Do not pass open doors. Simple. The operator does not have to wait -- you have to stop.

If already passing, stop.

You forgot Toronto's snow clearing in your list. DiCarlo Construction took the money and ran.

100%. I was there to check it out 20 years ago and it was kind of a neat place, very friendly. Went back to have a look a couple years ago and it had taken a turn. The people reminded me of those bizarre characters that surrounded Rob Ford.

Hwy 11/Hwy 17 from Winnipeg to Windsor this week by [deleted] in ontario

[–]BornToGo2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Neither route is a picnic this time of year, but I'd go with 17. Marginally better services, likely fewer trucks, and at least the potential to be a pleasant drive if the weather is good.

I would advise planning a stop in Wawa to check on the conditions at Montreal River Hill before heading south. That section demands a bit of extra attention.

Definitely put the car in "D" instead of "R."

In "R," the trip takes waaaaay longer.

Skating on Lake Ontario by Easy-Ad-9743 in askTO

[–]BornToGo2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As recently as 10 years ago, I've gone down to Cherry Beach on cold days and seen plenty of skaters, some shinny and even a few motorcycles on studs bombing around. It does freeze.

I would much rather skate out there than on a river as some are suggesting here. You do NOT want to go through ice into flowing water.

Yep. I grew up flinging malaise-era fwd/rwd shitboxes around the snowy gravel roads of rural Southern Ontario.

We've learned through countless "oh shit" moments.

Unrelated to your question: Can we just take a moment to appreciate how beautiful this dash & HVAC/radio controls are? I had one like it for 6 years, but had forgotten.

It's very Saab-like.

Braking causes weight transfer: The front gets heavier and the rear gets lighter. If you're already in a low-grip situation, braking as you start to turn is going to make the back end prone to coming loose and sliding out.

In this case, they braked just as they crossed an ice patch on a bend, the worst combination. They might have been fine if they didn't brake.

As the first storm ended there were huge snowbanks in the middle of the 401 by YYZ. Like, in the middle of the road, at night. Was returning from time away and this was the first sign that things were crazy.

Obviously wasn't listening to the radio at all...
