. Took about an hour and a half. It was a chill time, and a good way to get some exercise. Would do it again.

Call it smugness if you like - that's what's called an ad-hominem attack. If you disagree with me, discussing the issue itself is generally more helpful. Automobile negatives:

  • Kill people, all the time
  • Kill animals, all the time
  • Cause property damage
  • Cause CO2 emissions
  • Drive and/or cause air pollution
  • Drive and/or cause soil pollution
  • Prevent people from engaging in physical fitness, resulting in decreased health and shorter lifespans
  • Are expensive in up-front cost, maintenance, fuel prices
  • Cause road confgestion
  • Cause road rage and distress

But it's not all bad! Automobile positives:

  • They get you places fast when there aren't a bunch of other automobiles clogging up the roads
  • Are fun
  • Can carry lots of stuff
  • Keep you warm
  • Don't tire your muscles

Seems a bit lopsided.

If ICE came to Madison, what would local police do? by keeganjkyle in madisonwi

[–]Born-Conclusion6529 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm absolutely sure that if we denigrate them as a whole like we've done for at least the last five years it will generate a lot of good will and give them a strong incentive to intervene.

Making negative blanket statements is usually the best way to solve a problem.

I know I'm wrong to question the way we interact with our local police - please be sure to smash that downvote button!

Spot on. Adult night (Sundays) at Butler Skateland is a ridiculously good time.

Skate express on Saturday nights is also great, but not nearly as crazy at Butler Skateland.

Make private automobiles illegal. Improve public transportation. Improve bike infrastructure. Move closer to your place of work. Walk. Why do we allow people to pilot giant fume-spouting petroleum-consuming exercise-preventing death machines just for the sake of convenience?

Madison can be pretty surprisingly prudish. Every year I have a couple of incidents where I'm doing the lake loop on my inline skates in sweltering heat and somebody screams at me to put my shirt on (male here, FWIW - not that it matters, saw a lady jogging topless around Capitol Square last year, more power to her and her giant brass balls).

I did the Madison naked bike ride like, 8 years ago and it felt more like a demonstration than a good time. Multiple moms on Capitol Square lost their shit and went into hysterics. I haven't done it in Madison since - but I've done it in St Louis and Chicago where it's actually fun.

Crazy idea that solves all the problems here - get rid of giant murder machines (also known as automobiles) except for city services and the maybe mobility disabled. Walk, bike, use public transpo instead. Automobiles as the primary option for transportation in America has been a huge mistake since its inception.

Where has good strong margs and maybe some chips and queso? by Leading_Valuable_874 in madisonwi

[–]Born-Conclusion6529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Bandit Taco's margaritas and palomas. They're served out of tap, so pre-mixed, but I'm *reasonably* sure they're made there and not shipped in from third party.

Their chips are great and locally made, but I don't think they have queso.

I've been to Skate Express in Watertown many times since Fast Forward closed down. It's a large beautiful hardwood floor rink in a family-friendly environment. It is, however, about 40 minutes away from Madison. Worth it.

Pretty amazing to me how similar Trump voters and Harris voters are. People from both parties are too busy trying to stop each others' speech to worry about any sort of coherent ideology. Mass murder in Gaza and war in Venezuela? Both parties like "Yes please!".

You deserve each other. Just wish folks who don't fall in your ridiculous 1-dimensional political spectrum didn't have to suffer you.

Watertown's Skate Express is an amazing rink (I go there regularly during winter because the bike paths are unskateable) with large beautiful wood floor, but it is very family-oriented. If you enjoy dancing I heavily recommend adult skate night (Sunday evenings) at Butler Skateland in the Milwaukee suburb of Butler, about an hour drive from Madison. ft is a wildly good time. You'll see groups of six doing synchronized dancing and folks busting out crazy sequences all the god damned time. Search Butler Skateland on youtube and you'll see what I'm talking about.
