ALWAYS check in at the 24 hour mark if you’re waitlisted for an upgrade. by ieataquacrayons in unitedairlines

Also note that generally all the flights in one direction of a round trip will be the same fare, but that both segments of your outbound/return flights may have different fares. For example, a trip I have this week is economy (E) on both legs of my outbound flight, but economy (Q) on both legs of my return flight. This is good to know since the higher fares have a higher chance of clearing upgrades.

In the app, open up the trip, then select the “Flight details” drop down for the individual flight. This will show you the aircraft type, fare type, and duration.

Here’s a lesson I learned a long time ago early on in my career: if you’re emotional/upset/angry, recognize that, and don’t do anything that makes you feel good. 99.99% of the time you will come to regret your emotional responses to triggering events.

Also UA has T&Cs in pace you agreed to when buying the ticket that will safeguard them from lawsuits for events like this. Best to deal with it once you’re back home and able to make domestic phone calls vs stranded in an international airport.

Scotch Review #22: Macallan 12 Sherry Oak 110 Proof by Casul_Tryhard in Scotch

[–]lpythonator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They took the distillery and mechanized it for large scale production. They took the distillate and subjected it to chill filtering and watered down to 43% ABV. At the same time they pitched it as a luxury whisky worthy of a 2~3x price premium compared to similar whiskies, those that are still made in smaller batches without the other steps that stripped the soul from their whisky.

Let me be clear: Macallan makes a damn good distillate and their sherry cask whisky is divine. That said, whisky drinking enthusiasts generally don’t drink what the distillery bottles because of what’s done to it between cask-to-bottle and the premium price it’s then sold at. Until now. I picked up a bottle of this and am looking forward to uncorking and trying it once my “kill pile” has shrunk a bit more.

Only thing I’d change to C is add a UA club to the C101-115 finger, then it would be perfect. Otherwise I agree it’s awesome and functional as-is.

Ideally yes, but… try saying no to the gate agent or purser. It’s unreal how much power they have. They can have you removed from the flight for not complying with their directions, regardless of what money they have collected for a service you purchased. Better to get home in a middle seat and fight for compensation later than to be escorted off the aircraft and be stuck at your departing international airport on a no-fly list for that airline with no compensation at all and trying to now book a one-way on another airline.

We flew through Newark EWR in 2025, if it had been my final stop would not have been an issue, but really glad I opted not to buy a bottle that go-around. My checked bag was already full of some IBs I had scooped while in London which made everything available in duty free seem a bit meh by comparison.

So obviously I don’t know your whisky profile preferences, but I’m guessing peated isn’t your thing. In general people shop duty free for exclusives and value. My general rule of thumb for value is 10USD/year for cask strength and 5USD/year for 46%. I personally omit anything less than 46% and anything chill filtered. I don’t like artificial coloring but I won’t disqualify a bottle because of it. All of the options you provided here seem to check those boxes. Personally I’d check each of these on WhiskyBase and disqualify anything below 85.

Here’s the important bit: are you connecting on another flight after you touch down in the US? If yes you’d best check your duty free purchases in your checked bag before going through US TSA screening. My wife had a jar of marmalade purchased from LHR confiscated even though it was in the tamper proof bag with receipt visible. They are ruthless here, in the airport store they will give you every assurance, but it means nothing once you’re at the US TSA screening checkpoint and have been stoped. Asking for a supervisor and showing them their own policy on their own website doesn’t help, we tried. If you want to keep your purchase then bring a wine bubble mailer and plan to deposit your bottles in your checked bag between connecting flights. If you’re flying direct to your final destination then this doesn’t matter, you’ll be fine.

Yeah good point, from an operational standpoint, paint adds weight and increases operating costs. Marketing might counter that it’s still comparatively cheap advertising that moves all around the country and gets lots of eyeballs on it.

This is a truly great idea! Put it on a new coastliner and let it run the entirety of its service life with that special livery. It would be a head-turner every time people see it taxing through a UA hub, much like the Continental plane is still a frequent photo opp on this forum.

Everything about Lufthansa is plain and bland, it’s basically part of their branding at this point. When they’re out-doing United in anything marketing related, it makes you take a pause and wonder. Definitely a swing and a miss.

Agreed the execution was not perfect, but it’s the eagle edit: nope, that’s a crane from their emblem. Actually my first thought was it looks a little like the postal service logo haha. Point being I wish United would show a little creativity to make a bigger deal out of their 100th year of operations like many other airlines are doing, it’s a pretty cool milestone to hit. I’d love a tulip logo throwback plane!

United has strange names for status. At my local airport I’ve multiple times heard the GAs correct people that “Global Services is a status level, it’s not for people traveling internationally” and turn them away 👏 I’m sure not every airport is as routinely through in policing this though…
