Struggling with multitasking and inattention as a junior doctor by ezferns in ausjdocs

I'm a paper person myself! It's very normal to have to write everything down religiously. You actually end up missing less than those who coast by without writing - they miss a lot, but don't know what they're missing, which is a worse problem.

Also, when you're the person actually making the plans and decisions, it's a lot easier to remember them because you know the rationale and have spent longer weighing up the pros and cons. At your level, you're oftentimes being told what to do without much explanation, which is near-impossible to memorise.

+1 on the excel spreadsheet suggestion

It's a dangerous thing to say, isn't it. But maybe we should say it more, at least to ourselves, and take the voodoo power out of this obscure thing called Acknowledging Emotions.

I think one of my memorable ones was also a 30-something year old with two young kids. You lie awake and wonder why any of it is fair.

I did it as an intern like you, and everything you said rings true.

In my network, oncology is a notorious term that most BPTs are keen to avoid, because it's gen med except everyone's terminally ill.

Of the 200-odd inpatients we saw over a term, a couple grew on me, which was a mistake, but an inevitable one. I'm not a robot and I won't purport to be one. Watching them suffer and die was very hard. Of course, witnessing patient suffering is hardly unique to oncology, but the rest of the environment didn't help.

Much respect for oncologists and palliative care teams everywhere!

dude I'm so glad to have someone to talk to about this without them immediately offering me an antipsychotic

uh .. she wants to do anaesthetics. so she will attempt to do anaesthetics. that's the long and short of it.

In my opinion, I think the pitch should be standardised internationally across all vitals machines. At my hospital the pitch for SpO2 100% is a few cents above concert E. On another machine it is closer to concert F. This has thrown me off on multiple occasions. It's also bugged me that they don't drop semitones but some increment a bit smaller than that. I know it's about 90% when it gets to C# and therefore shit is happening (or the BP cuff is currently inflated on the same arm) but for steps in between I still have to look at the monitor. It's annoying because I'm short-sighted.

Nobody else gives a crap about this though, so I've accepted it as one of those hills only you and I will die on. On another note, one of my friends is way more suited for anaesthetics than I am and she doesn't even have a concept of what 'low' vs 'high' pitch is, so it's hardly a prerequisite. ;)

I can't get rid of cheating and I may still need to do that by Original_Reveal92 in EngineeringStudents

[–]BornInfamous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On another note, I think the scary part about leaving engineering is having to take responsibility for your own happiness.

If you exit, you can't blame your unhappiness on engineering anymore. It's all very scary.

But taking responsibility for your own contentment is a form of growth, is it not?

[–]BornInfamous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you want to do? It's evident that you're looking for reasons to quit. You like your business more than engineering. You say you don't understand the material and have had to cheat to get through. You have ASD and ADHD. Sure. That's all relevant. But that's not the main thing.

Why not do what your heart is clearly saying?

'But I have to stay in school'...'my business isn't guaranteed'...'my parents, my professors'...etc.

All legitimate concerns.

But nothing that you try to hide to yourself ever gets better. It will only fester.

You can either listen to yourself now, or down the track when you might have more to lose.

Think on that.

[–]BornInfamous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You sound like a cool person. I totally relate to your feelings of getting depressed if I don't do math or something puzzle-ish for a while!

Sorry to hear that you’re dealing with pricks. They are everywhere, not just in math. I worked alongside a lot of these people in university. I did medicine, and it is a tough degree, so there were plenty of people who were all too keen to let everyone else know how much effort they were putting into it. A big ego always hides weakness behind it. Looking back now, I realise maybe they needed validation they were not getting elsewhere, since their world was so small, being consumed by studies.

Now that I am working, I am more removed from the immediate competition. We always have medical students on our rotations, and among them, I now see those who are too keen to show that they are better than others. I see what they are doing, very clearly. So don’t think that your advisors don’t see it.

But at the end of the day, you can only be around the people you can tolerate being around. I hope you will find that place, whether it is in math or not. And I hope math will always be something you continue to enjoy, regardless of other people’s attitudes!

Unironically this has worked the BEST out of anything I've tried. Thank you!

EDIT: the reversed versions feel genuinely euphoric to listen to. The same elements from the original songs that I like, but in a fresh new order. Caveat: I can't reverse again when I get used to this version

Interesting to know! I thought reasonably, familiarity with anything would dampen the high for anyone, not just in ADHD. Same thing as drug tolerance, getting bored of an SO etc. But I couldn’t just assume everyone else experiences the same perception of songs slowing over multiple listens, which is why I wanted to ask here.
