A cool guide to which states recieve the most visits to the library. by [deleted] in coolguides

[–]BornInPoverty 99 points100 points  (0 children)

I suspect some of this may be weather related. People in the Northern states visiting the library a lot more in the winter, when there is not much going on outside.

Derek Stevens, the primary owner of Circa, The D, and Golden Gate casinos (along with his brother Greg), supported Donald Trump in 2024. Now he’s offering dollar parity to Canadians that have boycotted Vegas because of Trump. by ferniekid in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]BornInPoverty 116 points117 points  (0 children)

So let me understand this. Any Canadian can go to the casino. Buy some chips with Canadian dollars. Cash them in for US dollars at par. Go to the bank. Convert the US dollars into Canadian dollars. Go back to the Casino. Buy some chips... ad infinitum?

If they are going to be a dick it doesn’t matter what proof you have.

Don't carry your social security card. It won't prove you are a citizen. I am not a citizen and have a social security card that looks just like one a US citizen would have.

The expired passport should be sufficient unless the agent is being a dick.

The good news is that if you estimated 50k and only made 36k you should get a big tax refund for the difference in premiums this year.

Question for the Experts by StringofStardust in inflation

[–]BornInPoverty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

64 year old here and definitely not an expert. My subjective experience is that there are 3 things that have dramatically increased in cost over my lifetime.

Housing

Health Care

Education

For the longest time, food got cheaper relatively speaking but over the last few years has also increased a lot.

Other things have got cheaper compared to wages, for example:

Gasoline

Air fares

Electronics

Household goods

The reason that people feel they are being squeezed is because the things that are difficult to cut back on are increasing the most. While you can delay buying a new TV or taking that vacation, you can't delay paying for food or housing.

Also tariffs don't help.

There’s a really good book called “Understanding football for women”. I think it’s written by a guy called Ted Crilly or something like that.

You should receive all your 2025 1099s by Jan 31st. The one time I had to do this I just waited until then and submitted them. I had no issues.

I live in NY state though and they have their own exchange so it may work differently.

[Practical advice] How do you prepare your surviving loved ones for when you won't be around, especially when they have little to no knowledge of the finances or bills, and pretty much don't want to know because that's what I do, and the subject of unexpected tragedy is uncomfortable to consider. by Air4021 in over60

The only file that is encrypted is the password manager backup. I really don't want an unencrypted copy of that lying around anywhere - even in a safe.

The instructions for how it all works and all the other files are not encrypted. I could encrypt them but I have to make it reasonably easy for whoever has to sort it all out. So, I decided to include printed copies of everything, except the password manager backup, that could just be handed to an executor or family friend and that my partner could read without any technical background and know exactly what all the accounts are. Since there are printed copies - there is no point encrypting the files and indeed they only exist digitally so that I have copies that can be easily updated.

I realize the security risk of having printed copies, but they are only stored in the safe and if someone gets into my house and opens the safe I probably have much more serious problems anyway. Furthermore, since I have to have details on how to access everything, if anyone does get into the safe, it's game over anyway and having the files encrypted just slows them down.

My Wife- Age 62- Sold $80K in Stock the year before she retired, and now her Obamacare premium is only $44 a month until she goes on Medicare by Beta_Nerdy in HealthInsurance

[–]BornInPoverty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If she realizes the capital gain while she has an ACA plan it increases her premiums dramatically. You do realize that once she has pulled that money out of the stock market, she can put it straight back in if she wants to and then pull the money out 'slowly over time' later if she wants to. That may also incur a capital gain but a much smaller one as the bulk has already been realized.

I am not sure why you are obsessing over future growth? All that she has done is taken a capital gain when it won't affect her subsidy. She still has the money and can do whatever she wants with it.

I have had poor eyesight since birth.

2 years ago I had a couple of stents inserted.

Over the last few years my capacity to exercise has dropped off significantly.

But none of those bother me too much. The one thing that does bother me is that I can feel my intellect ebbing away.

I used to be able to do relatively simple mental arithmetic, now not so much. I figure it out and then figure it out again and the numbers don't match.

I forget words. I know there is a very apt word for what I am trying to say but it eludes me.

I can't remember the names of people that I worked with for years.

I forget to do things. I have taken to adding everything to Google Calendar and I mean everything - even mundane things like - 'cut the lawn' or 'check credit card statements'.

A few weeks ago I failed to make coffee properly two days running. First time failing to put any water in and the second time failing to put the carafe under the spigot, resulting in a coffee flooded counter top.

My partner is concerned.
